The problem with power
Eve and the Serpent Genesis 3:5 “5 “In fact, God knows that when you eat it your eyes will be opened and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.””
Israel asked for a human King 1 Samuel 8:7 “7 But the Lord told him, “Listen to the people and everything they say to you. They have not rejected you; they have rejected me as their king.”
The Tower of Babylon Genesis 11:4 “4 And they said, “Come, let’s build ourselves a city and a tower with its top in the sky. Let’s make a name for ourselves; otherwise, we will be scattered throughout the earth.””
Does this still happen?
I’m left, I’m right, I’m center
What is missing “I’m a follower of the Most High”
Jeroboam
King of ten tribes of Israel
1 Kings 11:38 CSB
38 “ ‘After that, if you obey all I command you, walk in my ways, and do what is right in my sight in order to keep my statutes and my commands as my servant David did, I will be with you. I will build you a lasting dynasty just as I built for David, and I will give you Israel.
The Kingdom was divided
Jeroboam made two golden calves
1 Kings 12:28 “28 So the king sought advice. Then he made two golden calves, and he said to the people, “Going to Jerusalem is too difficult for you. Israel, here are your gods who brought you up from the land of Egypt.””
Jeroboam as King brought Idolatry to Israel over fear of losing power.
This is six Kings before Ahab.
So 5 generations of Kings that didn’t follow the LORD!
1 Kings 17:1 CSB
1 Now Elijah the Tishbite, from the Gilead settlers, said to Ahab, “As the Lord God of Israel lives, in whose presence I stand, there will be no dew or rain during these years except by my command!”
Elijah:
Not a lot information about Elijah other than he is a Tishbite.
Elijah name “I live by the power of the LORD”
Ahab:
1 Kings 16:30 “30 But Ahab son of Omri did what was evil in the Lord’s sight more than all who were before him.” who ruled from approximately 874 to 853 B.C.
1 Kings 16:33 “33 Ahab also made an Asherah pole. Ahab did more to anger the Lord God of Israel than all the kings of Israel who were before him.”
Jezebel:
Her foreign background proves crucial to understanding her biblical significance. As a non-Israelite devoted to the Phoenician deities Baal and Asherah, she influenced her husband to worship them, leading him to build a temple dedicated to these gods and permit 450 prophets of Baal and 400 prophets of Asherah to dine in his palace
This religious orientation—rooted in her Phoenician heritage—placed her at odds with Israel’s prophetic tradition and the worship of Yahweh.
No dew, No rain during these years except by my command!”
Baal is the god of the rain and harvest.
The one true GOD challenges this false god Baal!
This seems hash. God waited 5 generations!
1 Kings 17:2–4 CSB
2 Then the word of the Lord came to him: 3 “Leave here, turn eastward, and hide at the Wadi Cherith where it enters the Jordan. 4 You are to drink from the wadi. I have commanded the ravens to provide for you there.”
1 Kings 17:5 CSB
5 So he proceeded to do what the Lord commanded. Elijah left and lived at the Wadi Cherith where it enters the Jordan.
1 Kings 17:6–7 CSB
6 The ravens kept bringing him bread and meat in the morning and in the evening, and he would drink from the wadi. 7 After a while, the wadi dried up because there had been no rain in the land.
“THE RAVENS” unclean birds did the work of the LORD!
Meat and Bread (Amen)
Who is Ahab?
Ahab listen to Jezebel his wife
Bowed and worship baal
setup an altar for baal in the temple of baal
He built the temple
1 Kings 16:33 “Ahab also made an Asherah pole. Ahab did more to anger the Lord God of Israel than all the kings of Israel who were before him.”
Elijah lives at wadi Cherith (key-rith) and the ravens provide him food.
who would like to have to give this message?
What has dried up in your life?
Relationship with the LORD, marriage , family, Job , Church.
Psalm 42:5 CSB
5 Why, my soul, are you so dejected? Why are you in such turmoil? Put your hope in God, for I will still praise him, my Savior and my God.
Where do you go when things dry up?
The Lord is waiting for you to seek HIM.
Don’t try to be the king of you own story.
