Introduction

Briefly hit Galatians 2:19-21
Galatians 3:1-5
“O foolish Galatians! Who has bewitched you?”
Paul opens with urgency.
They heard the gospel
They saw Christ clearly portrayed as crucified
They experienced the Spirit
Yet now… they are drifting.
Question: How does someone who knows the truth begin to walk away from it?

I. Foolishness: Rejecting What You Know About God (v.1)

“O foolish Galatians…”

A. Biblical Foolishness

Foolishness is not a lack of intelligence. It is not simply ignorance.
It is a failure to think and live rightly in light of what you know about God.
Jeremiah 4:22 – “They are foolish… they know not me”
Romans 1:21 – They knew God but did not honor Him
Key Insight: They had knowledge… but did not respond to it rightly.
Statement: Foolishness is not the absence of truth… it is living in contradiction to the truth you already know.

B. The Root of Foolishness

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.
Proverbs 1:7 – “Fools despise wisdom and instruction”
Proverbs 1:29 – “They did not choose the fear of the Lord”
Clarification: Foolishness is not just the opposite of wisdom—it is the rejection of it.
Key Truth: Foolishness is living as if God is not who He has revealed Himself to be.
Statement:
RC Story God has spoken—and that settles it…

Connection to Galatians

The Galatians:
Heard the gospel
Saw Christ clearly
Experienced the Spirit
Yet Paul calls them foolish.
Why? Because they are no longer thinking and living in line with what they know.

Transition

When we stop seeing God rightly, when we stop fearing the Lord and losing reverence for Him. we become vulnerable to believing what is not true.
And that is where deception begins.

II. Bewitching: Being Led Away from Truth (v.1)

Galatians 3:1
“Who has bewitched you?”

A. Meaning of Bewitched

To deceive, to charm, to lead astray as if under a spell
They were not forced away from truth They were persuaded away from truth

B. How the Deception Happened

False teachers came with:
Persuasive words
Religious language
They use scripture, guess what so did satan!
Ideas that sounded wise
That *FEELS* Right
They did not deny Christ—they added to Him
Christ + law
Christ + works
Christ + effort
Key Truth: The most dangerous deception is not rejecting the gospel, but subtly redefining it
Statement: They didn’t reject Jesus… they said He wasn’t enough

C. The Danger Then and Now

This same deception exists today: You hear:
“Jesus saves you, but you must keep yourself saved”
“Grace begins it, effort completes it”
“God accepts you more when you perform better”
Statement: Bewitching doesn’t remove Christ—it makes Him insufficient

Transition

When Christ is no longer seen as sufficient, we begin to rely on ourselves.

III. Distorting the Gospel: From Faith to Flesh (vv.2–5)

A. How Did You Begin? (v.2)

“Did you receive the Spirit by works of the law or by hearing with faith?”
They received the Spirit:
Not by works
Not by effort
But by faith
Key Truth: You were not worked into salvation—you were worked upon by God

B. The Core Problem (v.3)

“Having begun by the Spirit, are you now being perfected by the flesh?”
They believed:
Faith starts salvation
Works complete it
Statement: You didn’t start this—why are you trying to finish it?
Philippians 1:6
Clarify - An expression of the inward change that God has done

C. What Is the Flesh?

Galatians 3
We have talked about the flesh many times and how great it is right? WRONG being perfected by the flesh is:
Trusting your own ability
Depending on your own strength
Living independent from God
Important: The flesh can look religious
Discipline
Morality
Church activity
Statement: The flesh doesn’t always look sinful(outward appearance)—sometimes it looks spiritual

D. The Cross Contradicted

Christ was publicly portrayed as crucified
The cross shows:
We are helpless
Christ is sufficient
Statement: The cross is the end of all confidence in the flesh, for we must pick up our cross daily!

E. The Spirit Contradicted (vv.4–5)

They experienced:
The Spirit
Transformation
God’s power at work
Yet now they are trusting themselves
Key Truth: The Christian life continues the same way it begins—by faith

Transition

The problem is not that truth disappeared… it is that they stopped seeing clearly.
A veil of deception Paul had to call it out

IV. Spiritual Blindness: Seeing but Not Seeing

A. Illustration: Elisha and His Servant (2 Kings 6:8–17)

The servant sees the enemy → fear
Elisha sees reality → peace
Elisha prays:
“Lord, open his eyes”
Then the servant sees what was already there

B. The Truth

The reality never changed Only his sight did
Key Truth: Deception does not remove truth—it blinds you to it veil of deception

C. Connection to Galatians

Christ was clearly preached
The gospel was known
Truth was present
Yet they were acting as if it were not
Statement: The problem is there are a lot of times we know the truth but become foolish and ignore or think we know better

D. Application

We often:
Look at ourselves instead of Christ
Look at performance instead of grace
Look at effort instead of faith

V. The Mirror: We Are the Galatians

This is not just about them—it is about us
We fall into the same pattern:
Trusting performance
Living for approval
Measuring ourselves by effort
Statement: We preach grace… but we live like it’s up to us

VI. The Call: Return to Faith

The solution is not:
More effort
More striving
More pressure
The solution is:
Seeing Christ clearly again
Trusting Him fully again
Praying: Father help me to see you for who you really are

Exhortation

You began by faith You must continue by faith
You began by the Spirit You must continue by the Spirit

Conclusion

“Who has bewitched you?”
Christ was enough to save you
Christ is enough to sustain you
Final Statement Options:
The same faith that saved you is the faith that sustains you
