INTRODUCTION
The GOAT
There are moments in life when everything hinges on how closely you’re paying attention:
A coach before a championship game
A CEO before a major shift
A general before battle
In those moments:
You don’t lean back
You don’t get distracted
You lean in
That’s what the Sermon on the Mount is:
Not random teaching
Not scattered wisdom
Not inspirational thoughts
This is:
Jesus stepping onto the mountain
Speaking with authority
Inviting people into a new way of living
Key distinction:
The crowd was present
The disciples drew near
Bottom line:
The crowd listened
The disciples leaned in
Before Jesus teaches… how to live
He reveals who this is for
This is not for casual listeners
This is for committed followers
TENSION
We live in a world with constant access to Jesus:
Podcasts
Church services
Social media
Scripture anytime
But:
Access ≠ transformation
It’s possible to be:
In the room… but not engaged
Hearing the words… but not following
Close enough to listen… but not close enough to change
The crowd:
Heard everything
But all didn’t follow
And today:
We can attend church
Agree with Jesus
Stay comfortable
The danger:
Not rejecting Jesus
But keeping Him at a distance
Key tension:
Close enough to hear Him
Not close enough to follow Him
TRUTH
Matthew 5:1–2 “One day as he saw the crowds gathering, Jesus went up on the mountainside and sat down. His disciples gathered around him, and he began to teach them.”
1. The Mountain = Authority
In Scripture:
Mountains represent authority and encounter with God
Examples:
Moses received the Law on a mountain
God revealed Himself on mountains
Now:
Jesus goes up the mountain
Not to receive truth—but to declare it
Truth:
Jesus isn’t just a teacher
He speaks as King
2. The Disciples Drew Near
The crowd stayed back
The disciples moved closer
Following Jesus requires movement:
Movement of attention
Movement of priority
Movement of surrender
Discipleship begins when:
We stop observing Jesus
And start orienting our lives around Him
3. This Is Formation, Not Information
Jesus isn’t giving:
Helpful tips
Optional advice
He is describing:
Life under His rule
This sermon is not:
“Be a better person”
This sermon is:
“Follow me and live this way”
Important truth:
Without following Jesus → this feels impossible
With Jesus → this becomes transformational
APPLICATION — Step Out of the Crowd
Question: Am I listening to Jesus, or following Him?
1. Move Closer
Disciples don’t stay at a distance
This week:
Prioritize time with Jesus
Remove distractions
Lean in where you normally coast
Truth:
You don’t drift into discipleship
You choose it
2. Shift From Consumer to Follower
The crowd consumes
Disciples commit
He must become master…
Ask:
Am I here for information or transformation?
Do I pick what I like, or surrender to all He says?
Following Jesus means:
He sets the direction—not me
3. Decide Who You’ll Be in This Series
Over the next few weeks:
You’ll hear powerful teaching
You’ll be challenged
You’ll be stretched
Every week you choose:
The crowd
Or the disciple
This teaching will:
Confront you
Change you
Lead you into real life
