Earnest Heeding

The first four verses of Hebrew Chapter two is a conclusion to the opening arguments made in chapter One.
In chapter one we talked about the superiority of Christ
1. He is the Son of God 1:4
2. He has first place and is to be worshipped 1:6
3. He is so great that even the angels are to serve Him 1:7
4. Jesus is literally God on His throne 1:8
5. He is the Creator of the Universe 1:10-12
6. He is seated on His throne 1:13-14
Now we come to the closing Arguments the author is making to the Jewish listens of this epistle.
The Condition need to be met. Tending to the Soil.
Hebrews 2:1 “Therefore we ought to give the more earnest heed to the things which we have heard, lest at any time we should let them slip.”
Earnest Heed/Aeration, necessary Maintance
We need to practice exhortation we we are reading the word.
Being mindful of our walk with God is one of the foundation of keeping you on that narrow path.
Because of everything that we heard in the first chapter. This needs to be a top priority
Slip/ drift away
that word slip in being used to describe a washing away or a leaking .
if we are not careful with our studying of the word we can soon become forgetful of the word.
the world can become if something is important enough to you it won’t slip from your memory. So we should not allow the word to be the thing that slips.
the Parable of the sower comes to mind
Luke 8:4–8 “And when much people were gathered together, and were come to him out of every city, he spake by a parable: A sower went out to sow his seed: and as he sowed, some fell by the way side; and it was trodden down, and the fowls of the air devoured it. And some fell upon a rock; and as soon as it was sprung up, it withered away, because it lacked moisture. And some fell among thorns; and the thorns sprang up with it, and choked it. And other fell on good ground, and sprang up, and bare fruit an hundredfold. And when he had said these things, he cried, He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.”
When the Condition met the roots deepen and start to produce.
Understanding the risk of neglecting the soil
Hebrews 2:2 “For if the word spoken by angels was stedfast, and every transgression and disobedience received a just recompence of reward;”
The angels were messengers of God
They gave direction and protected when they spoke, they were relaying messages and announcements from God to the people.
What they said was bidding permanent. They would deliver God’s Judgement upon people.
Every transgression and disobedience recieved a just reward
Romans 6:23 KJV 1900
For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
If men trifle with the law of God, the law will not trifle with them; it has taken hold of the sinners of former ages, and will take hold of sinners in all ages. Matthew Henry,
Transgression willful disobedience--stepping across the line--commission-intentionally doing what you know is wrong-active sin
Disobedience is hearing and not doing, it is the sin of omission, neglect, doing nothing when we should do something, passive sin
Cursing or blaspheming God brought certain death Leviticus 24:14-16
Leviticus 24:14–16 KJV 1900
Bring forth him that hath cursed without the camp; and let all that heard him lay their hands upon his head, and let all the congregation stone him. And thou shalt speak unto the children of Israel, saying, Whosoever curseth his God shall bear his sin. And he that blasphemeth the name of the Lord, he shall surely be put to death, and all the congregation shall certainly stone him: as well the stranger, as he that is born in the land, when he blasphemeth the name of the Lord, shall be put to death.
Disobeying what you know is right brought death Numbers 15:30-36
Numbers 15:30–36 KJV 1900
But the soul that doeth ought presumptuously, whether he be born in the land, or a stranger, the same reproacheth the Lord; and that soul shall be cut off from among his people. Because he hath despised the word of the Lord, and hath broken his commandment, that soul shall utterly be cut off; his iniquity shall be upon him. And while the children of Israel were in the wilderness, they found a man that gathered sticks upon the sabbath day. And they that found him gathering sticks brought him unto Moses and Aaron, and unto all the congregation. And they put him in ward, because it was not declared what should be done to him. And the Lord said unto Moses, The man shall be surely put to death: all the congregation shall stone him with stones without the camp. And all the congregation brought him without the camp, and stoned him with stones, and he died; as the Lord commanded Moses.
God is the righteous judge, and so is his law. Those who go against the law will not go unpunished. 2:2
Based on what you know Matthew 11:20-24
Some get greater condemnation Mark 12:38-40
Hell is a very real place
Of eternal fire Matthew 25:41
The worm dies not Mark 9:43-44
Lake of fire Revelation 19:20
A bottomless pit Revelation 9:11
If you think the judgment is harsh with the small amount of knowledge that they had in the Old Testament how will it be in the New Testament Hebrews 10:28-29
Hebrews 10:28–29 KJV 1900
He that despised Moses’ law died without mercy under two or three witnesses: Of how much sorer punishment, suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy, who hath trodden under foot the Son of God, and hath counted the blood of the covenant, wherewith he was sanctified, an unholy thing, and hath done despite unto the Spirit of grace?
There is no escaping God’s Judgment and Wrath if you Neglect the salvation That is Offered.
God has abundantly confirmed all of this to us 2:3-4
At first these truths were spoken by the Lord Himself 2:3
They were confirmed to us by the apostles who heard Him 2:3
Jesus had shown Himself alive by many infallible proofs Acts 1:3
These weren't just fables they had seen the Lord II Peter 1:16
We saw, heard, and touched Him I John 1:1-2
The apostles had the witness of God
By their signs and wonders 2:4
Special gifts given by God to the apostles Acts 14:3
Mighty signs and wonders Romans 15:19
These were signs of an apostle II Corinthians 12:12
Divers miracles and gifts
For example tongues were given to be a sign to unbelievers I Corinthians 14:22
The Jews were looking for a sign I Corinthians 1:22
1 Corinthians 1:22 KJV 1900
For the Jews require a sign, and the Greeks seek after wisdom:
In Conclusion to the Conclusion
Given all that we know about the Lord and angels and Salvation.
To keep us from becoming apart of the ones who drift away. The harsh soil. The unfruitful ground. We must be focused on what we heard in regards to the word. We remember the judgement of God. And we must Trust in the Salvation given to by God.
