Tony van Drimmelen. Why are Christians so obsessed with the symbol of the cross -- a symbol of death and torture? Without the cross, the Christian faith would be a hollow religion, a sham and of no consequence. The cross is what gives the Christian faith its power, it defines Christianity. The Founder of Christianity died on a cross to bring about the greatest act of reconciliation the world has ever known. Forgiveness for sin, the removal of guilt and a right relationship with God are what the cross has accomplished. Christians celebrate that on Good Friday. With each of the seven words Jesus spoke while He was suffering and dying on the cross, we are reminded of His pain, purpose and provision in the gospel. It is why Christians are obsessed with the cross. The symbol of death and torture has become the wonderful news of life and hope for everyone who believes.
