Lies That Led To The Fall

Gen 3:1-7

God didn’t mean what He said (Gives Us Commands for Our Benefit)

Satan questions what God has actually said

Notice that within this story, there is not an overarching accusation of God being wrong

That’s noticeable. That’s evident.

Rather he simply calls into question and twists the words that God has said

Do you and I do this today? Maybe we don’t call into question what God has told us per say, but we twist some words to hear what we desire

“Well this is venting this isn’t gossip. I’m just expressing frustration”

“I’m called to love others and i do that with my friends pretty well”

“I know I should spend time with the Lord, but at least I go to church”

Sometimes when we step back and look at why we are justifying sin, we can find that we are believing lies the enemy has whispered to us. They aren’t always these grandiose contradictions to scripture, but far more often are subtle twistings of what it has to say

God doesn’t have your best interest at heart (Cares Deeply For His People)

“You will not surely die. Rather you will be enlightened”

Eve looked at this tree and in her heart began to question what God’s real intentions were

For if convinced He wants what’s best for her and for us, then she would not have contemplated his purpose

We look at Eve in hindsight and often question how she could do something like this

You had all the evidence of the Garden in front of you

everything was literally perfect

There was one simple boundary put in place. How could you go past that?

But how often in our own lives do we question this same thing?

“God I followed you, but heartache still accompanied me”

“God why is this sin actually that bad? Why can’t i just do what I want?”

“Why is there so much evil in the world around me?”

God Is Holding out on us (Given us more than we could imagine)

This is where dangerous things happen. This is where we believe that if God isn’t who he says he is, and he doesn’t care for us, he is withholding things from us

If we take this view, all of a sudden God goes from this loving figure we rejoice at, to the manipulative parent is trying to get their way

When we are called to abstain from sin, there is a progressing view that we are merely missing out on what we don’t understand

Deconstruction/Progressive

God wasn’t actually saying what we thought he was saying. Rather we were being kept from what was actually meant to happen

Even in the Garden believes the lie that God just doesn’t want us to experience “xyz”

Shockingly, for the third time, we still have these beliefs today

We’ve been warned against all these things, but we believe the subtle lie that they’re untrue
