Transgression of the Law
Notes
Transcript
There are many different laws around the world.
Some are view as restrictive.
New York Illegalized artificial trans fat.
Many argued...
Why?
It is their life.
If they like it,
they can do it.
In 2008, Japan enacted a national law requiring their citizens to have their waistline measured. Those Japanese whose waistline is greater than the government prescribed standard will undergo diet counseling.
God has laws.
Some view them
as restrictive.
Let us learn about:
Lawlessness
Lawlessness
Everyone who commits sin also breaks the law; sin is the breaking of law.
What is sin?
breaking the law.
Simple concept
No Law… No Sin...
No Law… No Sin...
No Speed Limit
German Autobahn
Limits are strictly enforced in
cities,
near interchanges,
in construction zones,
during poor weather
heavy traffic.
No law = no sin.
It is not wrong,
if the law does not prohibit it.
God wants
to make things simple.
He doesn’t want us
to guess if we
are in right standing.
Married men
come home.
Wife kind of silent...
What now...
Is she sick?
Is she tired?
Did I do something wrong?
Should I say something?
Don’t say anything!
Play it off...
God is not into
guessing games...
Ok.
We know what sin is.
We know when we are
right or wrong.
What next?
Take Away Sin
Take Away Sin
You know that he appeared in order to take away sins, and in him there is no sin.
What did Jesus come for?
To forgive sin?
To cover sin?
Take it away?
αἴρω
αἴρω
Simply means to take something from someone.
I took the basketball from James.
Not forgive.
Not cover.
To removed it
from someone.
Implies more than
forgiveness.
“cleansing”!
More than
a judicial decision to
exonerate the guilty individual.
More than
Expiation.
This involves
complex process
removing the sin
from the person.
Cancer surgery
He wants to offer us
grace and cleansing.
If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
God doesn’t just
forgive us.
He cleanses us!!!!
Let me her an Amen!
That is true gospel preaching.
This is true good news!
The false gospel
you don’t change...
Remember,
from previous sermon
made the point that
1 John is written to
argue against heresy
brewing in church
gnosticism.
Jesus didn’t come
in the flesh.
God can’t sin.
Other heresies.
“It is well to note, in the setting in which John makes the statement, that Christ was manifested to take away sin, not to take away law. The Gnostics wished to believe that the restraints, in the form of law, were removed in their case...”
Isn’t this,
the very teaching today?
God came to
forgive sins
remove law!
Nothing new
under the sun.
Same old heresy
dressed in new clothes.
John goes on
to clearly be
fighting against this
false ideology,
so popular today.
Shall We Keep on Sinning?
Shall We Keep on Sinning?
No one who abides in him keeps on sinning; no one who keeps on sinning has either seen him or known him.
What is the verb tense?
present
active
indicative.
The present active indicative Greek verb denotes an action performed by the subject in the present time, often emphasizing an ongoing, continuous.
The ESV correctly translates:
“keeps on sinning.”
“Continuous sinning...”
How much sin is continued sin?
1 sin
once per week?
once per month?
We miss the point...
habitual?
premeditated?
belligerent?
Notice that all of the verbs
in the verse are
present active.
(two are participles).
No one who abides in him keeps on sinning; no one who keeps on sinning has either seen him or known him.
Should have been written:
No one who continues to abide in Him continues to live in sin. No one who continues to live in sin has seen Him or known Him. - Great Carty Version
The question is:
What lifestyle are you pursuing?
life in Christ?
life in the world?
The truth is that
so often we try to
straddle the fence
play both sides.
God is making a point
choose a side.
choose a lifestyle.
Your lifestyle is your future.
In the 1950s a psychologist, Stanton Samenow, and a psychiatrist, Samuel Yochelson, sharing the conventional wisdom that crime is caused by environment, set out to prove their point. They began a 17-year study involving thousands of hours of clinical testing of 250 inmates here in the District of Columbia. To their astonishment, they discovered that the cause of crime cannot be traced to environment, poverty, or oppression. Instead, crime is the result of individuals making, as they put it, wrong moral choices. In their 1977 work The Criminal Personality, they concluded that the answer to crime is a, “Conversion of the wrong-doer to a more responsible lifestyle.”
In 1987, Harvard professors James Q. Wilson and Richard J. Herrnstein came to similar conclusions in their book Crime and Human Nature. They determined that the cause of crime is a lack of proper moral training among young people during the morally formative years, particularly ages one to six.

Immediately after sin
entered this world.
God gave us a gift to
pick a side.
The Gift of Hatred
The Gift of Hatred
You may be thinking,
I though hatred was bad...
How can that be from God?
It depends what you hate.
God hates...
There are six things that the Lord hates, seven that are an abomination to him:
It goes on to name
types of sin.
God hates.
God hates sin.
God want to give
us this same gift.
The gift of hatred.
It was promised to us
when sin entered the world:
I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel.”
We are the offspring of Eve.
Our enemy is Satan.
deceptions
lies
evil
world.
As we receive
this gift of enmity
(hatred).
We can choose
a different lifestyle.
That brings us to:
Practicing Righteousness
Practicing Righteousness
Very next verse:
Little children, let no one deceive you. Whoever practices righteousness is righteous, as he is righteous.
Once again,
bunch of same type verbs
present, active
verbs and participles.
Practicing righteousness...
once again
description of
choosing to live
a lifestyle.
Righteous
Righteous
It is a word
we are afraid of.
We often hear people say.
I’m not righteous.
I’ll never be righteous.
John is making it simple.
Those who are
choosing that lifestyle.
on that path.
choosing to walk that journey.
THEY ARE RIGHTEOUS!!!!
That is why Paul
addressed his letters to
the saint of that church:
Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, To the saints who are in Ephesus, and are faithful in Christ Jesus:
All the faithful,
those on the path.
those seeking christ.
are saints.
righteous ones.
Let me quote another verse
that balances what
I have just said.
as it is written: “None is righteous, no, not one;
At the beginning of the book
he called them saints.
Now says,
nobody is righteous.
Paul is differentiating between
two types of righteousness.
Absolutely Righteous
vs.
Righteousness by Faith
Only God is
absolutely righteous.
We can be righteous by
being forgiven
being cleansed
practicing that journey.
This happens through
the indwelling of
the Holy Spirit.
Working of the Holy Spirit
Working of the Holy Spirit
What does the Spirit
do for us:
And when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment:
The Holy Spirit
convicts us of
sin and righteousness.
Helps keep us on the path.
But there is more:
But if Christ is in you, although the body is dead because of sin, the Spirit is life because of righteousness.
continue
If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who dwells in you.
It is a miracle.
Like Christ resurrection
God resurrects our dead heart!
And I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you. And I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. And I will put my Spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes and be careful to obey my rules.
We were dying
on the donor list.
God gave us
heart transplant!
Notice what comes
along with this
heart transplant...
For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, declares the Lord: I will put my laws into their minds, and write them on their hearts, and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.
God gives us
love for
truth
laws
righteousness.
Continue in passage...
Whoever makes a practice of sinning is of the devil, for the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the works of the devil.
These are intense words!
Of The Devil
Of The Devil
How can God say that?
Satana CD
Maybe mom was right.
Notice the wording:
Whoever makes a practice of sinning is of the devil, for the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the works of the devil.
Once again
present active verbs:
meaning continuous state.
“Whoever makes a practice of sinning.”
This is not talking
about someone who
slipped up.
They have chosen
their lifestyle.
A lifestyle of the world.
If we choose
the lifestyle of the world:
Then what:
Whoever makes a practice of sinning is of the devil...
Everyone chooses
Everyone affirms that choice
each and every day.
The story is told of an atheistic barber who was talking to a pastor. The barber asked the pastor, “If there is a loving God, how can He allow poverty, war, and suffering?”
Just at that moment a disheveled man crossed the street. The pastor said, “You are a barber and claim to be a good one. How can you allow that man to go unkept and unshaven?”
“He never gave me a chance!” the barber replied.
To which the pastor said, “Exactly, men are what they are because they reject God!”
Do I want
lifestyle of righteousness today?
lifestyle of the Devil?
Today friends,
what are you choosing?
You are here
so I assume you have
chosen lifestyle of righteousness.
But...
Don’t play games
with God.

Pierre Barlot was a gunner in the fort of Mont Valerin during the Prussian siege of Paris. One day he was standing by his gun when General Noel, the commander, came up and leveled his glass at the Sevres bridge. “Gunner,” he said, “do you see the Sevres bridge over there?”
“Yes, sir.”
“And that little shanty in a thicket of shrubs to the left?”
“I see it, sir,” said Pierre, turning pale.
“It’s a nest of Prussians; try it with a shell, my man.”
Pierre turned paler still. He sighted his piece deliberately, carefully, then fired it. “Well hit, my man, well hit!” exclaimed the general. But as he looked at Pierre he was surprised to see a great tear running down the gunner’s cheek. “What’s the matter, man?”
“Pardon me, General,” said Pierre, “it was my house—everything I had in the world.”

Pierre Barlo took aim
and destroyed his own house.
Sin destroys our life.
Obedience takes aim
at our own evil heart
and pulls the trigger.
That can only be done
surrender to spirit
choose lifestyle
of obedience.
