After John was put in prison, Jesus went into Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God. “The time has come,” he said. “The kingdom of God has come near. Repent and believe the good news!”

Jesus’ Authority to Command Everyone

Kingdom - God’s Rule on Earth
God is ruling. Nothing happens except what He allows to work out his purposes, and to bring all things to the end He has planned.
But understand this.
God created everything. His the the Creator, the Owner, the Ruler over all his creation.
He delegated authority to man to rule over this world, under him.
Man chose to listen to and obey Satan.
That places Satan over man and the world.
Satan is now the ruler of this world. Jesus refers to him as the prince of this world (John 12.31, 14.30, 16.11). Elsewhere, through Paul’s writings God refers to him as the ‘god of this age’ (2 Cor 4.4), and ‘the ruler of the kingdom of the air’ (Eph 2.2). In John’s letters God tells us,
1 John 5:19 NIV
We know that we are children of God, and that the whole world is under the control of the evil one.
But God’s Kingdom, God’s establishment of his direct rule over the earth is coming.
Mark 1:15 NIV
“The time has come,” he said. “The kingdom of God has come near. Repent and believe the good news!”
As the creator and ruler, he has absolute authority to command, to demand that everyone Repent and believe.
Acts 17:30–31 NIV
In the past God overlooked such ignorance, but now he commands all people everywhere to repent. For he has set a day when he will judge the world with justice by the man he has appointed. He has given proof of this to everyone by raising him from the dead.”
Repent and believe. the Kingdom is coming. The judgment is coming. We will say more of this in a bit.
Mark 1:16–20 NIV
As Jesus walked beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. “Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.” At once they left their nets and followed him. When he had gone a little farther, he saw James son of Zebedee and his brother John in a boat, preparing their nets. Without delay he called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men and followed him.

Jesus’ Authority to Call Disciples

They had to leave behind their old lives.
Radical obedience to the one who called them.
Focused time with Jesus, their Lord.
Focused mission given to them by their Lord.
Mark 1:21–28 NIV
They went to Capernaum, and when the Sabbath came, Jesus went into the synagogue and began to teach. The people were amazed at his teaching, because he taught them as one who had authority, not as the teachers of the law. Just then a man in their synagogue who was possessed by an impure spirit cried out, “What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God!” “Be quiet!” said Jesus sternly. “Come out of him!” The impure spirit shook the man violently and came out of him with a shriek. The people were all so amazed that they asked each other, “What is this? A new teaching—and with authority! He even gives orders to impure spirits and they obey him.” News about him spread quickly over the whole region of Galilee.

Jesus’ Authority to Teach

He is the way, the truth, and the life. We need to learn from him.
There are so many voices around us. Social Media. The education system. The news media. The entertainment media.
They are all working to indoctrinate in the ways of the world, in the way of thinking of the world.
We need to spend time with the truth teacher, Jesus. We need to have our hearts and minds filled with the truth that sets us free. We need his authority and his teaching.
His teaching, the truth can truly change us, setting us free from the bondage in which the teaching of the world keeps us.

Jesus’ Authority Over Demons

It is true that there are demons in this world. More than we can imagine. They are real, and they are at work around us. We do not pay much attention to them in our western society which downplays the spiritual realm in favor of observable science. But it is real. As Paul tells us through the Spirit, Ephesians 6:12 “For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.”
The battle is real, and we need to be prepared for it with the Armor of God.
The breastplate of righteousness - Christ’s righteousness given to us through faith in his death and resurrection
The belt of truth - Jesus, his word, his teaching
The peace of the gospel - the good news that he has come to give us his peace, the One who has overcome the world!
The helmet of salvation - the justification that he has given to us
The sword of the spirit, the word of God, the truth taught by Jesus.
Prayer - relying upon him who has overcome who has all authority and power. Who has disarmed the powers and authorities by taking away their power when he died for sin, destroying sin and death on the cross. he set free all of us who were so long in fear of death.
Logos Digital Hymnal A Mighty Fortress is Our God

And tho’ this world, with devils filled,

Should threaten to undo us,

We will not fear, for God hath willed

His truth to triumph thro’ us;

The prince of Darkness grim,

We tremble not for him;

His rage we can endure,

For lo, his doom is sure,

One little word shall fell him.

4 That word above all earthly pow’rs,

No thanks to them, abideth;

The Spirit and the gifts are ours Thro’

Him who with us sideth:

Let goods and kindred go,

This mortal life also;

The body they may kill:

God’s truth abideth still,

His kingdom is forever.

Mark 1:29–34 NIV
As soon as they left the synagogue, they went with James and John to the home of Simon and Andrew. Simon’s mother-in-law was in bed with a fever, and they immediately told Jesus about her. So he went to her, took her hand and helped her up. The fever left her and she began to wait on them. That evening after sunset the people brought to Jesus all the sick and demon-possessed. The whole town gathered at the door, and Jesus healed many who had various diseases. He also drove out many demons, but he would not let the demons speak because they knew who he was.

Jesus’ Authority Over Sickness

Mark 1:40–45 NIV
A man with leprosy came to him and begged him on his knees, “If you are willing, you can make me clean.” Jesus was indignant. He reached out his hand and touched the man. “I am willing,” he said. “Be clean!” Immediately the leprosy left him and he was cleansed. Jesus sent him away at once with a strong warning: “See that you don’t tell this to anyone. But go, show yourself to the priest and offer the sacrifices that Moses commanded for your cleansing, as a testimony to them.” Instead he went out and began to talk freely, spreading the news. As a result, Jesus could no longer enter a town openly but stayed outside in lonely places. Yet the people still came to him from everywhere.

Jesus’ Authority Over Leprosy/to Make Clean

Leprous - Unclean! Unclean!
Leviticus 13:45–46 NIV
“Anyone with such a defiling disease must wear torn clothes, let their hair be unkempt, cover the lower part of their face and cry out, ‘Unclean! Unclean!’ As long as they have the disease they remain unclean. They must live alone; they must live outside the camp.
Why indignant?
Why a warning?
this man had faith Jesus could heal him, but I do not believe he was repentant. Why would I say that?
Did he obey Jesus after his healing? No.
Jesus knew this man’s heart. He still healed him, to show who he was.
The sign of Leprosy - rules given to show priests when cured of leprosy. God alone could do this, and it only ever happened with Miriam, and with Naaman.
The Jews took this as a sign that the God sent Messiah would heal a leper, which would be verified by the priests as prescribed in Leviticus 14.
Mark 2:1–12 NIV
A few days later, when Jesus again entered Capernaum, the people heard that he had come home. They gathered in such large numbers that there was no room left, not even outside the door, and he preached the word to them. Some men came, bringing to him a paralyzed man, carried by four of them. Since they could not get him to Jesus because of the crowd, they made an opening in the roof above Jesus by digging through it and then lowered the mat the man was lying on. When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralyzed man, “Son, your sins are forgiven.” Now some teachers of the law were sitting there, thinking to themselves, “Why does this fellow talk like that? He’s blaspheming! Who can forgive sins but God alone?” Immediately Jesus knew in his spirit that this was what they were thinking in their hearts, and he said to them, “Why are you thinking these things? Which is easier: to say to this paralyzed man, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Get up, take your mat and walk’? But I want you to know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins.” So he said to the man, “I tell you, get up, take your mat and go home.” He got up, took his mat and walked out in full view of them all. This amazed everyone and they praised God, saying, “We have never seen anything like this!”

Jesus’ Authority to Forgive

Contrast Jesus reaction to the paralyzed man and the man who had leprosy.
The man with leprosy came for healing from leprosy, but not in repentance and faith, wanting to turn to Jesus and believe in him.
The paralyzed man and his friends came to Jesus in repentance and faith. How do we know?
Forgiveness is only given to those who are repentant and have faith in Jesus.
Jesus came preaching, Repent! The kingdom of God is near!
The Kingdom of God is a righteous kingdom, and only the righteous may enter it.
Who is righteous? No one.
The only way to be righteous is to be forgiven, and declared righteous by the judge of the universe. Who is that?
God… yes. More specifically, Jesus.
John 8:34–36 NIV
Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, everyone who sins is a slave to sin. Now a slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son belongs to it forever. So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.
John 5:22 NIV
Moreover, the Father judges no one, but has entrusted all judgment to the Son,
John 5:24–27 NIV
“Very truly I tell you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be judged but has crossed over from death to life. Very truly I tell you, a time is coming and has now come when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God and those who hear will live. For as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son also to have life in himself. And he has given him authority to judge because he is the Son of Man.
Jesus is the Judge. He has all authority to judge. As judge he will do one of two things:
Condemn
Justify
Jesus has authority:
To Judge
To Make Clean
To Heal
To Teach
To Call
To Command
