That you may know 5:13-17

INTRO

Good morning, you can turn to 1 John 5 and we will be starting in verse 13. If you don’t have a Bible, use one of ours and turn to page 1,854.

-Next series 2 & 3rd john

-We have learned a lot and I’m tempted to review but I won’t because we actually have a lot to discuss in these 5 small but packed full verses. So, let’s pray and there will probably be review along the way.

English Standard Version Chapter 5

13 I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life.

-John wants us to have a confidence that we have eternal life. Why? Because false teachers were saying there was a different way to eternal life.

-So while I could review the whole book let’s make this simple.

You know you have eternal life if you believe in the name of the Son of God.

-So John has made it clear what this means. You are not confessing to walk in the light, and walking in the dark. You are not coninuing to walk in sin, you see that Christ has set you free from it. You know that God has filled you with His Spirit so you can discern antichrists. You love God by loving others. You love others by loving God and obeying his commandments.

-Why would you even want eternal life if you are not following Jesus right now?

-John says, your believing in Jesus will produce fruit in your life. And that fruit is the confidence that you have eternal life.

English Standard Version Chapter 5

14 And this is the confidence that we have toward him, that if we ask anything according to his will he hears us. 15 And if we know that he hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have the requests that we have asked of him.

-How do we have confidence before God? Belief in his son. Why? He is our propitiation, our advocate, the one mediator so we have a relationship with the father because he has cleansed us from all unrighteousness.

-Ask anything? According to his will. What is his will?

-If I preach this well, I am convinced our morning prayer times will be filled up.

-PRAY THE WORD. Demonstration?

-What requests are you asking? Do you understand that he has given you them?

English Standard Version Chapter 5

16 If anyone sees his brother committing a sin not leading to death, he shall ask, and God will give him life—to those who commit sins that do not lead to death. There is sin that leads to death; I do not say that one should pray for that. 17 All wrongdoing is sin, but there is sin that does not lead to death.

-John is still talking about prayer here. But also, what the heck is going on here?

-What is the sin that does not lead to death? And if all wrongdoing is sin, and the wages of sin is death, then how is there sin that does lead to death and sin that doesn’t lead to death?

-I don’t claim to know everything but I believe this is what John is trying to communicate.

We should pray for others committing sin so they can repent and God will give them life.

-You see a brother walking in sin, pray first. Then confront. Don’t think that you are going to change his heart, that is God’s job. He gives life.

-This is why it is connected with prayer and praying God’s will. He desires all to be saved and wants to give life!

-But here is the tension…

Sin that leads to death is unrepentant sin

-How come we shouldn’t pray for this? Shouldn’t we? John thinks no because ultimately at the end of the day, we don’t change people. These people are against the Spirit, against Christ, and stuck in darkness.

-How do we sit with this?

-We go back to a place of shining and abiding. Believing that what we have can fill us with joy. It’s not that you and I don’t care about them, we just don’t change people!

-Let us turn to what he has given us. Prayer. Fellowship.

Exalting Jesus in 1,2,3 John We Can Know that God Answers Prayer (1 John 5:14–17)

Might not we win more victories if we more constantly used this weapon of all-prayer? All hell is vanquished when the believer bows his knee in importunate (Persistant) supplication. Beloved brethren, let us pray. We cannot all argue, but we can all pray; we cannot all be leaders, but we can all be pleaders; we cannot all be mighty in rhetoric, but we can all be prevalent in prayer. I would sooner see you eloquent with God than with men. Prayer links us with the Eternal, the Omnipotent, the Infinite; and hence it is our chief resort. Resolve to serve the Lord, and to be faithful to His cause, for then you may boldly appeal to Him for succour (relief). Be sure that you are with God, and then you may be sure that God is with you.

Let us be confident in our eternal life

Let us be confident that he hears our prayer

Let us be confident in Him and His ways.
