Introduction

Greetings…
Today we are continuing our series of lessons here on Sunday mornings on “Lessons From Lyric Titles.”
As we just sang the song of our study this morning, “A Common Love,” I hope to impart the vital importance of such a powerful statement.
The word “love” is found 745 times in the ESV.
That is no small number, and demonstrates the importance of such a concept.
As Christian we are to strive to love one another in a common love for each other.
John 13:34 ESV
34 A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another.
So with that in mind, let us consider what a common love strives for.
A common love strives for…

A Unity Of The Spirit

Walks According To The Spirit

Those focused on their unity of Spirit with God will walk in a manner worthy of their calling.
Walking according to the Spirit of God means walking in humility.
Philippians 2:5–8 ESV
5 Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, 6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. 8 And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.
James 4:10 ESV
10 Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will exalt you.
Walking according to the Spirit of God means walking in gentleness.
Isaiah 40:11 ESV
11 He will tend his flock like a shepherd; he will gather the lambs in his arms; he will carry them in his bosom, and gently lead those that are with young.
Galatians 6:1 ESV
1 Brothers, if anyone is caught in any transgression, you who are spiritual should restore him in a spirit of gentleness. Keep watch on yourself, lest you too be tempted.
Walking according to the Spirit of God means walking in patience.
2 Peter 3:9 ESV
9 The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance.
Colossians 3:12 ESV
12 Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience

Summary

When we walk according to the Spirit we find ourselves achieving the unity of the Spirit.
A bond of peace with one another in Christ that is made strong due to our fellowship and common love for not only our Creator but…

A Love For One Another

A Common Love

Our love for one another in Christ finds its foundation in God’s love for us.
1 John 4:7–9 ESV
7 Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God. 8 Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love. 9 In this the love of God was made manifest among us, that God sent his only Son into the world, so that we might live through him.
1 John 4:10–12 ESV
10 In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins. 11 Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. 12 No one has ever seen God; if we love one another, God abides in us and his love is perfected in us.
This means that to love each other we must love as God loves.
We love each other, as God loves, by wanting all of us to spend an eternity with God.
1 Timothy 2:3–4 ESV
3 This is good, and it is pleasing in the sight of God our Savior, 4 who desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.
1 Thessalonians 2:19–20 ESV
19 For what is our hope or joy or crown of boasting before our Lord Jesus at his coming? Is it not you? 20 For you are our glory and joy.
We love each other, as God loves, by holding each other spiritually accountable.
Hebrews 12:7 ESV
7 It is for discipline that you have to endure. God is treating you as sons. For what son is there whom his father does not discipline?
2 Thessalonians 3:14–15 ESV
14 If anyone does not obey what we say in this letter, take note of that person, and have nothing to do with him, that he may be ashamed. 15 Do not regard him as an enemy, but warn him as a brother.
We love each other, as God loves, by helping and encouraging each other through the tough times.
Psalm 46:1 ESV
1 God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.
Galatians 6:2 ESV
2 Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.
1 Thessalonians 5:11 ESV
11 Therefore encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing.

Summary

Everyone striving to spend an eternity with God in heaven will not only seek the love of God and to love their God, but to love each other as well.
1 John 2:9–10 ESV
9 Whoever says he is in the light and hates his brother is still in darkness. 10 Whoever loves his brother abides in the light, and in him there is no cause for stumbling.

Conclusion

A Common Love
A common love for each other.
A common gift to the Savior.
A common bond holding us to the Lord.
A common strength when we are weary.
A common hope for tomorrow.
A common joy in the truth of God’s word.
Maybe it is the case you have not been experiencing the “common love” we are to have for one another.
Let this family strive to remedy that for you today.
If it is because you are in need of becoming a part of the family of God, by obeying the gospel and coming out of that watery grave of baptism to walk in the newness of life, then why not make that right this morning?
If it is because you are in need of growing closer to your family here in the house of God, let this family wrap our arms around you, encourage you, and help you to see the love of God through us.
Invitation
Isaiah 59:1–2 ESV
1 Behold, the Lord’s hand is not shortened, that it cannot save, or his ear dull, that it cannot hear; 2 but your iniquities have made a separation between you and your God, and your sins have hidden his face from you so that he does not hear.
Philippians 2:6–7 ESV
6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men.
Romans 10:17 ESV
17 So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.
Hebrews 11:6 ESV
6 And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.
Acts 17:30 ESV
30 The times of ignorance God overlooked, but now he commands all people everywhere to repent
Luke 14:33 ESV
33 So therefore, any one of you who does not renounce all that he has cannot be my disciple.
Matthew 10:32–33 NKJV
32 Therefore whoever confesses Me before men, him I will also confess before My Father who is in heaven. 33 But whoever denies Me before men, him I will also deny before My Father who is in heaven.
2 Thessalonians 1:8 ESV
8 in flaming fire, inflicting vengeance on those who do not know God and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus.
1 Corinthians 15:1–4 ESV
1 Now I would remind you, brothers, of the gospel I preached to you, which you received, in which you stand, 2 and by which you are being saved, if you hold fast to the word I preached to you—unless you believed in vain. 3 For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, 4 that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures
Romans 6:3–5 ESV
3 Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 4 We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life. 5 For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his.
1 John 1:7 ESV
7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.
James 1:12 ESV
12 Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love him.
