Prisoners of Hope: Serving God Boldly
Bible Passage: Ephesians 3:1–7
Bible Passage: Ephesians 3:1–7
Introduction
Introduction
“Have you ever felt stuck?”
Stuck in a job you didn’t choose
Stuck in a situation you can’t fix
Stuck in a season you didn’t plan
Maybe you have asked questions like:
“God, why am I here?”
“What’s the point of this?”
What if the place you feel most stuck… is actually the place God wants to use you the most?
When Paul writes Ephesians 3, he’s not on a beach… he’s not in a church… he’s not on a mission trip…
He’s in prison.
And yet—this is one of the most hope-filled, purpose-driven passages in the New Testament.
Because Paul understood something we often forget:
Your situation does not define your usefulness—your calling does and your God does.
1. Purpose in Prison (Ephesians 3:1–2)
1. Purpose in Prison (Ephesians 3:1–2)
Remember now last week we talked about the wall of division being brought down by the blood of Christ
Although salvation came first to the Jews, through the Jewish Messiah, salvation was brought to the whole world
Paul now continues this thought but now focuses on his mission for this message
Paul identifies himself as a prisoner of Christ Jesus, not of Rome
His identity is rooted in who he belongs to, not his circumstances
“For the sake of you Gentiles” shows his suffering has purpose
Although he was a Jew, and Pharisee of Pharisees, he was called to something that might have seemed different.
He was called to preach to the Gentiles, to you and me
Paul sees calling where others would only see chains
His imprisonment is connected to God’s mission, not just his situation
APPLICATION: What are you currently viewing as a “prison” in your life?
Is it your job? Do you feel like in your job you feel like you are stuck with no where to go? Or is that the point?
Are you without work and searching for a job and nothing seems to break through? Instead of only focusing on what’s ahead, look at what is here now.
Are you earnestly seeking a spouse, a godly marriage, and so you are so focused on finding the person to marry that you are missing people to minister to?
APPLICATION: Consider how your situation might actually be a place God wants to use you!
Perhaps your job isn’t showing an opportunity for corporate advancement, but Gospel advancement!
APPLICATION: Shift your question from “How do I get out?” to “God, how do you want to use me here?”
Scripture is full of times where people are in places and situations they didn’t quite imagine themselves in.
But God decreed that’s where they would be!
I think of the story of Joseph in Genesis 37-50
Sold into slavery by his brothers
Falsely accused and thrown into prison
He could have spent years asking, “How do I get out of here?”
Instead, God was positioning him to save nations from famine
What felt like a prison became a platform for God’s provision
2. Mysteries Made Known (Ephesians 3:3–5)
2. Mysteries Made Known (Ephesians 3:3–5)
The “mystery” refers to something once hidden but now revealed by God
It is not a mystery in the sense that we can’t explain it
It is a mystery that we can explain and understand because it is a revelation, or uncovering from God
This mystery is centered on Christ and God’s plan of salvation
Previous generations did not fully understand what is now clearly revealed
God revealed this truth directly to Paul by revelation
Paul’s hardship did not prevent revelation; it was part of the process
APPLICATION: God may be using your current season to reveal something deeper to you
APPLICATION: Ask, “God, what are you teaching me right now?”
APPLICATION: Do not waste seasons of struggle—look for God’s voice and direction in them
I can share with you an example from just this morning
I came into church expecting to do announcements and hear from the Word of God
I had a missed call from Chris Dubler at 6 AM but I figured that was an accident
Come to hear - John is sick and we need a preacher. I felt from God that this was a time for me to step in
Funny enough - I was WIDE AWAKE last night for hours. The thought came to me, get up and read
Did I?
No
Should I have?
Yes
Although God was intending to help me, I resisted it, and by my own fault, I wasted a very short time that God could have used to prepare me
Yet, in God’s grace, He is going to accomplish His mission anyway
Don’t waste your struggles - don’t fall into victim mentality
There is no victim in Christ, there are only victors
Romans 8:37 “Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us.”
3. Mission of Mercy (Ephesians 3:6–7
3. Mission of Mercy (Ephesians 3:6–7
The mystery revealed is that Gentiles are fellow heirs, members of one body
The Gospel breaks down barriers and includes all people in Christ
His role is a result of God’s grace, not his own merit
God’s power is what enables him to fulfill his calling
It was a mystery that he would be a aposlte to the gentiles
moses with a speech problem
david being the youngest and smallest
gideon hiding
jonah running away
You can only be effective in your mission when you realize it’s all because of God’s grace and the working of his power
You will never find success in your calling until you give up
Give up your power, your goals, your mindset - and rely on the mystery in this passage
And guess what - this is for all of you
APPLICATION: You are included in God’s mission, not just church leaders or pastors
APPLICATION: Even in difficulty, you are called to serve and share the Gospel
APPLICATION: Ask, “Where has God placed me right now to impact others?”
Conclusion
Conclusion
The biggest mystery about this passage is the fact that we have good news at all
Many times people ask - How could a loving God send people to Hell?
While this is an invalid question… One question I never hear is this:
How could a justify
Paul’s imprisonment reflects the pattern seen in Christ’s suffering
Jesus’ suffering and death brought salvation and freedom
God uses hardship to accomplish His redemptive purposes
Your situation does not limit your usefulness in God’s kingdom
Your calling remains active regardless of your circumstances
APPLICATION: Identify the area in your life where you feel restricted or stuck
APPLICATION: Reframe that situation as a place of purpose, not punishment
APPLICATION: Take one intentional step this week to serve, encourage, or share the Gospel where you are
God does not waste difficult seasons; He uses them for His glory and your growth
