Text: Romans 12:1–2 (ESV)

Series: Journey’s Road Map

Theme: True worship is not just what we say—it’s how we live, fully surrendered and continually transformed.

Introduction – The Problem with Partial Commitment

Funny Story with a Point

A man joined a gym and told the trainer,

“I want to get in shape, but I don’t want to change what I eat… I don’t want to sweat… and I definitely don’t want to feel sore.”

The trainer looked at him and said,

“So… you want results without transformation?”

That’s exactly how a lot of people approach the Christian life.

“I want forgiveness… but not surrender.”

“I want heaven… but not holiness.”

“I want God… but on my terms.”

Romans 12:1–2 says:

That’s not how this works.

A Living Sacrifice

12 I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. 2 Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.

Point 1 — True Worship Is Total Surrender (v. 1)

“I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice…”

Explanation

“Therefore” connects everything back to Romans 1–11.

Because of:

mercy

grace

justification

adoption

sovereignty

Paul says: offer yourself to God.

Not part of you.

Not Sundays only.

Your whole life.

“Living sacrifice” is a shocking phrase.

In the Old Testament, sacrifices died.

Now the sacrifice lives.

Key Truth

God doesn’t want something from you.

He wants you.

Cross-References

Luke 9:23 — “Take up your cross daily”

1 Corinthians 6:19–20 — “You are not your own”

Illustration – The Chicken and the Pig

Someone once said:

The chicken contributes to breakfast.

The pig is fully committed.

The chicken gives eggs.

The pig gives everything.

God is not asking for contribution.

He is calling for commitment.

Quote — D.L. Moody

“The problem with a living sacrifice is that it keeps crawling off the altar.”

Application

Surrender is not a one-time moment.

It is a daily decision.

Every day you climb back onto the altar.

Point 2 — Transformation Requires a New Mind (v. 2a)

“Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind…”

Explanation

Two forces are at work:

Conformed (συσχηματίζεσθε) = pressed into the world’s mold

Transformed (μεταμορφόω) = changed from the inside out

The world works from the outside in.

God works from the inside out.

Transformation begins in the mind.

Cross-References

Colossians 3:2 — “Set your minds on things above”

Philippians 4:8 — Think on what is true and pure

Illustration – The Thermostat vs Thermometer

A thermometer reflects the temperature.

A thermostat changes it.

Most people just reflect the culture around them.

Christians are called to change the environment.

Quote — C.S. Lewis

“Education without values, as useful as it is, seems rather to make man a more clever devil.”

Application

What you think shapes how you live.

If you feed your mind the world, you’ll reflect the world.

If you feed your mind truth, you’ll reflect Christ.

Point 3 — God’s Will Is Good, Not Burdensome (v. 2b)

“That by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.”

Explanation

God’s will is described three ways:

Good — beneficial

Acceptable — pleasing

Perfect — complete

Many people fear God’s will.

Paul says God’s will is not something to avoid—it is something to embrace.

Cross-References

Psalm 37:23 — “The steps of a man are established by the Lord”

Proverbs 3:5–6 — “He will make straight your paths”

Illustration – Trusting the Guide

A hiker once ignored a guide’s instructions and took a “shortcut.”

Hours later, he was lost, exhausted, and in danger.

The guide’s path wasn’t restrictive—it was protective.

God’s will is not limiting your life.

It is leading you to the best life.

Quote — A.W. Tozer

“The will of God is not a place but a state of heart.”

Application

Stop asking, “What do I want to do?”

Start asking, “What does God want to do in me?”

When your mind is renewed, God’s will becomes clear.

Conclusion — Worship That Lives

Romans 12:1–2 teaches:

Worship is surrender

Transformation starts in the mind

God’s will is good

Christianity is not about attending church.

It’s about offering your life.

Final Reflection

You are already living for something.

The only question is:

Is it worth your life?

Closing Line

“The greatest act of worship is not raising your hands—it’s surrendering your life.”
