The Example of Love 34

Jesus is the example. Not culture, not hallmark.

When Jesus tells them to love one another He points to himself as the standard, pattern and example of what Love is.

Obedience

John 4:34 NKJV

Jesus said to them, “My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me, and to finish His work.

Sacrifice

John 15:13 NKJV

Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends.

Truth

John 8:32 NKJV

And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”

Compassion

Matthew 9:36 NKJV

But when He saw the multitudes, He was moved with compassion for them, because they were weary and scattered, like sheep having no shepherd.

What are some biblical way to love one another?

Pray for one another

James 5:16 NKJV

Confess your trespasses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much.

Speak the Truth to one another

Ephesians 4:15 NKJV

but, speaking the truth in love, may grow up in all things into Him who is the head—Christ—

Serve one another

Galatians 5:13 NKJV

For you, brethren, have been called to liberty; only do not use liberty as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another.

Encourage one another

Hebrews 10:25 NKJV

not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching.

Forbear with one another

Colossians 3:13 NKJV

bearing with one another, and forgiving one another, if anyone has a complaint against another; even as Christ forgave you, so you also must do.

Forbear is to patiently bear with someones weakness, faults or irritations.

Quarrel - a complaint, grievance, irritation, or relational rub, personality clash.

This is not the word for sin, transgression, or evil. It is the word for the stuff that annoys you about people.

The Effect of Love 35

Jesus teaches that all will know that we are His disciples if we have love for one another.

As the church of Jesus Christ demonstrates love for its members a light and testimony go out for a testimony for all to see.

Jesus is using evangelistic language in the text.

Our love for each other is the visible proof to everyone else that we belong to Him.

Let us love one another because we

Love the Lord

Love one another

Love the Lost

Application: If we don’t have love for one another all we accomplish is vain.
