Bible Passage

Psalm 91 KJV 1900
He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High Shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress: My God; in him will I trust. Surely he shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler, And from the noisome pestilence. He shall cover thee with his feathers, And under his wings shalt thou trust: His truth shall be thy shield and buckler. Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night; Nor for the arrow that flieth by day; Nor for the pestilence that walketh in darkness; Nor for the destruction that wasteth at noonday. A thousand shall fall at thy side, And ten thousand at thy right hand; But it shall not come nigh thee. Only with thine eyes shalt thou behold And see the reward of the wicked. Because thou hast made the Lord, which is my refuge, Even the most High, thy habitation; There shall no evil befall thee, Neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling. For he shall give his angels charge over thee, To keep thee in all thy ways. They shall bear thee up in their hands, Lest thou dash thy foot against a stone. Thou shalt tread upon the lion and adder: The young lion and the dragon shalt thou trample under feet. Because he hath set his love upon me, therefore will I deliver him: I will set him on high, because he hath known my name. He shall call upon me, and I will answer him: I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him, and honour him. With long life will I satisfy him, And shew him my salvation.
Introduction — You Were Never Walking Alone
As we prepare our hearts for God's Word,
I summon your senses and invite your intellect to the book of Psalms,
chapter 91.
And it is there that the Holy Spirit has highlighted our context
for our sermonic time together this morning.

Introduction

My brothers & Sisters,
Have you ever walked through something so dark,
so uncertain,
so overwhelming —
that you were convinced nobody was with you?
You looked to your left
nobody was there.
You looked to your right
nobody was there.
You called for help
and the phone just rang.
You cried out in the night
and the ceiling felt like concrete.
You thought you were abandoned.
You thought you were forgotten.
You thought God had moved on to somebody more qualified.
But I came to tell somebody in this room today —
**you were never walking alone!**
While you were crying, heaven was dispatching.
While you were worrying, angels were mobilizing.
While the enemy was plotting, God was positioning.
You didn't see them —
but they were there.
You didn't feel them —
but they were working.
You didn't hear them —
but they were fighting on your behalf.
The Psalmist said it in verse 11 —
_"For He shall give His angels charge over you,_
_to keep you in ALL your ways."_
Not SOME of your ways.
Not your SUNDAY ways.
Not your PUBLIC ways.
**ALL your ways!**
The highway — angels.
The hospital room — angels.
The courtroom — angels.
The classroom — angels.
The living room where you cried yourself to sleep — **angels!**
You have never been as alone as the enemy made you think you were.

## I. The Secret Place — Where the Assignment Begins
Now let me walk you into this Psalm.
Because this is not just a poem.
This is a covenant declaration.
This is a soldier's anthem.
This is God Himself making a promise to His people.
But look at how the Psalm starts.
Verse 1:
_"He who DWELLS in the secret place of the Most High…"_
Now catch this.
The promise of angelic protection is not for the casual believer.
The promise is for the one who **dwells**.
Dwell means to live there.
Dwell means to stay there.
Dwell means to set up residence.
Not visit.
Not vacation.
Not stop by when things get rough.
**Dwell.**
See, some of us treat God's presence like a hotel room —
we check in when we're tired and check out when we feel better.
But God says the protection is for the one who **lives** in My presence.
The secret place is not a physical location.
It's a spiritual posture.
It's the place of prayer.
It's the place of worship.
It's the place where you shut the world out
and open heaven up.
And when you dwell there —
when your heart is anchored there —
God says, "Now you're under My shadow."
And when you're under the shadow of the Almighty,
the enemy has to get through GOD to get to YOU.
Some of you are wondering why the attack didn't finish you.
It's because you were hidden.
Not hidden by your own cleverness.
Not hidden by your connections.
**Hidden by the Most High God.**
Verse 2 says, _"I will say of the LORD, He is my refuge and my fortress."_
A refuge is where you run TO.
A fortress is what stands AGAINST the attack.
God is both.
He's where you run,
and He's what stands between you and destruction.
You don't have to be strong enough.
You don't have to be smart enough.
You just have to be **close enough.**
Close enough to the One who has the power
to assign angels to your situation.

## II. The Snare Was Set — But You Were Delivered
Now watch this — verse 3:
_"Surely He shall deliver you from the SNARE of the fowler."_
A snare is a trap.
A fowler is a bird hunter.
In the ancient world, a fowler would study the bird's patterns.
He would learn where the bird lands.
He would learn what the bird eats.
He would learn where the bird feels safe.
And then he would set the trap — RIGHT THERE.
Now tell me that doesn't sound like the devil.
The enemy studies your patterns.
He knows where you're weak.
He knows what tempts you.
He knows where you let your guard down.
And that's exactly where he sets the trap.
He'll set a trap in your marriage.
He'll set a trap in your finances.
He'll set a trap in your emotions.
He'll set a trap at your job,
on your phone,
in your inbox —
wherever you're most vulnerable, that's where the snare sits.
But the Psalmist says — God will **deliver** you from the trap!
Not after you walk into it.
Not after you're already caught.
Before the trap even springs,
God has already sent deliverance.
Some of you didn't even know there was a trap set for you last month.
You didn't know there was a setup waiting for you.
But something told you to go left instead of right.
Something told you to stay home that night.
Something told you not to answer that call.
That wasn't luck.
That wasn't coincidence.
That wasn't your intuition.
**That was an angel on assignment!**
Heaven was rerouting you.
Heaven was redirecting you.
Heaven was protecting you from a trap you never even saw.

## III. Covered by Feathers — The Tenderness of God's Protection
Now verse 4 takes us somewhere powerful.
It says:
_"He shall COVER you with His feathers,_
_and under His wings you shall take refuge."_
Now that's an interesting image.
God uses the picture of a mother bird.
When danger comes —
when the hawk is circling,
when the storm rolls in,
when the predator approaches —
the mother hen doesn't send her chicks away.
She doesn't tell them to figure it out.
She spreads her wings — and pulls them UNDER.
She covers them with her own body.
She takes the hit — so they don't have to.
And that's what God does for His children.
When the storm was raging over your life,
God spread His wings.
When the enemy came in like a flood,
God covered you with feathers.
And I know feathers don't sound like much.
Feathers sound fragile.
Feathers sound weak.
But the feathers of the Almighty
are stronger than the weapons of the enemy.
Because His truth — the verse says —
His truth shall be your shield and buckler.
A shield blocks what's in front.
A buckler protects what's close to the body.
So God is covering you from a distance AND up close.
He's blocking the arrows you can see
AND the ones you can't.
Some of you should be thanking God right now
for attacks you never even knew were coming.
You didn't feel the arrow
because it never reached you.
It wasn't because the enemy didn't shoot.
It's because God's angel caught it mid-flight.

## IV. A Thousand May Fall — But Not You
Now here's where it gets intense.
Verses 5 through 7 — listen to this:
_"You shall not be afraid of the terror by night,_
_nor of the arrow that flies by day,_
_nor of the pestilence that walks in darkness,_
_nor of the destruction that lays waste at noonday._
_A thousand may fall at your side,_
_and ten thousand at your right hand;_
_but it shall not come near you."_
Did you catch that?
A THOUSAND falling on one side.
TEN THOUSAND falling on the other.
And you — standing in the middle — untouched.
Now that doesn't make logical sense.
If a thousand are falling to the left
and ten thousand are falling to the right —
how are YOU still standing?
Because there's something on you that's not on everybody else.
There's a covering on you.
There's a hedge around you.
There's a hand holding you.
There's an angel — assigned to you — that will not let you fall.
The terror came at night — but you're still here.
The arrow flew by day — but you're still here.
The pestilence walked through the darkness — but you're still here.
Destruction showed up at noonday — **but you're still here!**
You should have been a statistic.
You should have been a casualty.
You should have been a headline.
But God said, "Not this one."
Not this family.
Not this marriage.
Not this ministry.
Not this child of Mine.
_"It shall not come near you."_
Oh, I hear God saying to somebody —
what's happening around you is not going to happen TO you!
The layoff hit your department — but your position was covered.
The sickness went through your house — but your body was kept.
The spirit of confusion hit your family — but your mind was preserved.
Because angels were on assignment!

## V. The Angel Mandate — Charge, Keep, Bear Up
Now let me take you to the heartbeat of this whole Psalm.
Verses 11 and 12.
This is the angel mandate.
This is the command from the throne room.
_"For He shall give His angels CHARGE over you,_
_to KEEP you in all your ways._
_In their hands they shall BEAR YOU UP,_
_lest you dash your foot against a stone."_
Three words. Don't miss them.
**Charge.**
**Keep.**
**Bear up.**
CHARGE means God gave them an order.
This isn't a suggestion.
This is a military commission.
God looked at the angelic host and said,
"I have an assignment for you. Go cover My child."
KEEP means to guard, to watch, to protect continuously.
Not just on Sabbath.
Not just in the sanctuary.
In ALL your ways.
When you're on the highway — kept.
When you're in the hospital — kept.
When you're walking through the valley — kept.
When you can't see the next step — **kept!**
BEAR UP means to carry.
When you're too weak to walk, the angel lifts you.
When you're too tired to stand, the angel holds you.
When the road gets rocky, the angel carries you over the stone.
You remember those seasons where you don't know how you made it?
You don't know how you got out of bed.
You don't know how you paid that bill.
You don't know how you held it together.
You were being carried!
Angelic hands were beneath you.
Angelic strength was sustaining you.
Angelic power was bearing you up
when your own legs were giving out.
And you thought it was your own strength.
No, baby.
That was an angel — on assignment — with YOUR name on the order.

## VI. Open Your Eyes — The Army Is Already There
Now I need to take you somewhere else for just a moment.
Because this Psalm doesn't stand alone.
Turn with me in your mind's eye to 2 Kings chapter 6.
The prophet Elisha is surrounded by the enemy's army.
Horses and chariots everywhere.
The servant wakes up early, walks outside,
and sees the army surrounding the city.
And he panics.
He says, _"Oh, my master, what are we to do?"_
Have you ever woken up and seen the army?
Have you ever opened your eyes and the bills were surrounding you?
The diagnosis was surrounding you?
The opposition was surrounding you?
And you asked God — _"What are we going to do?"_
But Elisha wasn't shaken.
He looked at his servant and said —
_"Do not fear, for those who are with us_
_are MORE than those who are with them."_
And then Elisha prayed the most powerful prayer:
_"LORD, open his eyes that he may SEE."_
And when God opened that young man's eyes —
he saw the mountain FULL of horses and chariots of FIRE
surrounding Elisha.
The angels were ALREADY there!
Before the enemy arrived — the angels were ALREADY there!
Before the servant panicked — the angels were ALREADY there!
Before the prayer went up — heaven had ALREADY come down!
And I'm telling somebody in this room —
if God would open your spiritual eyes right now,
you would see that you are not outnumbered.
You are not outmatched.
You are not overpowered.
The army of heaven has you surrounded!
The enemy thought he had you surrounded —
but the ENEMY is the one who's surrounded!
Oh, I feel the Holy Spirit in this place!
Your situation looks like you're outnumbered.
Your finances look like you're outnumbered.
Your health report looks like you're outnumbered.
But if you could see in the Spirit —
you'd realize the angels of God have ALREADY been dispatched.
**They're ALREADY at your house.**
**They're ALREADY at your job.**
**They're ALREADY in your hospital room.**
**They're ALREADY standing at the door the enemy planned to walk through.**
Because they were sent BEFORE the battle started.
God didn't wait for the fight.
He sent the backup in advance.

## VII. You Shall Tread — The Authority of the Covered
Now look at verse 13.
This is where the Psalm shifts from protection to authority.
_"You shall tread upon the lion and the cobra,_
_the young lion and the serpent you shall trample underfoot."_
This is no longer just God covering you.
This is God giving you the power to walk ON TOP of the attack.
The lion represents strength — you'll walk over it.
The cobra represents cunning — you'll walk over it.
The young lion represents emerging threats — you'll walk over it.
The serpent represents ancient evil — you'll walk over it.
You're not just surviving.
You're not just enduring.
You are TREADING on the very thing that tried to take you out!
The depression tried to swallow you —
now you're walking on top of it.
The addiction tried to chain you —
now you're walking on top of it.
The betrayal tried to bury you —
now you're walking on top of it.
Because when God assigns an angel to your life,
you don't just escape the attack —
**you walk in authority OVER the attack!**
You're not a victim anymore.
You're a victor.
You're not running FROM the enemy.
The enemy is running FROM you.
Because there's an angel on your right.
There's an angel on your left.
There's a fire behind you.
And the Spirit of the Living God is going before you.
What can man do to you?
What can sickness do to you?
What can the economy do to you?
What can the enemy do to you —
**when God has dispatched angels to your assignment?**
* * *
## VIII. God Speaks — Because You Set Your Love on Me
Now I need you to hear this last portion.
Because the Psalm ends with God Himself speaking.
Verses 14 through 16 — this is God talking:
_"Because he has set his love upon Me, therefore I will deliver him."_
Did you hear the condition?
**"Because he has set his love upon Me."**
Not because you're perfect.
Not because you never fail.
Not because you have it all together.
Because you LOVE Him.
Even in your mess — you loved Him.
Even in your confusion — you loved Him.
Even when you couldn't see the way — you loved Him.
Even when the tears wouldn't stop — you loved Him.
And because you loved Him — He assigned angels to you.
_"I will set him on high, because he has known My name."_
You know His name.
You know He's Jehovah Jireh — your Provider.
You know He's Jehovah Rapha — your Healer.
You know He's Jehovah Shammah — the God who is THERE.
And because you know His name,
He's setting you on HIGH.
Above the attack.
Above the accusation.
Above the anxiety.
Above the enemy's reach.
_"He shall call upon Me, and I will ANSWER him."_
When you call — God answers.
And when God answers — He doesn't come alone.
He brings an army.
He brings angels.
He brings breakthrough.
He brings healing.
He brings restoration.
He brings every single thing you've been praying for!
_"I will be with him in trouble."_
That means God doesn't always remove the trouble.
But He promises to be IN IT with you.
And if God is in your trouble with you —
then the trouble has a problem.
Because now the trouble has to deal with the God
who commands the angel armies of heaven!
_"I will deliver him and HONOR him."_
The same situation that was meant to embarrass you —
God is going to use it to HONOR you.
The same battle that was meant to break you —
God is going to use it to PROMOTE you.
_"With long life I will satisfy him,_
_and show him My salvation."_
Long life!
Not a shortened life.
Not a cut-off life.
**Long life — full of God's salvation!**
* * *
## The Close — Angels on Assignment! (Whooping Celebration)
So let me close like this, church.
I need every person in this room to hear me.
I need every person watching online to hear me.
You have not been walking alone.
I know it felt like it.
Oh, I know — it felt like it.
I know the nights were long.
I know the silence was heavy.
I know the waiting felt endless.
I know the pain felt unbearable.
But the whole time — the WHOLE time —
**God had angels on assignment.**
When you were crying on the bathroom floor —
there was an angel in that room.
When you were sitting in that hospital waiting for the results —
there was an angel in that room.
When you were driving and the tears blurred your vision —
there was an angel in that car.
When you almost gave up —
an angel grabbed your hand and said, _"Not yet."_
Oh, I feel this thing rising!
You thought the enemy had the final word!
But God had ANGELS!
You thought the diagnosis was the verdict!
But God had ANGELS!
You thought the bankruptcy was the end!
But God had ANGELS!
You thought the betrayal would destroy you!
But God had ANGELS!
_Angels on the highway protecting you!_
_Angels in the hospital sustaining you!_
_Angels in the midnight hour comforting you!_
_Angels at the point of giving up — lifting you!_
Oh, a thousand fell at your side!
But you're STILL HERE!
Ten thousand fell at your right hand!
But you're STILL HERE!
The arrow flew by day!
But you're STILL HERE!
The terror came by night!
But you're STILL HERE!
Because God — my God — YOUR GOD —
the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob —
the Ancient of Days —
the Alpha and the Omega —
the One who sits on the throne —
looked down from glory!
And He saw your name!
And He saw your struggle!
And He saw the enemy's plan!
And He opened His mouth — in the courts of heaven —
and He said to the angel —
_"Go."_
_"Go cover My child."_
_"Go guard My child."_
_"Go carry My child."_
_"Go fight for My child."_
_"Go stand in the gap for My child."_
And the angel left the throne room!
And the angel came through the atmosphere!
And the angel broke through every demonic barrier!
And the angel showed up — right on time!
Not a minute late!
Not a second behind!
Right — on — time!
Because your God doesn't send backup AFTER the battle!
He sends it BEFORE the battle even starts!
Oh, I want you to shout in this place!
Not because everything is perfect —
but because you're STILL HERE!
You're still breathing!
You're still believing!
You're still worshiping!
You're still standing!
The devil meant to take you out —
but **ANGELS WERE ON ASSIGNMENT!**
And if God did it before — He'll do it AGAIN!
And if He assigned angels THEN — He's assigning them NOW!
Right now — even as you hear this Word —
heaven is dispatching fresh backup to your situation.
Fresh angels to your family.
Fresh angels to your finances.
Fresh angels to your health.
Fresh angels to your ministry.
Fresh angels to every impossible thing you're facing.
Because He who dwells in the secret place —
SHALL abide under the shadow of the Almighty.
And HIS ANGELS —
have been given CHARGE over you.
To KEEP you.
To BEAR you up.
To COVER you.
In ALL — your — ways.
**You are NOT alone.**
**You have NEVER been alone.**
**And you will NEVER be alone again.**
Because your God has angels —
and they are ON ASSIGNMENT!
* * *
### **Final Declaration:**
_Say it with me, church:_
**"I am covered. I am kept. I am carried. Angels are on assignment over my life — and I will NOT be moved!"**
_To God be the glory. Amen._
