A young man grew up on a farm. He worked hard every day. He milked cows, fixed fences, and did chores from morning until night. One day, someone asked him, “Why do you work so hard here?” He said, “I have to. If I don’t do my work, I might lose my place here.” The man looked at him and said, “Lose your place? This is your father’s farm. You are his son.” But the young man still lived like a hired servant, not like a son.

Bible Study Lesson: Are You Living as a Slave or a Son?

Text: Galatians 4:21–31 (KJV)

Opening Illustration (5 minutes)

Story:
A young man grew up on a farm. He worked hard every day. He milked cows, fixed fences, and did chores from morning until night.
One day, someone asked him, “Why do you work so hard here?”
He said, “I have to. If I don’t do my work, I might lose my place here.”
The man looked at him and said, “Lose your place? This is your father’s farm. You are his son.”
But the young man still lived like a hired servant, not like a son.

Ask the Group

What is the difference between a hired worker and a son?
Do you think the son understood who he really was?

Bridge to the Lesson

Many people live the same way with God. They try to earn their place… instead of resting in what God has already given.

Read the Passage

Galatians 4:21–23 “Tell me, ye that desire to be under the law, do ye not hear the law? For it is written, that Abraham had two sons…”

1. Two Births: Flesh or Promise (15 minutes)

Read Together

Galatians 4:22–23 “…he who was of the bondwoman was born after the flesh; but he of the freewoman was by promise.”

Teach

Ishmael → human effort
Isaac → God’s promise
Abraham tried to solve the problem himself. God fulfilled it His way.

Key Truth

You can try to work for what God promised, or trust Him to do it.

Supporting Scripture

Genesis 16:2 “…go in unto my maid…”
Genesis 21:1–2 “And the Lord visited Sarah as he had said…”
Romans 9:8 “…the children of the promise are counted for the seed.”

Discussion

Why is it hard to wait on God?
How do people today try to “help God out”?
What does trusting God’s promise look like in real life?

Heart Question

Am I trusting Jesus, or trying to earn it?

2. Two Ways: Bondage or Freedom (15 minutes)

Read Together

Galatians 4:24–26 “…the one from the mount Sinai, which gendereth to bondage… But Jerusalem which is above is free…”

Teach

Law → do more → bondage
Grace → Christ finished it → freedom

Supporting Scripture

John 8:36 “If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.”
Romans 6:14 “…ye are not under the law, but under grace.”
Galatians 5:1 “Stand fast… in the liberty…”

Discussion

Why can rules never give true freedom?
What kind of freedom does Jesus give?
Is it possible to look right on the outside but feel bound inside?

Real-Life Question

Do I feel accepted by God, or do I feel like I must prove myself?

3. Two Families: Slave or Son (15 minutes)

Read Together

Galatians 4:28–31 “…we… are the children of promise… we are not children of the bondwoman, but of the free.”

Teach

You cannot be both.
Slave → works for a place
Son → already belongs

Supporting Scripture

John 1:12 “…gave he power to become the sons of God…”
Romans 8:15 “…not received the spirit of bondage… but… adoption…”
Galatians 2:16 “…not justified by the works of the law…”

Teach Clearly

“Cast out the bondwoman” means: Let go of trusting yourself. Trust Christ alone.

Discussion

What is the difference between serving God as a slave vs a son?
Why can’t grace and works be mixed?
What old thinking do we need to let go of?

Heart Question

Am I living like I belong to God, or like I must earn it?

Closing (5 minutes)

Bring Back the Story

Ask:
Was the young man working like a son… or like a servant?
Do we sometimes live the same way with God?

Final Scripture

Galatians 4:31 “So then, brethren, we are not children of the bondwoman, but of the free.”

Final Thought

You are not a hired worker trying to stay. If you are in Christ, you are a son who already belongs.

Closing Prayer (optional)

Lord, help us to stop striving. Help us to trust what Jesus has already done. Teach us to live as Your children, not as slaves. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
If you want, I can also give you a second illustration you can use halfway through if the group gets quiet or needs re-engaging.
