In Baton Rouge, we know what it means to grind. We see it in the plants at 5:00 AM; we see it in the entrepreneurs on Plank Road; we see it in the mothers raising three kids on one income.
The Problem: The world tells us the "grind" is about "getting yours," "climbing the ladder," and "hustling until you hate yourself." It’s driven by greed or the fear of not having enough.

Your work is your worship. We don't just work for a paycheck; we work for His Presence.

In the Kingdom, the grind isn't about your name; it’s about His name.

Remember The Mandate

Colossians 3:23 ESV
23 Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men,

"Whatever you do, work heartily..."

heartily = “from the soul”

The Breakdown: The Greek phrase here is ek psyches, which literally means "from the soul." Paul isn't talking about "quiet quitting" or doing just enough to not get fired. He’s calling for a soulful, vigorous effort.

God is not honored by mediocrity.

If you are a Christian mechanic, there shouldn't be any bolts left over. If you are a Christian teacher, your lesson plans should reflect the excellence of the Creator.
The Application: To our Gen Xers in management and our Millennials in the gig economy: Your "grind" is the first Bible some people will ever read. Excellence is the best advertisement for the Gospel.

Remember The Master

Colossians 3:23 ESV
23 Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men,

"...as for the Lord and not for men..."

Look beyond people.

We must seek the command of God and the glory of God in all we do.

When Jesus is your "Boss," your attitude isn't dictated by your environment; it's dictated by your Allegiance.

Remember The Motivation

Colossians 3:24 ESV
24 knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ.

"...knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ."

Earthly bosses give bonuses; God gives an inheritance.

Earthly "grinds" lead to burnout; God’s "grind" leads to a crown.

Dr. Frederick D. Haynes often speaks about how our work should impact the community. When we grind for God’s glory, we aren't just building our bank accounts; we are building a legacy that outlives us.

Don't let a "man-sized" paycheck diminish a "God-sized" effort.
