INTRO: “YOU DON’T NEED MORE INFORMATION”
Church… let me start here:
Most of us don’t struggle because we lack information.
We struggle because when pressure hits… we don’t know how to walk with God in it.
You know Scripture
You’ve heard sermons
You believe in God
But then the trial comes:
Stress hits your home
Pressure hits your mind
Uncertainty hits your future
And suddenly you’re asking:
“God… what do I do now?”
That’s exactly where James goes.
READ TEXT
James 1:5–9 ESV
5 If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him. 6 But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind. 7 For that person must not suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; 8 he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.

1. YOU DON’T NEED ANSWERS, YOU NEED WISDOM

“If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God…”

James assumes something:
You are going to lack wisdom in trials.
Not strength. Not effort. Wisdom.
What is wisdom?
Biblically, wisdom is not:
IQ
Knowledge
Having all the facts
Wisdom is:
Knowing how to live rightly in a situation you don’t fully understand.
Bring it home:
Some of you right now:
You don’t know what to do in your marriage
You don’t know what to do with your kids
You don’t know what to do with your health
You don’t know what God is doing in your life
And your instinct is:
Google it
Ask everyone
Stress about it
Try to control it
James says:
“Stop. Ask God.”
Truth:
God is not stingy.
“Who gives generously to all without reproach…”
That means:
He’s not annoyed with your questions
He’s not rolling His eyes at your struggle
He’s not saying, “You should know this by now”
He gives freely.
LANDING:
“God is not the problem in your confusion—He is the answer.”

2. THE PROBLEM IS NOT ASKING… IT’S DOUBTING

“But let him ask in faith, with no doubting…”

Here’s where it tightens.
Most people do ask God.
But they don’t actually trust Him.
What does “doubting” mean?
This is not:
Having questions
Feeling uncertain
Wrestling internally
This is:
A divided trust
Greek Insight:

dipsychos (δίψυχος) = “double-minded”

Literally: two-souled
One part trusts God
One part trusts self
One part leans on truth
One part leans on fear
Real talk:
This looks like:
“God, I trust You… but I’m still going to control everything”
“God, I believe… but I’m preparing for worst-case because I don’t think You’ll come through”
“God, I asked You… but I already decided what I’m going to do”
That’s not faith.
That’s divided loyalty.
James’ image:
“Like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind…”
You ever watch the ocean in a storm?
No direction
No stability
Just reacting to whatever hits it
That’s a picture of a believer who:
Lives off emotions
Reacts to circumstances
Has no anchored trust in God
LANDING:
“If your trust is divided, your life will be unstable.”

3. DIVIDED TRUST PRODUCES UNSTABLE LIVING

“That person must not suppose that he will receive anything…”

That sounds harsh.
But James is being honest.
This doesn’t mean:
God refuses to love you God refuses to hear you
It means:
You’re not in a position to receive what God is giving
Why?
Because you’re:
Second-guessing everything
Resisting direction
Overriding obedience
Living in internal conflict
Verse 8:

“He is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.”

Not just spiritual life.
All his ways.
Marriage unstable
Emotions unstable
Decisions unstable
Faith unstable
This is the root issue:
Not your situation. Not your trial.
Your divided heart.
LANDING:
“An unstable life is not caused by hard circumstances—it’s caused by a divided trust.”

APPLICATION: HOW DO WE LIVE THIS?

Let’s get practical.

1. Ask God first—not last

Before:
calling someone
stressing out
making a move
Stop and ask:
“God, give me wisdom here.”

2. Decide who you trust

You cannot:
trust God
trust fear
trust your control
All at the same time.
Pick one.

3. Act on what God shows you

Faith is not:
just asking
just believing
It’s:

asking + trusting + obeying

CLOSING: “WHERE IS YOUR TRUST REALLY?”
Let me ask you straight:
When pressure hits your life…
Where do you run first?
What voice do you trust most?
What are you really leaning on?
Because that’s your god in that moment.
Some of you:
You believe in God
But you don’t trust Him
And James is calling you higher.
ALTAR CALL MOMENT
this morning…
This isn’t about:
trying harder
knowing more
It’s about:
Surrendering a divided heart
Call them forward (or respond where they are):
If that’s you:
You’ve been double-minded
You’ve been torn
You’ve been trying to trust God and control everything
 It’s time to choose.
Prayer:
“God, I’ve been divided. I’ve been trying to trust You and trust myself at the same time. Today I choose You.
Give me wisdom. Give me stability. Teach me to trust You fully.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
FINAL LINE TO LEAVE THEM WITH:
“God gives wisdom freely—but stability comes when you trust Him completely.”
