SERIES: From Useless to Useful

Series Theme: The Gospel transforms people from empty profession and broken identity into useful lives marked by love, reconciliation, and partnership in Christ.
Series Big Idea: The Gospel transforms people—changing identity, restoring relationships, and producing lives that are useful for God’s purposes.

Series Thread (repeat every week): The Gospel takes what is useless and makes it useful—for Christ, His people, and His mission.

Series One-Liner: The Gospel doesn’t make you better—it makes you new. And what’s new becomes useful.

Preaching Aim: Establish the Gospel framework for the entire series. Set the expectation that everything must be interpreted through grace and shared identity.
================================

OPENING: “If your life isn’t built on grace (of the Gospel), it will collapse the moment pressure shows up.”

Story
A man builds a shed in his backyard. <> Looks great. Straight lines. Clean cuts. Solid roof.
But he skips something—no real foundation. Just sets it on leveled dirt.
For a while, it works. <> Sunny days… calm weather… no issues.
Then a storm rolls in. <> Wind pushes. Rain saturates the ground. The soil shifts.
And overnight, what looked solid starts leaning… then cracking… then collapsing.
Not because the structure was terrible—but because the foundation was wrong.
That’s exactly how most people live. Things look stable—until pressure exposes what everything is built on.

INTRO

Philemon is not just a personal letter—it’s a Gospel situation inside a real house, with real people, and real tension coming.

Paul starts Philemon the proper way: Before he deals with the issue… he establishes the foundation—foundation of grace.
Before Paul ever addresses the issue, he establishes the environment: grace, peace, shared identity.
He’s not easing in—he’s setting the terms.

The terms I want to set for us today:

BIG IDEA: The Gospel establishes a new foundation before it ever demands a new outcome.

TEXT: Philemon 1–3

Philemon 1–3 Paul, a prisoner for Christ Jesus, and Timothy our brother, To Philemon our beloved fellow worker and Apphia our sister and Archippus our fellow soldier, and the church in your house: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

The Gospel creates a new identity (v. 1)

“Prisoner for Christ Jesus” — identity shaped by Christ, not circumstance
Philemon is not just a man—he’s a brother and fellow worker

Identity in Christ

2 Corinthians 5:17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.

What does it mean to be “new”?
“Understanding your identity in Christ is absolutely essential for your success at living a victorious Christian life.” -N.T. Anderson

If Christ hasn’t redefined you, you’re still living out of the wrong identity.

Identity Crisis

What it is…

Satan’s Lies

You are a sinner because you sin.
Your identity comes from what you have done.
Your identity comes from what people say about you.
Your behavior tells you what to believe about yourself.

God’s Truth

You are a saint (one declared righteous by God) who sins.
Your identity comes from what God has done for you.
Your identity comes from what God says about you.
Your belief about yourself determines your behavior

Romans 6:4 We were buried therefore with Him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life.

New life ➡️ new family…

The Gospel creates a new family (vv. 1–2)

Apphia, Archippus, the church in the house
This is not private Christianity—it’s shared life

Church is family, not an organization

Ekklesia…
Local vs. Universal…
Where living allelon takes place…

Push: The Gospel doesn’t just save individuals—it builds a people.

Ephesians 2:19–21 So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone, in whom the whole structure, being joined together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord.

The Gospel establishes a new atmosphere (v. 3)

Atmosphere (spiritual): the prevailing, lived environment of the soul—the unseen but real conditions in which a person thinks, responds, and exists before God.
The atmosphere of the Christian life is not the absence of trouble, but the constant reality of grace received and peace sustained in Christ—regardless of external circumstances.

Romans 5:1–2 Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. Through Him we have also obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in hope of the glory of God.

Hebrews 4:16 Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

Grace and peace are not greetings—they are realities
Everything that follows must operate under this authority

Push: If grace doesn’t define the house, the house will fracture under pressure.

CLOSING

Bring them back to the shed.
You can build something that looks solid… You can get the angles right… You can make it impressive from a distance…
But if it’s sitting on the wrong foundation, it’s just waiting for pressure to expose it.
Some of you—everything looks fine right now. But it’s built on performance… control… image… effort.
And it’s holding… for now.
But pressure is coming. It always does.
And when it hits—what you’re built on will determine whether you stand… or collapse.

Paul doesn’t start with behavior. He doesn’t start with the conflict. He starts with grace.

Because grace is the only foundation that holds when life shifts underneath you.

Final Push

So here’s the question: What is your life actually sitting on?

Because if it’s not built on the grace of God in Christ—it’s not stable… it’s temporary.

Gospel Landing

The Gospel isn’t God helping you reinforce your structure—it’s God giving you a new foundation altogether.

Christ didn’t come to patch your life. He came to become what you stand on.

Closing Line

Build your life on grace now… or watch it collapse later.
