Did you forget? Wait, I know y’all didn't forget? Did you? Because we all forget sometimes. Sometimes we forget big things. Dates, names, events. Sometimes we forget small things. Details, buttons, where we left the keys. We have the tendency to forget. And being forgotten can be painful. (Preach about forgetting and being glad that God doesn’t forget)
Church not only am I glad that God doesn’t forget about us or forgets like us. I’m thankful to God that when we forget God by his Grace reminds us of the things we have forgotten. God has a way of reminding us. (Preach)
This is where we find the disciples.
1. He reminds them of their Purpose (1-5)
1. He reminds them of their Purpose (1-5)
Each one of us has a purpose for living. We all have been given a purpose by God to do and/or accomplish while on this earth. Sometimes our purpose changes as we progress in life. At one point God may call you to do one thing, then after you have done that then God will move you from this to that. But, it would seem, as it is with every person in the bible, that as long as you are drawing breath that God has use for you still. Even if it’s as simple as praising his Name. The disciples had a purpose. He had changed them from fishermen to fishers of men. So when faced with a hard time of uncertainty they went back to what was familiar. Now commentators are divided on whether or not they were lacking in their faith, or if they were just passing time, or just just working to eat. Now, let me say nothing impeded progress like moving backwards. You may at best get to remain where you are (hello football fans aka forward progress), but you will never move ahead while moving backward. So, if in your life you can’t seem to get ahead, and nothing seems to be changing. Maybe you might need to spend more time facing the windshield instead of the rear-view. Stop trying to do what’s familiar and do what you are called to do.
Peter! What are yall doing? You are supposed to be fishing for men.
2. He reminds them of His Power (v.6-8)
2. He reminds them of His Power (v.6-8)
Cast the net on the right side. It is something that Jesus knows better than we do. He knows where we out to cast our net to gain success. What is more important here, is that Jesus shows them that they are still incapable of fruitful lives without God’s power. The disciples are vets at this. This is isn’t their first rodeo, they know how to fish. That’s why the went at night because in that region the best catch is at night. So when someone tells them to cast your net again it may have been offensive. They have been working all night and nothing. They have casts and pulled, but nothing. They have went to the deep water and caught nothing. They tried shallow water and caught nothing. Nothing worked, but here comes Jesus and tells them the fish are right where you are if you trust met. (preach)
Then Peter finds out it is Jesus and now he’s fully reminded of God’s power because what he does next is important for Peter. It’s a huge step in the right direction of faith. He jumps into the water. (Preach)
3. He reiterates His Providence (v.9-11)
3. He reiterates His Providence (v.9-11)
When Peter gets to the water. Jesus already has breakfast on the grill.
While you’re trying to figure it out, he already worked it out.
4. He reassures them of His Presence (v.12-14)
4. He reassures them of His Presence (v.12-14)
He sits with them and has breakfast.
