If you are new to Family Church, we are SO happy you are here today!
Today, we continue our series on the Holy Spirit and all the incredible ways he gifts us today.
Over the last two weekswe looked at a passage from the Bible that talks about the “Fruit of the Holy Spirit.”
Or ways we can see the Holy Spirit working through people.
Today, we will begin to dive into some different gifts the Holy Spirit gives us.
Today, we will talk about what is known in the Bible as the Charismatic Gifts.
And if you grew up in a Pentecostal church, you know exactly what I am talking about.
If you grew up in a Reformed, Baptist, or Catholic church, you might be getting a little nervous right now…
If you grew up outside the church…you have no idea…so you're good.
This is going to be a fun study for a lot of us.
And it will take us a few weeks to dive into all of these gifts.
After we finish with these gifts, we will examine the motivational or grace gifts of the Holy Spirit.
That is from Romans 12, if you want to read ahead.

Church…
Christianity was never meant to be a theory.
It was never meant to be just a book you studied one day a week.
Or a book that sits on your shelf 6 days a week.
Or some religious routine you do.
Christianity…
Since Jesus launched it was meant to be experienced.
From Genesis, the first book in the Bible.
To Revelation, the last book in the Bible.
God spoke, acted, and interceded in life.
Church, when Jesus died.
Rose from the dead.
And then ascended back into heaven.
God didn’t eject from our lives.
Before Jesus went back to heaven he said he was going to send His Spirit, God’s Spirit, to fill His followers.
That happened in Acts 2.
Then God started to multiply His movement through His people.
PAUSE
And today, we are going to dive into a different letter the Apostle Paul wrote to a small, chaotic church in a place called Corinth.
A place in modern-day Israel.
Paul wrote a letter to this church, not to shut down spiritual gifts, but to put them in proper biblical order.
And to be honest…
I think there are a lot of churches today that could use a letter or a sermon like this today.
Because let’s be honest…
We live in an area where, in the church, there are really two groups.
Group 1 – Church people who know little to nothing about the Holy Spirit…
They treat the Holy Spirit like the weird step-uncle in the family.
Those churches and people avoid talking about the Holy Spirit.
They do not seek Him.
Because sometimes, when He shows up… crazy stuff happens!
Group 1 people and churches just talk about Jesus and God the Father and leave the Holy Spirit out of the conversation.
Maybe you are in the camp today…
And maybe your int that camp and do not even realize it.
ADD YOUR PERSONAL EXPERIENCE EXAMPLE
I would have been in this group for a long time.
Growing up I do not remember any sermons dedicated to learning about how the Holy Spirit would work in my life.
As an adult, the churches I attended talk down about churches that allowed the gifts of the Holy Spirit to be seen.
And so honestly, until I was in my late 20’s, I did not know the Holy Spirit at all.
PAUSE
Group 2 – These churches or church people make everything about the Holy Spirit.
Everything is about the Holy Spirit showing up.
Everything is about the Holy Spirit filling people, and if He does not clearly fill them, there is an issue.
Services are all centered around the Holy Spirit showing up that day.
People tend to do things like:
Stop the service, at any point, to speak words to the church.
People run around, jump, or dance because the Spirit fills them.
People fall when prayed for.
If the people do not do things to show the Holy Spirit is present there is a problem in these people or churches.
ADD YOUR PERSONAL EXPERIENCE EXAMPLE
Let me again share my personal experience here.
I remember the first time I went to a Pentecostal church.
And I was a church kid.
I was always in church growing up.
The first time I went to a Pentecostal church, I had no idea what was going on.
During worship, people started running around.
People moved into the aisles of the church and started dancing.
When it came time to pray.
People started shouting out things in some languages I did not know.
And it was just not what I was used to at any church I had been to.
PAUSE
And to be clear, I am NOT saying any of those things are bad or wrong…
I am saying I was not used to it happening in church.
PAUSE
And here is the interesting thing church…
Paul, who wrote this book in the Bible.
He grew up in the Jewish way of doing things.
And when Paul came to believe in Jesus he took what he knew from his past and applied it to this new thing called the church.
And this letter is LITERALLY a letter he wrote to a church to clear up some of this debate that we still have today!
He sent this letter to clear things up.
And it is our hope that this series will help do that today as well.
PAUSE
Anyone nervous?
Anyone excited?

Let’s open our Bibles and see what God has for us today.
If you have your Bible with you —and I hope you do —open it to

We will start reading at verse 1.
1 Corinthians 12: 1-11 Now about the gifts of the Spirit, brothers and sisters, I do not want you to be uninformed.
Which is literally why we have been in this series!!!
Because there are a lot of us in that camp!
There are a lot of uniformed people in the church about the role of the Holy Spirit.
I was for years!
We are doing this series because, like Paul, I want you to be informed about the gifts of the Spirit.
Verse 2:
2 You know that when you were pagans, somehow or other you were influenced and led astray to mute idols.
3 Therefore I want you to know that no one who is speaking by the Spirit of God says, “Jesus be cursed,” and no one can say, “Jesus is Lord,” except by the Holy Spirit.
4 There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes them.
Remember before Easter…
Different gifts like Apostles.
Prophets.
Evangelists
Shepards.
Teachers.
Hopefully, you remember those teachings.
And if you are new and missed those teachings, go to our website and look back at this series before Easter, and you can learn.
PAUSE
And you’re about to learn about a bunch of other giftings for the Holy Spirit.
Paul goes on to say:
5 There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord.
6 There are different kinds of working, but in all of them and in everyone it is the same God at work.
7 Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good.
Stop there…
Let me unpack what he just said.
Let’s start with that weird word we don't use very often.
Manifestation…
What does that mean?
What does it mean to manifest the Spirit of God?
Manifestation is defined as the embodiment of something else.
When something fills someone with something or someone.
Let me give some examples:
Exams can manifest anxiety in you.
Expressing gratitude can manifest a positive mindset in you.
Or let’s get crazy…
A demon can fill you and manifest crazy stuff in your life.
OR….
God’s Spirit can fill you and manifest GOOD stuff in your life.
Manifest means it will be visible and experienced.
PAUSE
Now look at verse 7 again…
Notice it says:
To EACH one.
Meaning we will all have gifts.
That will be manifested…in us by the Holy Spirit.
Meaning the gifts we will be giving it WILL be visible and experienced…
AND…not only that, but it will be for…
Look in your Bibles…
It will be for the COMMON good.
AKA NOT for your PERSONAL spotlight.
NOT so everyone sees how holy YOU are.
NOT so everyone sees how you're more connected to God than they are.
NOT to draw attention to you.
For the COMMON good…
For the good of OTHERS…
That is how Paul starts this letter to this church who have wandered astray in the gifts of the Spirit.
PAUSE
Now…
Let me give you some historical & Biblical context.
Corinth.
The city in which this church was.
Corinth was a spiritually charged town.
There were pagan temples all over the place.
You can go to Corinth today and see all kinds of remnants of these temples.
Our church takes early church tours…you should go on one…and you will stand on the mountain in this pictureand look down on that temple…
You can walk around Corinth and see the remnants of this town.
PAUSE
But the temples back then emphasized ecstatic experiences.
Crazy stuff…
Drugs to make you see crazy stuff… was normal.
Crazy sexual stuff…was normal.
People flailing all over the place… was normal.
People claiming to see visions… was normal.
People being “filled” by spirits and acting weird…was normal.
If you look it up…
Crazy stuff…inside a worship service was NORMAL.
PAUSE
And Paul is telling this young church.
Where all that stuff is NORMAL…
To simmer down….
Look at verse 2….
He says I know you were influenced by culture.
I know you were influenced by the way you worshiped in your past.
But…look at verse 2… it led astray.
Those OLD ways of worship were not of God.
Those OLD ways of worship were leading you away from God.
That is literally what Paul is saying.
PAUSE
Here is the point you are about to see…
Write this down…
Paul is trying to reclaim the spiritual power and roots of this…
Saying…
Write this down…
The gifts are not personality traits. They are moments where heaven breaks into earth.
(Repeat)
Which means you cannot control this.
You cannot determine when this happens.
PAUSE
And while what we are about to read MIGHT seem like a personality thing…
It is not.
It is a time when God’s Spirit gifts a person in a way OUTSIDE their ability to do something…
As verse 7 said…for the good of others…
For the common good.
PAUSE
Let’s read verse 7 again and then keep reading…
And then we will circle back.
Break it all down.
And apply it to our lives.
7 Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good.
8 To one there is given through the Spirit a message of wisdom, to another a message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit,
9 to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit,
10 to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues, and to still another the interpretation of tongues.
11 All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he distributes them to each one, just as he determines.
Stop there…
Here, Paul gives us three groupings of gifts the Holy Spirit gives us.
And let me give you those and then we will dive into one today.
The second group next week.
And the final group the week after.
First,
1. Revelation Gifts (verse 8) - Wisdom & Knowledge.
Second,
2. Power Gifts (verses 9 & 10) - Faith / Healings / Miracles
Third,
3. Vocal Gifts (verse 10) - Prophecy / Tongues / Interpretation
PAUSE
With our time left today, let’s dive into that first group.
Revelation Gifts (verse 8) - Wisdom / Knowledge / .
These gifts happen when God reveals to us something that we could not know naturally.
Let me define each of these and give you an example from the Bible for each.
PAUSE
A Word of Wisdom means…you will see this in your notes…
The gift of wisdom is an insight that applies God’s truth to a specific situation, revealing what to do or how to respond in a way that aligns with God’s purposes.
(Repeat)
Let me give you an example from the Bible.
An example of wisdom beyond our ability…
Word of Wisdom Example: 1 Kings 3:16-28 – Solomon’s Judgement
The story of Solomon’s judgment between two mothers.
Found in 1 Kings 3:16-28.
This narrative shows the power of godly insight and discernment.
According to the story, two women approached Solomon, each claiming to be the child's true mother.
They lived together and gave birth within a few days of each other.
In a heart-wrenching dispute, each woman insisted that the living child was her own.
In his wisdom, Solomon decided to test the true mother by proposing to divide the child into two, giving each woman half.
The woman who was the genuine mother immediately pleaded with Solomon to spare the child’s life and give him to the other woman.
She would rather see the child live with her rival than be harmed.
Through this remarkable display of wisdom, Solomon was able to discern the true mother’s love for her child.
He understood that a genuine mother would prioritize the child’s life and well-being over her own desires.
Solomon’s godly insight enabled him to make a just and compassionate decision, recognizing the woman who would protect and care for the child.
PAUSE
A Word of Knowledge means…you will see this in your notes…
The gift of knowledge is an understanding of facts, circumstances, or information that the speaker could not have known naturally.
(Repeat)
Let me give you an example from the Bible.
An example of knowledge beyond our ability…
Word of Knowledge Example: Genesis 41 – Joseph Interprets Pharaoh’s Dreams
In the book of Genesis, chapter 41, we find the remarkable story of Joseph.
Pharaoh, the ruler of Egypt, had two perplexing dreams that troubled him greatly.
Desperate for answers, Pharaoh sought the interpretation of his dreams.
Joseph, who had gained a reputation for his ability to interpret dreams, was summoned before Pharaoh.
God gave him insight to explain that Pharaoh’s dreams were a prophetic message from God.
The dreams foretold seven years of plenty, during which Egypt would experience abundant harvests, followed by seven years of severe famine that would ravage the land.
In his interpretation, Joseph not only revealed the meaning of Pharaoh’s dreams but also provided a wise plan to navigate the impending crisis.
He advised Pharaoh to appoint a wise and discerning administrator to oversee the collection and storage of grain during the years of plenty.
By doing so, Egypt would be prepared to endure the years of famine successfully.
Joseph enabled Pharaoh to save the lives of countless people, not only in Egypt but also in neighboring lands that would seek refuge from the famine.
It demonstrates that God grants insight and understanding to those who seek His guidance and trust in His providence.
Joseph’s story in Genesis 41 serves as a timeless reminder of the transformative influence of divine knowledge.
PAUSE
How could that play out in your life today?
Well…
You might just have this hunch that a coworker or classmate needs prayer.
You might be in a conversation with someone and suddenly know details they never told you.
That’s not intuition.
That’s the Spirit of God loving someone through you.
Or…
How many times have you listened to a sermon and the pastor was preaching, and you thought…
This message is for me!
Or…
How does the pastor know I need to hear this!
Or…
How does the pastor know that about me!!!!
It is NOT us…
It is the Holy Spirit speaking through us…give us wisdom, knowledge, and discernment…
PAUSE
Church…
These gifts are not trophies.
They are tools of love.
You don’t “turn them on”… you make yourself available.
PAUSE
Let’s wrap things up today with your life application.
.
If you are new or newer to Family Church, we LOVE to end our messages with something for you to talk about with someone else.
Something to help you apply the message to your life.
So here is this week’s Life Application…
Life Application: Spiritual gifts aren’t something we manufacture—they’re something we receive.
Paul tells us to eagerly desire them, which means we come hungry, humble, and open.
SLOW down this week. Get alone with God. Ask the Holy Spirit to pour His gifts into your life and trust that He gives generously to those who seek Him.
As a result of today’s message, I will….
Prayer:
Make sure to do a salvation call!
Offering:
Thank you all for being here today!
If you would like to continue your worship through giving, there are offering boxes by the doors as you exit, or behind me on the screens. You can also see other ways to give here at Family Church.
You can also place any connection cards you filled out in there.
Week #4 –
If you did not know, you can donate stocks, bonds, retirement minimum distributions, gains on investments, and so forth to avoid all the taxes on them!
If you want to do that email jodi@familychurch.app and she will help you!
Have a great week!!
