16 And someone came to Him and said, “Teacher, what good thing shall I do that I may obtain eternal life?”
17 And He said to him, “Why are you asking Me about what is good? There is only One who is good; but if you wish to enter into life, keep the commandments.”
18 Then he said to Him, “Which ones?” And Jesus said, “You shall not commit murder; You shall not commit adultery; You shall not steal; You shall not bear false witness;
19 Honor your father and mother; and You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”
20 The young man said to Him, “All these things I have kept; what am I still lacking?”
21 Jesus said to him, “If you wish to be complete, go and sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me.”
22 But when the young man heard this statement, he went away grieving; for he was one who owned much property.
This is not a money sermon and money is not the main issue at hand in this passage.
16 And someone came to Him and said, “Teacher, what good thing shall I do that I may obtain eternal life?”
He recognized that something was different and authentic about Jesus
That Jesus had something that he lacked.
Also note that he started out this conversation from a transactional view “what must I do to obtain eternal life”
Many a time we feel as though we can purchase the things of God.
17 And He said to him, “Why are you asking Me about what is good? There is only One who is good…
Jesus drew this young man’s vision back to God.
A “who do you say I am” moment
17 And He said to him, “Why are you asking Me about what is good? There is only One who is good; but if you wish to enter into life, keep the commandments.” 18 Then he said to Him, “Which ones?” And Jesus said, “You shall not commit murder; You shall not commit adultery; You shall not steal; You shall not bear false witness; 19 Honor your father and mother; and You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”
Matthew Poole a reformer from the 1600’s said this:
Matthew Poole’s Commentary on the Holy Bible, Volumes 1–3 (Chapter 19)
-Our Saviour’s design here was, not to show this young man by this answer the way by which it was possible that he or any other might come to heaven, but only to convince him of the errors of the Pharisaical doctrine.
-They would not own Christ to be God, nor to be come forth from God; they taught eternal life to be obtainable by the works of the law, and by a fulfilling of the law, according to that imperfect sense which they gave of it, of which we heard much.
The Law Will Never Save Us!
The Law exposes our sin to us so that we recognize our need for a saviour and our inability to obtain it ourselves.
Grace is what saves us—But we must surrender all that we have to take the free gift.
20 The young man said to Him, “All these things I have kept; what am I still lacking?”
The young man realizes that he is still lacking.
He has done all the right things, he has been a good boy
Yet it is not enough
21 Jesus said to him, “If you wish to be complete, go and sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; {and come, follow Me.}” 22 But when the young man heard this statement, he went away grieving; for he was one who owned much property.
Again this has little to do with his money
This has everything to do with the earthly things that keep us from following Jesus.
His love for the Temporal outweighed his love for Eternal
(Once a young man feel over-board on a boat trying to hang on to a fishing rod. His buddy tossed him a lifebuoy or lifesaver, but in order to be saved he had to let go of the fishing rod… but he drowned)
What Is Keeping Us from Following Jesus?
Jesus calls us to lay it all down and just follow Him
Are we like the man with the fishing rod?
