8 And let them make me a sanctuary; that I may dwell among them.
9 According to all that I shew thee, after the pattern of the tabernacle, and the pattern of all the instruments thereof, even so shall ye make it.
5 Who serve unto the example and shadow of heavenly things, as Moses was admonished of God when he was about to make the tabernacle: for, See, saith he, that thou make all things according to the pattern shewed to thee in the mount.
David in preparations for Solomon to build the tempe, said this…
19 All this, said David, the Lord made me understand in writing by his hand upon me, even all the works of this pattern.
Title: God’s Tabernacle: Jesus
Remember, there are 2 chapters on creation and 42 on the tabernacle!
It is a four - fold, prophetic picture: Salvation, Jesus, You and Prayer.
If you could look down in a birds - eye view you would see that the furniture was laid out in the shape of a cross.
VERTICAL - God’s Plan of SALVATION
Brazen Alter - Blood - Death - Repentance
Brazen Laver - Water - Burial - Baptism
Ark of the Covenant - Spirit - Resurrection - Holy Ghost
HORIZONTAL - God’s Plan for SANCTIFICATION
Golden Candlestick - Light - Light of the World - Witness
Altar of Incense - Incense - Intercessor - Prayer
Table of Showbread - Bread - Bread of Life - Word of God
Prayer is me talking to God…
Word is God talking to me…
Other types:
12 tribes camped in the shape of a cross
The brazen serpent, lifted in the desert was a type of the cross
Ps 22 David would write 1,000 years before the Romans even invent crucifixion about Jesus’ crucifixion! Even starting the Psalm 22 off with “My God, my God, why hast though forsaken me…”
The cross was alway the way to God!
This is why we can find it woven all throughout the OT and so clearly in the Tabernacle!
Then we come to the Gospels, each one writing about Jesus and painting us a picture of how we approach God.
Matthew:
writes to the Jews
says “…that it might be fulfilled” a lot
goal was to prove that Jesus was the messiah.
Mark:
writes to the Romans
presents Jesus as a servant on a mission
uses the word “straightway” a lot
Luke:
writes to the Greeks - in search of the perfect man
convincing the educated
he presents a very eloquent, ordered account of who Jesus is - perfect man and universal savior
BUT John… he writes some 30 years after all the rest of the apostles.
Deals reveals Jesus’ identity as the God who came to live in flesh
No parables
Very selective in the miracles he talks about - 6 miracles that only John writes about.
the account of water to wine, healing the nobleman’s son, paralyzed man at Bethesda, man born blind, Lazarus, 2nd miraculous catch of fish
and always pairs a miracle with a teaching
ie; raises Lazarus from the dead and teaches “I am the resurrection and the life”.
ie; heals blind man and teaches “I am the light of the world”.
BUT more than anything John reveals Jesus as the living embodiment of the Tabernacle!
John 1:14 “14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.”
Dwelt amon us: tent, encamp, occupy, reside or TABERNACLE!
The Word was made flesh and TABERNACLED among us!
John 2:19–21 “19 Jesus answered and said unto them, Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up. 20 Then said the Jews, Forty and six years was this temple in building, and wilt thou rear it up in three days? 21 But he spake of the temple of his body.”
Let’s look at the pattern:
Brazen Alter: sacrifice
John 1:29 “29 The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.”
OUTER COURT
Brazen Laver: washing
Chapter one - Jesus is baptized
Chapter two: Jesus turns water into wine
uses 6 large water pots used for ceremonial washing
Mikva (the tank or bath) Tevilah (te-vee-lah) is immerse = baptism
Jesus used water from the Mikva to turn into wine!
Chapter three: Nicodemus - You must be born of the WATER…
Chapter four: Meets a woman at a WELL…
Talks to her about LIVING WATER!
Chapter five: heals a man at the POOL OF BETHESDA
INNER COURT OR HOLY PLACE
Table of Showbread:
Chapter 6: Five loaves and two fishes
John 6:33–35 “33 For the bread of God is he which cometh down from heaven, and giveth life unto the world. 34 Then said they unto him, Lord, evermore give us this bread. 35 And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst.”
Jesus was the bread on the Table of Showbread!
Golden Candlestick:
Chapter eight:
John 8:12 “12 Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.”
Then heals a blind man!
Chapter nine: heals a blind man from birth
Teaches that he is the “light of the world”!
Alter of Incense: Incense is burned for the smell or odor.
At this alter in Moses’ Tabernacle the priest would wear a God-designed breastplate (Hoshen). On is was twelve gemstones representing the twelve tribes of Israel.
So the High Priest would bear or carry Isreal into the presence of God.
Or carry the people on his heart to God.
John portrays Jesus as the High Priest standing before the Alter of Incense.
Chapter 12:
John 12:3 “3 Then took Mary a pound of ointment of spikenard, very costly, and anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped his feet with her hair: and the house was filled with the odour of the ointment.”
The High Priest would now pray, interceding not only for that generation but for all generations!
John 17:9 “9 I pray for them: I pray not for the world, but for them which thou hast given me; for they are thine.”
John 17:20 “20 Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word;”
The Heavenly High Priest in interceding on behalf of those who would obey…
He is carrying the people on his heart to God!
Hebrews 7:25 “25 Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them.”
I know that there is only one more piece of furniture in the Tabernacle but there is a specific moment that we have to look at before we get to the Ark.
Between the Holy Place and the Most Holy Place was the Vail…
Separated a Holy God from sinful man.
One time a year, the high priest would carry the blood of the lamb through that curtain and sprinkle it on the Mercy Seat.
Mark 15:37–38 “37 And Jesus cried with a loud voice, and gave up the ghost. 38 And the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom.”
Hebrews 10:19–20 “19 Having therefore, brethren, boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus, 20 By a new and living way, which he hath consecrated for us, through the veil, that is to say, his flesh;”
Jesus was the Alter, Laver, Table, Candle, Incense and the Vail!
As the beat his flesh, ripped his body - that vail was ripped from top to bottom so that we may ALL boldly walk into the presence of a Holy God!
One more piece in the pattern that must be understood!
Most Holy Place:
In the Ark there were three things to remind Israel of God’s provision.
Law, Golden Pot of Manna, Aaron’s Rod that budded
BUT the most important part of that box was on top - Mercy Seat!
Jesus is dead and buried before we see that last piece of the Tabernacle.
John 20:11–12 “11 But Mary stood without at the sepulchre weeping: and as she wept, she stooped down, and looked into the sepulchre, 12 And seeth two angels in white sitting, the one at the head, and the other at the feet, where the body of Jesus had lain.”
There is only one place in scripture where this was ever described before - over the Ark of the Covenant!
Hebrews 9:8–12 “8 The Holy Ghost this signifying, that the way into the holiest of all was not yet made manifest, while as the first tabernacle was yet standing: 9 Which was a figure for the time then present, in which were offered both gifts and sacrifices, that could not make him that did the service perfect, as pertaining to the conscience; 10 Which stood only in meats and drinks, and divers washings, and carnal ordinances, imposed on them until the time of reformation. 11 But Christ being come an high priest of good things to come, by a greater and more perfect tabernacle, not made with hands, that is to say, not of this building; 12 Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us.”
HIS BLOOD IS ENOUGH!
We don’t have a box with God on it, we have a heart with God in it!
We have hand, a mouth, our lives that we continually offer as living sacrifices!
