“It shall come to pass in the latter days”
When are the latter days?
You’re living in them! Already not yet, partial preterism.
In this text we will read a prophecy that points us to Jesus Christ. Specifically, we will learn that Jesus will...
Jesus Will Turn Our Hearts To God
Jesus Will Bring True Justice and Peace
Jesus Will Bring Ultimate Rest
To all who trust him

Jesus Will Turn Our Hearts to God

Micah 4:1–2 “It shall come to pass in the latter days that the mountain of the house of the Lord shall be established as the highest of the mountains, and it shall be lifted up above the hills; and peoples shall flow to it, and many nations shall come, and say: “Come, let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, to the house of the God of Jacob, that he may teach us his ways and that we may walk in his paths.” For out of Zion shall go forth the law, and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem.”
At the time of the prophecy, the people of Israel had gone after other gods. “High Places” weren’t merely hills or mountains — they were also symbolic. To ascend a hill or mountain was to meet with God, and the people of Israel and Judah had begun ascending the other high places.
To the faithful, Micah prophesies their consolation. Though the time for judgement is coming when the Temple will be destroyed and the people cast out into pagan nations, that will only be temporary. The faithful who worship the Lord will be able to look forward to the time when the mountain of the House of the Lord will be established as the highest of the mountains. That is to say that The Lord will be properly glorified.
Not only will Israelites flow to the mountain of the Lord, but many nations will come and seek the voice of the Lord. We are told that the law (Torah) and the Word of the Lord will flow out from Jerusalem, and this will draw the nations in to come and worship.
Already

Woman, believe me, the hour is coming when neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem will you worship the Father. 22 You worship what you do not know; we worship what we know, for salvation is from the Jews. 23 But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship him. 24 God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.” 25 The woman said to him, “I know that Messiah is coming (he who is called Christ). When he comes, he will tell us all things.” 26 Jesus said to her, “I who speak to you am he.”

We are living proof that the prophesy has been fulfilled. We are the nations that come to worship the Lord in Spirit and Truth. We flow to the mountain of the Lord to encounter Jesus, the Word of God made flesh.

We are still being sanctified, but God will complete his work in us. We will be perfected, and every trace of sin will be removed.

Jesus Will Bring True Peace

Micah 4:3 “He shall judge between many peoples, and shall decide disputes for strong nations far away; and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks; nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war anymore;”
The Israelites were about to get a heavy taste of war. They will be besieged, defeated, enslaved, and exiled to a faraway land.
But for the faithful, here is the consolation that the day is coming when true peace will reign. Nations won’t fight against nations, but we will have true peace with one another.
Already

11 Therefore remember that at one time you Gentiles in the flesh, called “the uncircumcision” by what is called the circumcision, which is made in the flesh by hands— 12 remember that you were at that time separated from Christ, alienated from the commonwealth of Israel and strangers to the covenants of promise, having no hope and without God in the world. 13 But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ. 14 For he himself is our peace, who has made us both one and has broken down in his flesh the dividing wall of hostility 15 by abolishing the law of commandments expressed in ordinances, that he might create in himself one new man in place of the two, so making peace, 16 and might reconcile us both to God in one body through the cross, thereby killing the hostility.

17 And he came and preached peace to you who were far off and peace to those who were near. 18 For through him we both have access in one Spirit to the Father. 19 So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, 20 built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone, 21 in whom the whole structure, being joined together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord.

The church is the place that Jesus has established to fulfill this prophecy. We are not an ethnicity-bound church. There is no such thing as a black church or a white church, a Jewish church and a gentile church. There is not a church in America and a church in Africa. There is one church: the church of our Lord Jesus Christ, and in him there is no division between us.

9 After this I looked, and behold, a great multitude that no one could number, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed in white robes, with palm branches in their hands, 10 and crying out with a loud voice, “Salvation belongs to our God who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb!”

Jesus Will Bring Ultimate Rest

Micah 4:4 “but they shall sit every man under his vine and under his fig tree, and no one shall make them afraid, for the mouth of the Lord of hosts has spoken.”
The people in Israel lived in a time when rest was far from them. They had fear from without, constantly worrying about being enslaved by their enemies.
They also labored beneath the weight of the law, still being expressed in types, shadows, and ordinances.
But when Jesus Christ came, he brough with him true rest like Micah prophesied.
Already

Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”

Jesus invites us to lay down our burdens and trust him. There we will find rest for our souls.
And though we still have a spiritual enemy in the world, he also gives us rest from any fears concerning what he might to do us.

And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.

Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, bright as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb 2 through the middle of the street of the city; also, on either side of the river, the tree of life with its twelve kinds of fruit, yielding its fruit each month. The leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations. 3 No longer will there be anything accursed, but the throne of God and of the Lamb will be in it, and his servants will worship him. 4 They will see his face, and his name will be on their foreheads. 5 And night will be no more. They will need no light of lamp or sun, for the Lord God will be their light, and they will reign forever and ever.

To All who Trust in Him

Micah 4:5 “For all the peoples walk each in the name of its god, but we will walk in the name of the Lord our God forever and ever.”
These consolations are not for everyone.
If you hear in these prophesies the kinds of consolations that your soul longs for, then know that they are really and truly offered to you. But these consolations are only for those who repent and trust in Christ. These are the consolations of the faithful remnant that walk in the name of the Lord Our God forever and ever.
These are not promises for the self-righteous and perfect, nor are they promises for the impenitent and the faithless.
These are promises to any sinner who would repent and turn to Christ, placing their trust in him. To all who come to him, he will never cast out. Brothers and Sisters I implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God through faith in him.
