Story about
Shame can be debilitating, cause you to make bad choices, etc.
God can heal your shame!
Ephesians 1:15–18 KJV 1900
15 Wherefore I also, after I heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus, and love unto all the saints, 16 Cease not to give thanks for you, making mention of you in my prayers;
This is a prayer.
He prays here for 2 things:
Ephesians 1:15–18 KJV 1900
17 That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him:
Wisdom- Sophia- Understanding of what is, knowledge

4678. σοφία sŏphia, sof-ee´-ah; from 4680; wisdom (higher or lower, worldly or spiritual):— wisdom.

Revelation- Apocolypsis- Things that God is revealing to you now!

602. ἀποκάλυψις apŏkalupsis, ap-ok-al´-oop-sis; from 601; disclosure:— appearing, coming, lighten, manifestation, be revealed, revelation.

Ever believer can deal with shame by accepting 3 truths about God’s grace.

1. Remember your calling (v.18b)

Ephesians 1:15–18 KJV 1900
18 The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling,
Word for hope…

1680. ἐλπίς ĕlpis, el-pece´; from a primary ἔλπω ĕlpō (to anticipate, usually with pleasure); expectation (abstr. or concr.) or confidence:— faith, hope.

This hope is connected to calling.
Being “in Christ” is a calling that brings hope.
How do these things work together? Hope and Calling
This isn’t a hope that this works out kind of thing.
This is a hope that comes because your salvation is secure!
Your salvation is a present reality, and a future anticipated reality.
Already, not yet!
Why is this so important in regards to shame?
Shame tells us that we don’t belong.
Illustration- Club culture…
Paul was trying to tell them- they are already accepted. You already belong!
Shame says you don’t belong- embrace that you do.

2. Receive Your Inheritance. (v.18c)

Ephesians 1:18 KJV 1900
18 The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints,
2 Passages help us understand this concept:
Colossians 1:16 KJV 1900
16 For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him:
Christ is heir to all things.
“…by him, and for him.”
Romans 8:16–17 KJV 1900
16 The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God: 17 And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together.
Those who are the children of God are joint heirs with Christ!
Your rich!
We are rich in Christ! We have an inheritance.
Ephesians 3:8 KJV 1900
8 Unto me, who am less than the least of all saints, is this grace given, that I should preach among the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ;
Romans 11:33 KJV 1900
33 O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! how unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past finding out!
Shame would tell you that you have nothing.
Paul’s prayer is that you would know you have a treasure/inheritance in Christ.
Illustration: 2009
2 Brothers from Budapest who were abandoned, and only had the ability to scrap to survive. They were living in a cave.
People showed up to the cave telling them that they had a inheritance.
You are poised to inherit 7 billion dollars from their maternal grandmother.
They had believed they were abandoned. They were actually heirs to a billionaire, and were living in a cave and didn’t know it.
Since 2009 no one has done a follow up story. Did they ever leave the cave?
We don’t know if they left the cave. But you can!
Shame says you have nothing- enjoy what grace gives.

3. Rely on His power. (v.19-23)

Ephesians 1:19–23 KJV 1900
19 And what is the exceeding greatness of his power to us-ward who believe, according to the working of his mighty power, 20 Which he wrought in Christ, when he raised him from the dead, and set him at his own right hand in the heavenly places, 21 Far above all principality, and power, and might, and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this world, but also in that which is to come: 22 And hath put all things under his feet, and gave him to be the head over all things to the church, 23 Which is his body, the fulness of him that filleth all in all.
Romans 8:11 KJV 1900
11 But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you.
Verse 19- 4 Words for power
Power- dunamis- Potential power
working- energia- active power
mighty power- kratos

2479. ἰσχύς ischus, is-khoos´; from a der. of ἰς is (force; comp. ἔσχον ĕschŏn, a form of 2192); forcefulness (lit. or fig.):— ability, might ([-ily]), power, strength.

v. 20- Ascended power

Luke 10:17–20 KJV 1900
17 And the seventy returned again with joy, saying, Lord, even the devils are subject unto us through thy name. 18 And he said unto them, I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven. 19 Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you. 20 Notwithstanding in this rejoice not, that the spirits are subject unto you; but rather rejoice, because your names are written in heaven.

v. 21- An Absolute power

v. 22- An Authoritative Power

Psalm 8:6 KJV 1900
6 Thou madest him to have dominion over the works of thy hands; Thou hast put all things under his feet:
False Shame- Derives its standards outside of us.
True Shame- Can be helpful. Derives its standards from God’s expectations.
Godly sorrow, Worldly sorrow
In Christ, you don’t have to live under the banner or cloud of shame.
Are you in Christ?
Shame says you’re powerless- experience His power!
