Series: Homebound — Finding Your Way in a World of Chaos
Big Idea: There is no need to hold it together yourself when Christ has already provided everything you need to stand unafraid in this world of chaos.
INTRODUCTION

Every person here shares one thing in common — the experience of life coming apart faster than you can hold it together
The instinct to stabilize ourselves, to be our own anchor, is as old as the human condition — it did not work in the garden and it has not worked since
The upper room — eleven men facing the worst night of their lives
He sat down with steady hands and gave them everything they would need
Read John 14:25–27
25 These things have I spoken unto you, being yet present with you. 26 But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you. 27 Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.
Three provisions — a Guide, a Peace, a Command
Big Idea stated - There is no need to hold it together yourself when Christ has already provided everything you need to stand unafraid in this world of chaos.

The Question: Is the Holy Spirit an influence or a person?
An Influence
Impersonal and passive
Present but not responsive
Cannot know your name, your situation, your chaos
Think of the light filling this room
A Person
Shows up
Knows your name and understands your situation
Speaks, acts, advocates when you have no words left
Stays
John is so careful — though pneuma is neuter, he uses the masculine ἐκεῖνος — He is not an it, He is a He
What This Guide Does
Teaches everything Christ has spoken
Brings to remembrance at precisely the moment it is needed
Illuminates the fixed voice of Jesus so it can be heard above the noise
You are never navigating this world alone

The Contrast: The world's peace versus Christ's peace
The World's Peace
Circumstantial — holds only when conditions cooperate
Temporary — vanishes exactly when it is needed most
Every person here knows what it feels like when it evaporates
Christ's Peace
Not the author of confusion but of peace (1 Corinthians 14:33 “33 For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints.” )
A peace that surpasses comprehension — guards heart and mind (Philippians 4:7 “7 And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” )
Covenantal — holds precisely when conditions do not
Two Words — One Gift
leave — ἀφίημι — testamentary, last-will language, bequeathed at departure
I give — δίδωμι — active present bestowal, placed directly into their hands
He gives what He has — the peace sustaining Him in that room, hours from the cross
If it held there, it will hold anywhere — including your upper room

The Observation: This command appears twice in John 14
At verse 1 — the chapter opens with it - John 14:1 “1 Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me.”
At verse 27 — the chapter closes with it - John 14:27 “27 Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.”
Everything in between is His answer to the troubled heart
The heart does not settle easily even when it has been given every reason to
Two Distinct Words
Troubled — ταράσσω — passive voice — agitation done to the heart from without — the storm hits
Afraid — δειλιάω — active voice — hapax legomenon, appears only here in the NT — timidity, shrinking, retreating — the heart gives up
He addresses both the wound and the surrender
The Command Presupposes Capacity
Jesus does not command what cannot be obeyed
The provisions are the ground
The command is the call to stand on that ground rather than abandon it
The storm may not stop — but you do not have to go down with it
Big Idea restated - There is no need to hold it together yourself when Christ has already provided everything you need to stand unafraid in this world of chaos.
APPLICATION
APPLICATION
For the Believer
Everything He promised is already yours
Three diagnostic questions:
Are you listening to the Guide or finding your own way through the noise?
Are you living in the peace placed in your hands or reaching for the world's version?
Are you standing on what He has given or letting your heart retreat?
The command issued in that upper room is the same command He issues to you today
Stand on what He has given
For the Unbeliever
The world's peace keeps vanishing — the chaos keeps winning
What Jesus offers is not available through any other source
On the cross He could already see from that room — He secured everything the troubled and fearful heart needs
He offers it freely to every person who will come to Him
It begins with coming to Him
CONCLUSION
CONCLUSION
We have stood in the upper room and watched Him — steady hands — give everything the human heart needs
A Guide — not an influence — a person, permanently dispatched
A Peace — not the world's version — His own, born of His character, proven in the shadow of the cross
A Command — not a consolation — do not be agitated, do not retreat, stand
The provisions are in place — nothing left to add, nothing left to earn
He is the one in the room with steady hands
Big Idea — final declaration - There is no need to hold it together yourself when Christ has already provided everything you need to stand unafraid in this world of chaos.
That is the promise. It has already been kept. Stand on it.

Simple response — Christ's offer is not complicated
Does not require having it together — that is the whole point of the passage
Two groups in this room
GROUP 1 — The Believer Who Has Stopped Standing
You know Christ — maybe for years
But somewhere the chaos got loud and you stopped standing on what He gave you
The heart got agitated — the fear set in — and instead of standing, you retreated
Today is the day to stop — not tomorrow, not when circumstances change — now
The Guide is present
The peace is already in your hands
The only thing left is to stand on it
Right where you are — bow your head — tell Him
The Ask:
I am done reaching for what the world cannot provide
I am standing on what you have already given
GROUP 2 — The Unbeliever Who Is Tired of Carrying It Alone
You have been carrying the chaos on your own — and you are tired
The world has been promising peace and never delivering
What you heard today is not available through any other source
Not a strategy
Not better circumstances
Not trying harder
It flows only from a relationship with Him
He is offering it freely — not because you earned it — because He purchased it
Come

He is the one in the room with steady hands
And He has not moved
