When God Makes a Promise

INTRO – THE SPACE BETWEEN PROMISE AND PROOF

Let me start with this…

Have you ever been in that place where you know God said something…

…but your reality looks nothing like it?

Like—you prayed about it. You felt it clearly. You stepped out in obedience.

And now?

Nothing.

No movement. No clarity. No breakthrough.

Just… waiting.

Maybe for you it looked like:

A job you thought God opened… but it never came through

A relationship you believed was from Him… but it fell apart

A prayer you’ve been praying for years… and still no answer

And if you’re honest… you’ve started asking:

“God… did I hear You wrong?” “God… are You still going to do it?” “God… where are You?”

That space…

between promise… and proof…

That’s where Genesis 15 lives.

And if we’re honest…

That’s where a lot of us are living right now.

POINT 1 – GOD MEETS US IN OUR FEAR

Genesis 15:1 (ESV) “After these things the word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision: ‘Fear not, Abram, I am your shield; your reward shall be very great.’”

“After these things…”

After the battle. After the victory. After the obedience.

And what does God say first?

“Fear not.”

Which means…

Abram is afraid.

Now think about why.

Abram just:

Defeated multiple kings

Rescued Lot

Refused the king of Sodom’s wealth

From the outside? He looks like a warrior. From the inside? He’s wrestling.

Because now he’s got enemies. Now there’s risk. Now there’s uncertainty.

And on top of that…

He still doesn’t have the one thing God promised— a son.

So now it’s not just fear of enemies…

It’s fear that maybe… God’s promise isn’t coming.

Sometimes the scariest place to be… is right after you obey God.

Because obedience doesn’t eliminate fear…

It often exposes it.

And I love this…

God doesn’t rebuke Abram.

He reassures him.

“Fear not… I am your shield.”

God doesn’t just give protection…

He becomes it.

APPLICATION

Some of you are asking God to fix something around you…

And God is saying:

“I’m not just fixing your situation… I’m becoming your security.”

POINT 2 – FAITH TALKS BACK (HONESTLY)

Genesis 15:2–3 (ESV) “But Abram said, ‘O Lord God, what will you give me, for I continue childless…’”

Abram responds…

And it’s not polished.

It’s honest.

“God… I hear You… but I still don’t have what You promised.”

This is not rebellion.

This is relational honesty.

There is a difference between:

Doubting God

And wrestling with God

Abram isn’t walking away…

He’s leaning in.

APPLICATION

Some of you feel like you have to clean up your prayers before bringing them to God.

Like you’ve got to get the words right… get your emotions under control… figure it all out first… and then come to Him.

You don’t.

Abram didn’t.

He walked right into the presence of God with questions… with tension… with a promise that didn’t make sense anymore… and he said, “God… what are You doing?”

And God didn’t shut him down.

God leaned in.

God can handle:

Your confusion

Your disappointment

Your late-night thoughts that you don’t say out loud

Your “God, I thought You said…”

Some of you have been carrying things alone… not because God is distant… but because you’ve convinced yourself you can’t bring Him the real version of you.

But the truth is…

God isn’t waiting for a polished version of your prayer.

He’s inviting the honest one.

Real faith doesn’t pretend everything is fine…

Real faith says, “God, this doesn’t make sense… and I’m still coming to You anyway.”

Real faith brings everything to God.

POINT 3 – GOD REAFFIRMS, NOT RE-EXPLAINS

Genesis 15:4–5 (ESV) “And behold, the word of the Lord came to him… ‘This man shall not be your heir…’ And he brought him outside and said, ‘Look toward heaven… so shall your offspring be.’”

Notice what God doesn’t do.

He doesn’t give a timeline.

He doesn’t explain the process.

He doesn’t say, “Here’s how I’m going to do it.”

Instead…

He gives Abram a picture.

He takes him outside… into the night… into the very place that feels empty… and says:

“Look up.”

“Count the stars.”

“So shall your offspring be.”

Don’t miss this—God answers Abram’s question… but not the way Abram wants.

Abram wants clarity. God gives him a call to trust.

Abram wants a plan. God gives him a promise.

And this is where faith gets formed.

Because sometimes God strengthens your faith not by giving you details…

but by giving you something to hold onto when you don’t have details.

TEACH THIS DEEPER

Think about the moment.

Abram is standing in the dark…

No son. No evidence. No timeline.

Just… sky.

And God says:

“Look at what you can’t count… that’s what I’m going to do.”

God doesn’t shrink the promise to Abram’s understanding…

He expands Abram’s vision to match the promise.

And here’s the tension:

The stars don’t solve Abram’s problem.

They don’t put a child in his arms.

They don’t speed up the timeline.

But they anchor his faith.

God may not always give you an explanation…

but He will always give you something to stand on.

MODERN APPLICATION (MAKE IT REAL)

This is where we live.

Because we are wired to want:

Timelines (“When is this going to happen?”)

Details (“How is this going to work?”)

Control (“What do I need to do to make this happen?”)

And God often responds with:

“Trust Me.”

And if we’re honest…

That can feel frustrating.

Because we don’t just want a promise…

We want a plan.

GET PRACTICAL

Some of you are there right now:

You’re waiting on a breakthrough… and God hasn’t given you a date

You’re praying for direction… and God hasn’t given you the full map

You’re believing for change… and nothing looks different yet

And you keep asking:

“God, just show me how this is going to work.”

And God keeps bringing you back to:

“Do you trust what I said?”

SHIFT THE ROOM

Because faith is not built on having all the answers…

Faith is built on trusting the One who gave the promise.

And this is where a lot of us stall out.

We don’t walk away from God…

We just stop moving forward because we don’t have all the details.

PRACTICAL TAKEAWAYS

So what do you do when God doesn’t explain?

You go back to what He already said(His Word becomes your anchor, not your feelings)

You rehearse the promise more than the problem(Abram is told to look up, not look around)

You take the next step of obedience, not the whole plan(God leads step by step, not always all at once)

LAND THIS MOMENT

Abram is standing in the dark…

Looking up…

Surrounded by silence…

But filled with promise.

And some of you are in that exact place.

It feels quiet. It feels unclear. It feels like nothing is happening.

But just because God hasn’t explained it…

doesn’t mean He’s not working.

Just because you can’t see it yet…

doesn’t mean He’s not doing it.

You may be standing in darkness…

But that doesn’t mean you’re without promise.

POINT 4 – WHAT REAL BELIEF ACTUALLY IS

Genesis 15:6 (ESV) “And he believed the Lord, and he counted it to him as righteousness.”

This verse…

is everything.

If you miss this… you miss the gospel.

Abram didn’t earn righteousness.

He didn’t achieve it.

He didn’t perform for it.

He believed…

And God counted it.

That word “counted” means credited… assigned… placed into his account.

Abram didn’t become righteous because of what he did…

He was declared righteous because of what he believed.

SLOW THIS DOWN

Let this hit you:

God looks at a man who still has doubts… who just questioned Him… who doesn’t have it all figured out…

And says:

“Righteous.”

Not because Abram is perfect…

But because Abram is trusting.

DEFINE BELIEF (MAKE IT PERSONAL)

Belief is not:

Just agreeing God exists

Just knowing Bible facts

Just showing up to church

Just trying to be a good person

Belief is weight transfer.

It’s taking the full weight of your life…

Your sin… Your future… Your identity…

And placing it on what God said.

Here’s the line:

Abram didn’t just believe in God… he believed God.

There’s a difference.

A lot of people believe in God.

Very few actually believe God.

MAKE IT REAL

Believing in God says: “Yeah, I think He’s real.”

Believing God says: “If He said I’m forgiven… I’m forgiven.” “If He said I’m new… I’m new.” “If He said He’s with me… He’s with me.”

Even when I don’t feel it. Even when I don’t see it. Even when my life doesn’t line up with it yet.

WHERE THIS HITS TODAY

This is where people struggle.

Because we don’t mind God…

We just don’t fully trust Him.

So we do this weird mix:

We say we believe…

But then we:

Carry guilt He already paid for

Try to earn what He already gave

Define ourselves by our past instead of His promise

And what we’re really saying is:

“God… I hear You… but I don’t fully trust that it’s true for me.”

PASTORAL MOMENT

Some of you are still living like your sin defines you.

Still replaying it. Still carrying it. Still identifying with it.

But if you’ve trusted Christ…

God is not relating to you based on your past…

He’s relating to you based on Christ’s righteousness.

GOSPEL CLARITY

This is the beauty of the gospel.

You don’t work your way into righteousness.

You receive it.

You don’t clean yourself up to come to God.

You come to God… and He makes you clean.

PRACTICAL APPLICATION

So what does this look like Monday morning?

It looks like this:

When guilt shows up… you preach the promise over your feelings

When you feel like you’re not enough… you stand on what God said, not how you feel

When your past tries to define you… you remind yourself: “That’s not who I am anymore”

Because belief is not passive…

It’s something you live out daily.

LAND THIS MOMENT

Abram had no son.

No proof.

No timeline.

But he had a word from God.

And he said:

“That’s enough.”

And God said:

“Righteous.”

THEOLOGICAL NOTE

This is the foundation of justification by faith.

POINT 5 – DARKNESS BEFORE FULFILLMENT

Genesis 15:12 (ESV) “As the sun was going down, a deep sleep fell on Abram. And behold, dreadful and great darkness fell upon him.”

Don’t rush past this.

This is one of the most important emotional and theological moments in the entire chapter.

Before the covenant is fulfilled…

Darkness comes.

Not light.

Not clarity.

Not breakthrough.

Darkness.

SLOW THIS DOWN

Look at what happens to Abram.

A deep sleep falls on him.

He’s not active… he’s passive.

He’s not contributing… he’s being carried.

And then it says:

“Dreadful and great darkness fell upon him.”

This isn’t just nighttime.

This is weight.

This is heaviness.

This is the kind of darkness you feel in your chest… not just see with your eyes.

MAKE THE CONNECTION

This is the moment where everything feels uncertain.

Where the promise feels far away.

Where God feels quiet.

Where fear starts creeping back in.

And here’s what you need to see:

God is still in the story.

Even when Abram can’t see clearly… God is still moving.

LINE

Some of you think the darkness means God left…

But in Genesis 15…

the darkness is where God is working.

TEACH THIS DEEPER

This moment is not random.

It’s prophetic.

God is actually revealing what’s coming:

Abram’s descendants will go through slavery

There will be suffering before fulfillment

There will be waiting before breakthrough

And ultimately…

This points to the cross.

Because when Jesus was on the cross…

Darkness fell.

In the middle of the day.

Because God does some of His deepest work…

in the darkest moments.

MAKE IT PERSONAL

Some of you are in that darkness right now.

And I don’t mean metaphorically.

I mean:

You feel the weight of anxiety and don’t know why

You’re carrying something heavy and can’t shake it

You’re praying… but it feels like it’s hitting the ceiling

You’re showing up… but inside, you feel numb

And the lie you’re starting to believe is:

“God must not be here.”

“God must not be working.”

“God must have forgotten me.”

PASTORAL MOMENT

But Genesis 15 says the opposite.

The darkness didn’t mean God left Abram.

The darkness was the environment where God was about to move in the deepest way.

PRACTICAL APPLICATION

So what do you do when you’re in the dark?

You don’t interpret God based on your feelings(Darkness distorts perception, but it doesn’t change truth)

You hold onto what God already said(The promise doesn’t disappear just because you can’t see clearly)

You stay where God put you(Abram doesn’t run… he remains in the place of encounter)

SHIFT THE ROOM

Because some of you are trying to escape the very place where God is working.

You’re trying to get out of the tension… get out of the waiting… get out of the uncertainty…

But what if…

That’s exactly where God is forming your faith?

LAND THIS MOMENT

Before the covenant is revealed…

Before the promise is secured…

Before the breakthrough comes…

Darkness falls.

Not because God is absent…

But because He’s preparing something deeper than what Abram expected.

And if you’re in that place right now…

Don’t assume God is gone.

He may be doing His deepest work…

right in the middle of the dark.

POINT 6 – THE COVENANT GOD KEEPS ALONE

Genesis 15:9–10, 17 (READ OUTLOUD … THEN TELL THE STORY)

Now this is where everything comes together.

After the fear… after the questions… after the stars… after the darkness…

God makes a covenant.

TEACH THE CONTEXT

This is not a contract.

A contract says: “You do your part, I do mine.”

A covenant says: “This is life or death.”

In Abram’s world, when two parties made a covenant, they would:

Cut animals in half

Lay the pieces on opposite sides

Walk between them together

And what they were saying was:

“If I break this covenant… may I be torn apart like these animals.”

This is serious. This is binding. This is irreversible.

BUILD THE EXPECTATION

So Abram prepares everything.

The animals are cut. The path is set.

And now he’s waiting.

Because he knows what comes next.

You walk it.

Together.

THE SHOCK (SLOW THIS WAY DOWN)

But Abram…

doesn’t walk.

(Pause)

Instead…

God shows up.

As a smoking fire pot… and a flaming torch.

And God…

walks the path.

Alone.

(Long pause)

In every other covenant… both parties walk.

But in this one…

only God walks.

EXPLAIN THE MEANING

God is saying something radical.

“Abram… this covenant does not depend on you.”

“Abram… I’m not asking you to hold this together.”

“Abram… I’m taking full responsibility.”

Even if you fail…

I won’t.

Even if you fall short…

I won’t.

Even if you break what you’re supposed to keep…

I will still keep what I promised.

PRESS THIS INTO THE HEART

This is grace before you even get to the New Testament.

Because if this covenant depended on Abram…

It would fail.

And if your relationship with God depended on you…

It would fail.

Because we don’t keep promises perfectly.

We don’t stay consistent perfectly.

We don’t obey perfectly.

LINE

God didn’t make a deal with Abram…

He made a promise over Abram.

CONNECT TO JESUS (BUILD HERE)

And this is pointing forward.

Because one day…

God would keep this covenant in the most costly way possible.

At the cross…

Jesus doesn’t just walk between the pieces…

He becomes the pieces.

He is torn apart.

Not for His failure…

But for ours.

Because every one of us has broken covenant with God.

We’ve sinned. We’ve wandered. We’ve chosen our way over His.

And instead of us being torn apart for it…

Jesus steps in.

And takes it.

GOSPEL CLARITY

So when you trust Christ…

You are not standing on your ability to keep your word to God.

You are standing on Jesus’ ability to keep God’s word for you.

That’s why this is secure.

That’s why this is unshakeable.

That’s why your salvation doesn’t rise and fall on your performance.

PRACTICAL APPLICATION

So what does this mean for you?

You stop living like everything depends on you(Because it doesn’t—God has already secured it)

You stop trying to earn what God already promised(You walk in it, you don’t work for it)

You find rest in the faithfulness of God, not your consistency(Your hope is anchored in Him, not you)

LAND THIS MOMENT

Abram is asleep.

Darkness has fallen.

And while Abram can’t do anything…

God is doing everything.

That’s the gospel.

Not you working your way to God…

But God securing everything for you.

TRANSITION LINE

And if God is the one who made the promise…

And God is the one who keeps the promise…

Then the question is not:

“Can I hold this together?”

The question is:

“Will I trust the One who already has?”

CHRIST CONNECTION

At the cross…

Jesus is torn apart.

Not because He failed…

But because we did.

He takes the weight of broken covenant…

So we can receive the promise.

CLOSING – TWO TYPES OF PEOPLE

Let’s bring this in close…

Not just as a message…

But as a moment.

Because Genesis 15 is not just something to understand…

It’s something to respond to.

TWO TYPES OF PEOPLE

There are two types of people in this room right now.

1. The Ones Still Trying to Earn It

This is you if you’re still striving.

Still trying to prove yourself. Still trying to clean yourself up. Still trying to be “good enough” for God.

You carry guilt. You carry pressure. You carry this constant feeling of:

“I’ve got to do better.”

And you’re exhausted.

Because deep down… you know…

you’ll never be enough.

And the truth is… you’re right.

You won’t be.

That’s why Genesis 15 exists.

Because God never asked Abram to earn it.

And He’s not asking you to either.

2. The Ones Ready to Believe

This is the moment where everything shifts.

Not because you figured it all out…

But because you’re ready to trust.

Not perfect. Not polished. Not put together.

But honest enough to say:

“God… I don’t have it all together…

But I believe You.”

SLOW THE ROOM DOWN

Right now…

I want you to feel the weight of this:

Abram didn’t walk the path.

God did.

Abram didn’t secure the promise.

God did.

Abram didn’t earn righteousness.

God gave it.

And the same is true for you.

GOSPEL CALL (BUILD THIS)

So here’s the question:

Are you still trying to carry something…

that Jesus already carried for you?

Are you still trying to earn something…

that God has already promised you?

Are you still trying to fix yourself…

instead of trusting the One who already paid for you?

INVITATION MOMENT

I’m not going to rush this.

Because this matters too much.

If you’re here today…

And you know you’ve been striving…

And you’re ready to stop…

And trust Jesus for real…

Not just believe in Him…

But believe Him…

I want you to respond.

PRAYER (MORE PERSONAL)

You can pray something like this:

“Jesus…

I know I’m a sinner.

I know I can’t fix myself.

I’ve been trying… and I’m tired.

But today…

I stop striving.

And I trust You.

I believe You died for me. I believe You rose again.

I believe You paid for my sin.

And today… I give You my life.

Forgive me. Change me. Make me new.

I’m Yours.”

MOMENT FOR THE SAINT

And for those of you who already believe…

But you’ve drifted back into striving…

This is your moment too.

To lay it down again.

The pressure. The guilt. The “I’ve got to hold this together.”

You don’t.

God already has.

FINAL CALLBACK (LAND IT STRONG)

If you’re in the space…

between promise… and proof…

You’re not forgotten.

You’re not abandoned.

You’re not behind.

You’re being formed.

Look at the stars.

Look at the covenant.

Look at the cross.

God has never broken His Word.

And He’s not about to start with you.
