Scripture: Parents as Primary Disciplers

1. Deuteronomy 6:4–9

Deuteronomy 6:4–9 ESV
4 “Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. 5 You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. 6 And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. 7 You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. 8 You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. 9 You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.

Emphasis:

Command given to parents (household heads)
Ongoing, daily, life-integrated discipleship
Not outsourced—woven into everyday life

Summary line: Discipleship is not an event—it is a way of life in the home.

2. Ephesians 6:4

Ephesians 6:4 ESV
4 Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.

Emphasis:

Direct command to parents (fathers as head)
Responsibility is personal and intentional
Spiritual formation begins in the home

3. Proverbs 1:8; 6:20

Proverbs 1:8 ESV
8 Hear, my son, your father’s instruction, and forsake not your mother’s teaching,
Proverbs 6:20 ESV
20 My son, keep your father’s commandment, and forsake not your mother’s teaching.

Emphasis:

Both father and mother are involved
The home is the primary place of instruction

4. 2 Timothy 1:5; 3:14–15

2 Timothy 1:5 ESV
5 I am reminded of your sincere faith, a faith that dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice and now, I am sure, dwells in you as well.
2 Timothy 3:14–15 ESV
14 But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have firmly believed, knowing from whom you learned it 15 and how from childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.

Emphasis:

Faith passed down through family discipleship
Early training happens in the home

5. Psalm78:4–7

Psalm 78:4–7 ESV
4 We will not hide them from their children, but tell to the coming generation the glorious deeds of the Lord, and his might, and the wonders that he has done. 5 He established a testimony in Jacob and appointed a law in Israel, which he commanded our fathers to teach to their children, 6 that the next generation might know them, the children yet unborn, and arise and tell them to their children, 7 so that they should set their hope in God and not forget the works of God, but keep his commandments;

Emphasis

Generational responsibility
Parents teaching children to set their hope in God

Clarifying Balance

The church still has a role:

Ephesians 4:11–12

Ephesians 4:11–12 ESV
11 And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers, 12 to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ,

Summary:

Parents = primary disciplers
Church = equippers and partners

Fireside Chat Outline

1. Biblical Foundation

Text: Ephesians 4:11–16
Leaders equip the saints
Saints do the work of ministry
The body builds itself up
Key statement: A ministry that no one owns is not a ministry, but a burden.

2. Why We Are Having This Conversation

Informative + brainstorming
No final decisions
Inviting church input

3. Why Now

Jeff & Terry stepping back
Real ministry gaps
Limited people/resources
Cannot overload others
Summary: This is forcing us to evaluate, not just replace.

4. Core Principle: Ownership

We need initiative and ownership
Not just filling roles
If no ownership → pause, revise, or end
Summary: Ministry should be carried by calling, not pressure.

5. The Bigger Question

What is our philosophy of ministry?
What kind of church are we trying to be?
Summary: This is not about plugging holes—it’s about shaping the body.

6. Concern About Current Models

Spectator-driven
Program-heavy
Age-segregated
Often unsustainable
Summary: We want participation, not passive attendance.

7. Intergenerational Vision

Older teaching younger
Younger learning from older
Relationships across the whole body
Summary: If the church is a family, our structure should reflect that.

8. Parents as Primary Disciplers

Key Scriptures:

Deuteronomy 6:4–9
Ephesians 6:4
Proverbs 1:8
2 Timothy 1:5
Psalm 78:4–7

Emphasis:

God gives parents the primary responsibility
Discipleship is meant to be daily and relational
Faith is passed down in the home

Clarification:

The church equips and supports (Ephesians 4:11–12)
Not replacing the home, but strengthening it
Summary statement: The church should not replace the home, but reinforce and equip it.
Helpful question: Are we helping parents disciple their children, or unintentionally encouraging them to outsource that responsibility?

9. Possible Direction

(Not final, but under consideration)
Move toward more family-integrated ministry
Reduce age-segregated structures
Keep nursery for youngest
Equip parents with tools for children in service
Rethink small groups (possibly Sunday evening, homes, etc.)
Increase fellowship and shared life
Summary: We may need to stop trying to live in two models and choose one direction.

10. Acknowledge Tensions

Countercultural
Not easy
Requires buy-in
Requires intentionality
Affects families in real ways
Summary: Better does not always mean easier—but it may be more faithful.

11. Questions for the Church

What excites you?
What concerns you?
What seems unsustainable?
Where do you see lack of ownership?
How can we better equip parents?
How can we build intergenerational discipleship?
Where might God be calling you to step in?

12. Closing

Not about doing less for convenience
About being more biblical and sustainable
About real body life
Final summary: We don’t just want to keep ministry going—we want to become the kind of church Christ calls us to be.
