I. Discipleship Defined (Lk14:25-27)
Jesus already has the commitment of the apostles, they have let everything and followed Him, now He is calling the crowd to count the cost or exact the cost of following Him as a disciple.

(Slide) The term “hate” reflects a hyperbolic Hebrew idiom which means to “love less.”

The disciple needs to count the cost to make sure he is willing to pay the cost until the end, until the task is completed being building or battling or even adding flavor

Campbell Morgan says “the building and the king are Jesus and He is looking for materials HE can use to build the church and battle the enemy.
The job needs dedicated followers who are not half-hearted who will not pay the prices.”

(Slide) Salt in the day was a valued item, soldiers were even paid part of their pay in salt.
Anyone hear the saying “they are not worth their salt?” - Salt then could lose its usefulness and be thrown out to be trampled under foot.
(Slide) Salt is a preservative - WE are in the world to help people to learn and grow away from the evil of this world to help preserve the world
(Slide) Salt is a purifying agent - It helps purify things to make things clearer - we have the Good News to help people to understand the truth and respond to it.
(Slide) Salt gives flavor - It add’s flavor to things but it also makes one thirsty ; by our character, by our conduct, by our words we can make people thirsty for the Lord Jesus Christ and the salvation He offers!

If we tell Jesus we want to pick up the cross and follow Him as His disciples HE wants us to fully understand what we are committing to.
No false expectations, no illusions, no bargains.
The task is too serious for it has eternal consequences.
