Mark 3:13–19 “13 And He went up on the mountain and called to Him those He Himself wanted. And they came to Him. 14 Then He appointed twelve, that they might be with Him and that He might send them out to preach, 15 and to have power to heal sicknesses and to cast out demons: 16 Simon, to whom He gave the name Peter; 17 James the son of Zebedee and John the brother of James, to whom He gave the name Boanerges, that is, “Sons of Thunder”; 18 Andrew, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, James the son of Alphaeus, Thaddaeus, Simon the Cananite; 19 and Judas Iscariot, who also betrayed Him. And they went into a house.”
Our last time together we find our Savior in a compromised situation.
Mark 3:6 “6 Then the Pharisees went out and immediately plotted with the Herodians against Him, how they might destroy Him.”
The Pharisees mindset had hardened them to any form of reason with the good things of the Lord and His actions toward humanity.
In the verses following, Jesus withdrew with His disciples toward the sea. But the interesting thing is that there is a fundamental and yet simplistic reality we see in this verse.
A. The Need to be Made Whole
Everyone has need to be made whole. Everyone wants to escape their past. Everyone wants a do over in this life. Everyone wants peace from their past.
Ill. Rice Temple Baptist Church-Melting Pot community with the Medical District. Oh dearly beloved, this is how church is to be. If you have prejudices you better clear them up down here because you will be worshiping with all creeds, all cultures, all races in Heaven.
B. The Drive to be made whole
I want to say it again and understand they crossed all cultural barriers to seek Jesus. We think we know something about prejudices. I question if there has ever been a more prejudice individual than a Jew. Everyone besides them were “dogs.”
“when they heard how many things He was doing, they came to Him.”
What jesus was accomplishing in the lives of others was more important than His race, His creed, His background, the color of His skin, His nationality, etc.
And listen to what Jesus tells His disciples:
Mark 3:9 “9 So He told His disciples that a small boat should be kept ready for Him because of the multitude, lest they should crush Him.”
Mark 3:10 “10 For He healed many, so that as many as had afflictions pressed about Him to touch Him.”
This became a pattern. Undoubtedly, the woman who had been hemorrhaging for twelve years had heard that if “she just brushed the hem of His garment”, she could be healed. This was a pattern.
Mark 3:11–12 “11 And the unclean spirits, whenever they saw Him, fell down before Him and cried out, saying, “You are the Son of God.” 12 But He sternly warned them that they should not make Him known.”
