Week 4: The Idol Beneath the Anger

“Have you ever been angry…and knew you shouldn’t be…

but you still felt justified?

Like deep down you knew:

‘This isn’t right… but I still feel right.’

That’s a frustrating place to be.

Because your mind says one thing…

but your heart feels another.”

“Over the last several weeks, we’ve been walking through this series Untamed.

Week 1 — anger is like fire. Week 2 — anger reveals the heart. Week 3 — there’s a war within us.

But today…

we go deeper than all of that.

Today WE ANSWER THIS QUESTION.....

What’s underneath the anger?”

LET’S LOOK AT JONAH REAL QUICK

Jonah 1:1–3 NIV

1 The word of the Lord came to Jonah son of Amittai: 2 “Go to the great city of Nineveh and preach against it, because its wickedness has come up before me.” 3 But Jonah ran away from the Lord and headed for Tarshish. He went down to Joppa, where he found a ship bound for that port. After paying the fare, he went aboard and sailed for Tarshish to flee from the Lord.

WE KNOW HOW THAT ENDED....

FISH SWALLOWED HIM UP

AND THEN SPIT HIM OUT AFTER 3 DAYS

SO JONAH FINALLY WENT TO NINEVAH...

Jonah 3:6–10 NIV

6 When Jonah’s warning reached the king of Nineveh, he rose from his throne, took off his royal robes, covered himself with sackcloth and sat down in the dust. 7 This is the proclamation he issued in Nineveh: “By the decree of the king and his nobles: Do not let people or animals, herds or flocks, taste anything; do not let them eat or drink. 8 But let people and animals be covered with sackcloth. Let everyone call urgently on God. Let them give up their evil ways and their violence. 9 Who knows? God may yet relent and with compassion turn from his fierce anger so that we will not perish.” 10 When God saw what they did and how they turned from their evil ways, he relented and did not bring on them the destruction he had threatened.

Jonah 4:1–2 NIV

1 But to Jonah this seemed very wrong, and he became angry. 2 He prayed to the Lord, “Isn’t this what I said, Lord, when I was still at home? That is what I tried to forestall by fleeing to Tarshish. I knew that you are a gracious and compassionate God, slow to anger and abounding in love, a God who relents from sending calamity.

Jonah 4:4–11 NIV

4 But the Lord replied, “Is it right for you to be angry?” 5 Jonah had gone out and sat down at a place east of the city. There he made himself a shelter, sat in its shade and waited to see what would happen to the city. 6 Then the Lord God provided a leafy plant and made it grow up over Jonah to give shade for his head to ease his discomfort, and Jonah was very happy about the plant. 7 But at dawn the next day God provided a worm, which chewed the plant so that it withered. 8 When the sun rose, God provided a scorching east wind, and the sun blazed on Jonah’s head so that he grew faint. He wanted to die, and said, “It would be better for me to die than to live.” 9 But God said to Jonah, “Is it right for you to be angry about the plant?” “It is,” he said. “And I’m so angry I wish I were dead.” 10 But the Lord said, “You have been concerned about this plant, though you did not tend it or make it grow. It sprang up overnight and died overnight. 11 And should I not have concern for the great city of Nineveh, in which there are more than a hundred and twenty thousand people who cannot tell their right hand from their left—and also many animals?”

OH COME ON SOMEBODY....

HAS ANYBODY BEEN THERE BEFORE....

LIKE IT JUST SEEMS SO UNFAIR

AND YOUR ANGRY ABOUT IT

OR MAYBE GOD GAVE SOMETHING TO YOU

AND THEN IT SEEMED LIKE HE JUST TOOK IT AWAY...

ANYONE?????

1. You Can Be Right… and Still Be Wrong

Jonah is angry.

But here’s what makes this interesting.

He actually has a reason.

Nineveh was wicked.

They deserved judgment.

Jonah’s logic made sense.

OH COME ON SOMEBODY....

“You can be right about a situation…

and still be wrong in your heart.”

LOOK WHAT GOD SAYS....

1 Samuel 16:7 NIV

7 But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”

“Jonah had the right theology…

but the wrong heart posture.

“And if we’re honest…

this is where a lot of us live.

IS THERE ANYONE HERE THAT CAN BE REAL

AND AGREE WITH ME THIS MORNING....

I MEAN DON’T GET ME WRONG......

WE LOVE JESUS AND WE UNDERSTAND WHAT IT MEANS TO BE SAVED....

WE UNDERSTAND WHAT IS RIGHT AND WRONG BUT......

OUR HEART POSTURE IS WRONG

We justify our anger because we can explain it.

But explanation does not equal justification.”

“Being right doesn’t make your anger righteous.”

2. Anger Exposes Hidden Idols

OH COME ON....WE TALKED ABOUT IDOLS A LITTLE BIT LAST WEEK...

Jonah says:

“I knew that you are a gracious God…” — Jonah 4:2

DID YOU CATCH THAT?????

He’s quoting truth about God…

while being angry at God.

I KNOW NONE OF US HAVE BEEN THERE BEFORE

I MEAN I’M SURE NONE OF US HAVE TRIED TO USE HIS OWN WORD AGAINST HIM....

“GOD....YOUR WORD SAID THIS AND YOU PROMISED.....WHY ISN’T IT HAPPENING

WHY DOES IT FEEL LIKE YOUR NOT EVEN LISTENING TO ME????”

OH COME ON....

HERE’S THE PROBLEM WITH JONAH....

“Jonah didn’t have a knowledge problem.

He had a heart problem.”

HE KNEW WHO GOD WAS....

BUT SOMETHING, WITHIN HIM GOT IN THE WAY

HIS HEART HAD THE WRONG POSTURE TOWARD GOD

SOMETHING INSIDE OF HIM WAS MORE IMPORTANT THAN GOD AND WHAT GOD SAID

Matthew 15:8 NIV

8 “ ‘These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me.

LISTEN TO ME CHURCH....

“You can know truth…

and still resist God in your heart.”

(Pause)

“Jonah wasn’t angry because God was wrong.

He was angry because God didn’t do what Jonah wanted.”

“Your anger reveals the version of life you think God should give you.”

Everyday Reflection

“When life doesn’t go the way you expected…

when people don’t respond the way you hoped…

when outcomes don’t match your plans…

anger begins to rise.

Why?

Because something inside you says:

‘This is not how it’s supposed to go.’”

“Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” — Matthew 6:21

IN OTHER WORDS...

“What you treasure most…

is what you react to most.”

we fix our heart posture toward God in three ways:

we turn, we trust, and we realign.”

I. We Turn (Repentance)

“Return to me… and I will return to you.” — Malachi 3:7

Malachi 3:7 NIV

7 Ever since the time of your ancestors you have turned away from my decrees and have not kept them. Return to me, and I will return to you,” says the Lord Almighty.

“Turning means we stop going our way…and we come back to God.

It’s not just feeling bad…

it’s changing direction.”

“Repentance is not punishment…

it’s realignment.”

II. We Trust (Surrender)

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart…” — Proverbs 3:5–6

Proverbs 3:5–6 NIV

5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; 6 in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.

“We release control.

We stop trying to make everything go our way…

and we trust that God knows better.”

“Surrender is choosing God’s way…over your way.”

III. We Realign (Renew the Heart Daily)

“Set your minds on things above…” — Colossians 3:2

2 Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.

“We don’t fix our heart once…

we realign it daily.

We remind ourselves:

God is enough.”

“Alignment is not a moment…

it’s a daily decision.”

(Clean Delivery)

“Simply put…

we fix our heart posture toward God by:

turning back to Him…

trusting Him with what we’re holding…

and realigning our hearts with Him daily.”

(Pause)

“God isn’t asking for a perfect heart…

He’s asking for a surrendered one.”

3. Anger Narrows Your Vision

Jonah leaves the city.

He sits outside.

He watches.

He’s no longer thinking about:

the people

the repentance

the mercy of God

He’s thinking about himself.

OH COME ON SOMEBODY.....

“Unchecked anger shrinks your world down to you.”

Philippians 2:3 NIV

3 Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves,

OH COME ON....THIS IS HARD

BUT THIS IS THE LEVEL THAT GOD IS CALLING US TOO

“When anger takes over…

you stop seeing clearly.”

NOTHING ELSE SEEMS TO MATTER IN THAT MOMENT....

YOU DON’T THINK CLEARLY

YOU DON’T ACT RATIONALLY

YOU SAY THINGS THAT TEAR DOWN AND DESTROY

“You stop seeing people as people…

and start seeing them as problems.”

THIS IS NOT GOD’S PERSPECTIVE!

4. God Goes After the Heart

God asks:

Jonah 4:4 NIV

4 But the Lord replied, “Is it right for you to be angry?”

God doesn’t just correct Jonah.

He questions him.

Why?

Because questions reveal the heart.

IN COUNCELING...

WHEN YOU WANT TO KNOW SOMEONE

WHEN YOU WANT TO KNOW THEIR MOTIVES

YOU QUESTION THEM

IN THE QUESTIONING...SOMETIMES...

YOU CAN GET THEM TO SEE TRUTH ON THEIR OWN

SIMPLY BY HAVING THEM EXPOSE THEMSELVES THROUGH QUESTIONING

IT’S CALLED SOCRATIC QUESTIONING

I DON’T THINK GOD IS USING THIS HOWEVER....

“God will confront your anger…

but He’ll do it in a way that exposes your heart.”

WE SEE IT ALL IN SCRIPTURE....

THIS IS WHAT HE IS DOING WITH JONAH.....

“Why does this bother you so much?”

(Pause)

“What are you really upset about?”

(Pause)

I LOVE THIS PASSAGE.....

Psalm 139:23 NIV

23 Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts.

...........WORSHIP TEAM COME...........

5. God Reveals What You Love Most

WATCH THIS.....

God appoints a plant.

It gives Jonah shade.

Then it dies.

AND Jonah gets angry again.

Jonah 4:10 NIV

10 But the Lord said, “You have been concerned about this plant, though you did not tend it or make it grow. It sprang up overnight and died overnight.

Jonah cares more about his comfort…

than HE DOES about people.

UNDERSTAND THIS.....

“You ARE always most emotional about what you love most.”

“Jonah’s anger wasn’t really about Nineveh.

It was about comfort.

It was about control.

It was about what he wanted.”

“Covetousness… is idolatry.” — Colossians 3:5

“When something matters so much to you…

that losing it disrupts your peace…

it may not just be.... important…

it may be ultimate.”

the real question is not:

‘Why am I angry?’

The real question is:

‘What do I love more than God right now?’”

ASK YOURSELF......

“Where is your heart out of alignment with His?”

“Because whatever you love most…

will shape how you respond.”

.......STAND TO YOUR FEET......

Here’s the good news.

God doesn’t leave Jonah in his anger.

And He doesn’t leave us there either.

Ezekiel 36:26 NIV

26 I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh.

“God doesn’t just manage your anger.

He transforms your heart.”

“This isn’t just about anger.

This is about alignment.

EVERY HEAD BOWED AND EYE CLOSED....

What in your life…

matters more to you than God right now?”

(Pause)

“What are you holding onto…that when it’s threatened…

your peace disappears?”

I WANT TO MAKE THIS SIMPLE TODAY...

“If you’re ready to surrender that…

to trust God…

to realign your heart with His…

I want to invite you to come.”

“Freedom from anger begins when your heart wants what God wants.”

........CLOSING PRAYER.........

“Father…

You see our hearts.

You see what we hold onto… what we try to control… what we’re afraid to lose.

Your Word says:

‘Search me, O God, and know my heart…’ — Psalm 139:23

So today, Lord, we invite You in.

Show us where our hearts are out of alignment.

LORD WE ADMIT TO YOU

THAT we’ve held onto things tighter than we should.

We’ve trusted our way more than Yours.

But today, we choose surrender.

So we release it.

We let go.

We trust You.

Give us new hearts, Lord.

Align our hearts with Yours.

And THE NEXT TIME ANGER RISES…

remind us to return to You.

We NEED YOU...

We surrender to You.

In Jesus’ name…

Amen.”
