SERMON TITLE: “The Marks of a Mighty Mother”

2 Timothy 1:5 “I recall your sincere faith that first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice and now, I am convinced, is in you also.”

Proverbs 31:25–31 “Strength and honor are her clothing, and she can laugh at the time to come. Her mouth speaks wisdom, and loving instruction is on her tongue. She watches over the activities of her household and is never idle. Her children rise up and call her blessed; her husband also praises her: “Many women have done noble deeds, but you surpass them all!” Charm is deceptive and beauty is fleeting, but a woman who fears the Lord will be praised. Give her the reward of her labor, and let her works praise her at the city gates.”

INTRODUCTION —

There’s a story about a preacher who pondered a simple but profound question: To what did he owe the success of his life? He thought through every chapter of his life’s journey. Was it the advanced training he received from godly mentors? The disciplined life dedicated to God that he tried to maintain? His devotion to Scripture? His commitment to personal prayer? All of these mattered—deeply. Yet, as he looked back, he realized none of them could hold a candle to the real power behind God’s blessings on his life.

After spending much time in thought about this question I understand the conclusion I have come to realize more now than ever. Because when I trace the fingerprints of God across my life’s story, I keep finding the same truth: three women—three praying mothers—have been the unseen force, the steady intercessors, the quiet warriors who stood in the gap for me. Their prayers have shaped my path, softened my heart, protected me from dangers I never saw, and opened doors I never could have opened on my own. I am convinced that a huge part for the reason my life is what it is today is because these women carried my name to the throne of grace long before I ever knew how much I needed it.

Those three women - my mother, the mother of my children, and my mother-in-Law. Their prayers didn’t just influence my life—they anchored it, blessed it, and helped build it.

Mothers often feel unseen. But unseen does not mean unimportant. Hidden does not mean insignificant. Quiet does not mean powerless. Scripture shows us again and again: God uses faithful mothers to shape future leaders, future believers, and future generations.

On this mother’s day I want us to look at what scripture says about the “Marks of a Mighty Mother”

I. A Mother’s FAITH That INSPIRES 2 Timothy 1:5

Paul tells Timothy, “I am reminded of your sincere faith, which first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice…”

Timothy’s faith didn’t begin in a synagogue or a seminary. It began in a living room, on a lap, and a life lived faithfully through his grandmother and mother.

A mother’s faith is often: Demonstrated before it is declared.

I want to say this to every mother and if you don’t hear anything else in this message please hear this.

Long before your children will get to the place where they can make a decision about Jesus you will be the Jesus they will see...or not see!

How you conduct yourself in the early years of your children’s life is going to impact them in how and what they think about Jesus.

Children may not remember every one of your lectures, but they will never forget the life you live in front of them. They may not recall every Bible verse you quote, but they will remember the Bible you live.

Moms, your faith doesn’t have to be perfect to be powerful. The Bible tells us in James that “we all stumble in many ways”. Your kids don’t need a flawless mother—they need a faithful one. Your quiet consistency may be the loudest sermon they ever hear.

Be a Mighty Mother who’s faithfulness inspires others.

Let’s move to Proverbs chapter 31 where we will see the rest of the Marks of a Mighty Mother

II. A Mother’s STRENGTH That ENDURES (Proverbs 31:25)

“She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come.”

This is not the strength of someone who has it all together. This is the strength of someone who knows God holds it all together.

A godly mother shows strength in many ways but I want us to look quickly at three...

Stability in stress - this is the basic stress that comes from living in the world today. These are the little things that happen every day that simply ask us to maintain a christian life of consistency. For example: You’re getting breakfast ready for the kids when one of them spills a glass of Orange Juice. The minor stresses of life but how will you handle it?

Steadfastness in struggle - this is what happens when the stress is upgraded to a struggle. A mighty mom will continue to display a strength that endures because they know: Philippians 4:13 “I am able to do all things through him who strengthens me.” When there is more month left but no money, when you open the refrigerator for food and there is none, when you’re boss at work says you’re no longer needed...and the list of struggles continue. The Mighty Mother continues in the faith knowing that Jesus has her back!

Strength in storms - sometimes we handle the stress and struggle but still get a storm. A Mighty Mother refuses to give in to the storm because she knows who is in charge of the wind and the waves. Remember when Jesus told the disciples that they needed to cross over the sea of Galilee then promptly laid down and went to sleep. Why did he go to sleep? Two reasons: (1) He was tired, and (2) He wasn’t concerned with the wind and the waves. Why should He be worried about what He commands! That same Jesus that spoke a word and the storms ceased is the same Jesus that guides your life!

Illustration: Think of a lighthouse. It doesn’t calm the storm. It doesn’t stop the waves. It simply stands—steady, shining, unshaken. Many mothers are lighthouses. They stand when the winds of worry blow. They shine when the nights grow long. They stay when others walk away.

Moms, your endurance is not unnoticed by God. Every tear, every prayer, every late night, every early morning—He sees it. And He strengthens you for what He has called you to do.

Be a Mighty Mother who’s faithfulness inspires others. Be a Mighty Mother who’s strength endures...third,

III. A Mother’s LOVE That INFLUENCES (Proverbs 31:28–31)

“Her children arise and call her blessed…”

A mother’s love is one of the most shaping forces on earth. It forms identity. It builds confidence. It teaches compassion.

A mother’s love is:

Persistent. It doesn’t quit. There is no give up in a Mighty Mother. It doesn’t matter the situation or how dire it might become a Mighty Mother will do whatever it takes because of her Love! This is the exact nature of our Lord for us! He will go as far as He needs to go for us!

Patient. Aren’t you glad we serve a God who is patient with us? And since He is patient with us we should be patient with those around us. A Mighty Mother allows her children to make mistakes without condemnation. To love them through their difficulties. To offer them refuge and continue to point them to Jesus no matter the circumstances.

Powerful - Have you ever witnessed the power of a mother when their children are threatened? But mother’s hear me please. Your children are threatened daily. They are threatened by spiritual forces that are unseen. This is why it is so important to pray for your children daily!

Illustration:

Sociologists say a child needs at least one person who is “crazy about them” to thrive. For many, that person is Mom. When a mother believes in her child, it becomes easier for that child to believe in God’s love for them.

Moms, your influence is greater than you think. You are shaping souls. You are forming futures. You are building believers. Never, ever, take for granted your role as a Mighty Mother.

Be a Mighty Mother who’s faithfulness inspires others. Be a Mighty Mother who’s strength endures. Be a Mighty Mother who’s Love Influences those around you. And the last Mark of a Mighty Mother I want you to see is...

IV. A Mother’s CALLING That MATTERS (Proverbs 31:30)

“A woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.”

Motherhood is not a side assignment. It is not a secondary calling. It is not a cultural role. It is a God-given mission

A mother’s calling is to:

Point her children to Christ. I’m going to say this again. Mother’s Long before your children will get to the place where they can make a decision about Jesus you will be the Jesus they will see...or not see!

Pray them through challenges. Don’t just pray for your children. Pray with them. One of the best examples that you can demonstrate for your children is that you are a believer in prayer, an example of a prayer warrior, and there is no better way to prove that fact than to live it out in front of and with your children.

Prepare them for God’s purposes. Mother’s make sure your children understand that God has a purpose for them on this earth. How many times have we heard adults ask children this question: What do you want to be when you grow up? My friends that is not the best question to ask. A better question is what does God want you to do with your life?

Illustration: Let me tell you about a Mighty Mother from the past.

Before this Mighty Mother became a mother herself, she was the youngest in a family with 25 children. Married at the age of 19 she and her husband had 19 children. To say that she experienced her fair share of difficulties would be a huge understatement. Nine of her children died as infants. While raising the remaining 10 children her husband got his feelings hurt during a minor dispute and decided to abandon his family for a year leaving this Mighty Mother to fend for herself. During this time she wrote a letter to her wayward husband.

“I am a woman, but I am also the mistress of a large family. And though the superior charge of the souls contained in it lies upon you, yet in your long absence I cannot but look upon every soul you leave under my charge as a talent committed to me under a trust. I am not a man nor a minister, yet as a mother and a mistress I felt I ought to do more than I had yet done. I resolved to begin with my own children; in which I observe the following method: I take such a proportion of time as I can spare every night to discourse with each child apart.”

In addition to the difficult task of caring for her family in the absence of her husband, this family would lose their house and all their belongings to fire not once but twice. After the second fire she was forced to place her children in other’s homes while she secured a new home. This took 2 years. Upon receiving her children back she was mortified to find they had picked up bad habits while away such as poor language. She would homeschool her children and due to a lack of spiritual teaching she began to have worship services in her home with her children.

On her gravesite these words are written...In the Bunhill Fields Burial Ground opposite lie the remains of Susannah Wesley, widow of the Rev. Samuel Wesley...who died July 23rd 1742, aged 78 years. She was the youngest daughter of the Rev Samuel Annesley...She was the mother of the Revs. John and Charles Wesley, the former of whom was under God the founder of the societies of the people called Methodists.

Susannah Wesley wasn’t a preacher, but she shaped preachers. She wasn’t a missionary, but she raised missionaries. She wasn’t famous, but her children shook the world.

Moms, you may feel like you’re just surviving—but God is using you to shape eternity. Your calling matters more than you know. Moms, your work is holy. Your calling is sacred. Your influence is eternal.

I have three different invitations for us this morning.

The first one is for all the Mothers...

Keep praying even when you don’t see results. Keep believing even when you feel weary. Keep trusting even when the path is unclear. Keep sowing because God promises a harvest in His timing.

The second one is for husbands and children...

Love, honor, encourage, and pray for your mothers. Never take them for granted.

The third one is for the church...

Honor mothers. Support mothers. Pray for mothers. Stand with mothers.

Why...Because behind every Timothy, there is a Eunice. Behind every leader, there is a Lois. Behind every great work of God, there is often a mother whose name we may not know—but whose faith God is using to shape the world.
