Revelation at the Table

The two disciples on the road were met by Jesus in their pain and discouragement and disillusionment.  Jesus takes them on a journey, opening the Scriptures to them, and crowning the day with a revelation of Himself during the course of table-fellowship.  How do we practice resurrection reality daily?  We recognize and invite Him as the “unseen” host of our daily lives, and create a personal and corporate rhythm of worship in our lives informed by His actions at the “table” (taking, giving thanks, breaking, and giving).

Resurrection Meals

At least four times in the Gospels, Jesus almost formulaically performs the actions of taking, blessing, breaking, and giving. It’s done around a meal setting, table fellowship, with disciples. Whether or not Jesus has been invited to host the meal, He always ends up as the host. I think He would have it that way. In this case, he is the guest at Cleopas’ home, but when He sits at the table, He acts as host.
So the two things to keep in mind with Jesus in this setting: 1) He is always the host, and 2) disciples are not required to have it all together to sit with Jesus at the table.
Jesus’ actions in being Host reflect His sanctified rhythm of activity in our lives. For us, it reflects the shape of our daily worship unto Him.
