Introduction

Do you think there is such a thing as love at first sight?
How many of us can remember that scene in the movie Titanic, when Rose is beautifully dressed coming down the staircase.
Jack is at the bottom of the stairs…and they just met earlier that day when Rose was about to jump from the Titanic into the ocean.
As a reward, Jack is invited to dinner in the first class cabin.
Jack was given a very sharp looking tuxedo to wear…and he’s waiting for Rose to walk down the staircase.
Their eyes meet and he takes her hand - and you know that those two are absolutely in love.
Here’s another couple - when he first set eyes on her, he was absolutely in love and knew that very day that one day they would be married.
Well, even in the Bible we see such as scene.
We see, as if it were, the father of the bride, bring the bride towards the groom - who has just had rib surgery.
Then, as he awakes, he sees his soon to be wife for the first time in his life.
He’s never seen her before.
This is the first time that he lays eyes on her.
…and as soon as he sees her, he comes up with a love poem.
Génesis 2:23 ESV
23 Then the man said, “This at last is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.”
We are talking about Adam and Eve…when God had formed woman he brought her to the man…and he loved her with all his heart and mind.
…and the question is, what would cause Adam to fall in love with a woman he’s never met, and to top it off, she’s the first woman he’s ever scene.
Before God formed woman…all we see in the garden are birds, fish, and land animals.
Was it as Bruno Mars says:
When I see your face There's not a thing that I would change 'Cause you're amazing Just the way you are And when you smile The whole world stops and stares for a while 'Cause, girl, you're amazing Just the way you are Yeah
These lyrics base love merely on physical attraction; and that’s usually what brings a man and a woman together for the first time.
But physical attraction, physical beauty is not enough to sustain a relationship.
Adam was absolutely in love with the woman that God had formed because God knew what he was doing when he created her from Adam’s rib.
Génesis 2:20 ESV
20 The man gave names to all livestock and to the birds of the heavens and to every beast of the field. But for Adam there was not found a helper fit for him.
God made woman so that she would be a helper for for the man.
This does not mean that God created woman in order to serve Adam as if she were his waitress, servant, or cook.
This does not mean that God created woman so that he could boss her around and meet his every need.
God made woman to be complementary to man.
God made another human being that would like Adam (created in the image of God) but would also be different from Adam in that she would be able to do many things that Adam could not.
Note how a woman is known to be nurturing, loving, detail oriented, etc…different from how man is wired.
But we also learned that God made woman to solve a glaring problem.
Génesis 2:18 ESV
18 Then the Lord God said, “It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him.”
God made woman so that man would not be alone.
God made woman so that as a pair they would enjoy fellowship, communion, conversation, show love to one another, demonstrate respect for each other, bounce ideas off one another, make plans together, build each other up.
So at the end of the day, it wasn’t physical beauty that brought these two together.
Rather, it was the realization that God had brought someone into Adam’s life that would become his life partner.
It was the realization that God had formed someone that would make them both stronger, wiser, and a better version of themselves.
So, today we give God thanks for giving us the gift of marriage.
…and we pray, that our young people would be guided by God to find that person that will complement them so that they too will share in the joy of marriage, just like Adam did in the garden.
We pray that you would wait upon God and listen to wise counsel as you discern his will for you in finding a husband or wife.
