The Power of Selflessness: Serving in Christ's Footsteps

Bible Passage: Php 2:1–4, Php 2:19–30

Context: Phil 1:27-30

Paul is imprisoned and he is communicating important truths through a messenger to the church at Philippi. The theme of this letter is joy and rejoicing. Ironic because of his situation, yet he learned to have joy even in such circumstances. Remember the last lesson on being thankful.

A. The call to a certain lifestyle (conversation)

- one that is centered around the Gospel (which brings these three points)

to salvation, to suffer, to strive together

How?

1. Unite in Love and Spirit

Php 2:1–2

Paul begins by urging the Philippians to be unified through being of the same mind and spirit, acting out of love and compassion (bowels and mercies). This sets the foundation for Christian community, which flourishes when believers prioritize others. As an entry point, discuss how this introduction connects to the Christ-centered life of humility and service.

A. Paul recognizes that there are inconveniences and struggles in life. (I'm sure that's putting it lightly). However he says in ch1 its not only on you to believe but to suffer! so when he says “If there be...” it is a given- he is stating the obvious. The he asks us to do something that would make him happy (Christ as well)

b. Paul promotes unity and likeminded service. He mentions oneness in love, accord, mind, and service as well as interest in other. We should be just as interested in others as they are interested in us. And also discourages strife and pride.

2. Value Others Above Self (v3-5)

A. Paul's call us to avoid selfish ambition and vain conceit, instead valuing others above ourselves and considering their interests. This radical shift away from self-centeredness mirrors Christ's humility. Realize whose mind this is - Christ’s

B. Notice how Christ's example empowers us to live selflessly. (v6-8)

God calls us to work it out ourselves. (v.12)

God is the one who will perfect these things in you. (v13)

14-18 he mentions don't bicker and complain. a light must shine- not complain. Paul very well could die, but don’t worry it’s not in vain if you continue for the Gospel. And besides, we have Timothy...

3. Timothy's Genuine Concern (an example of a likeminded man)

Php 2:19–24

Timothy's genuine concern for the welfare of others is highlighted by Paul. Timothy models selflessness by serving the interests of Christ, thereby serving others around him. This example can motivate us as believers to consider how we might serve Christ by serving where we are most needed.

A. notice a pitiful statement in verse 21. All men are selfish, but not Timothy he will be a likeminded leader in my absence.

B. And there is another person mentioned. Epaphroditus.

4. Epaphroditus: A Sacrificial Servant

Php 2:25–30

You could delve into Epaphroditus, we know he was a fellow worker who risked his life for the gospel. His dedication and sacrificial service show what selflessness looks like in extreme situations. what would it take to embody such commitment in our everyday lives, inspired by the self-sacrificial love of Christ, who laid down His life for us?

A. This man was a messenger, a brother, a companion in labor, fellow soldier, a minister to Paul. And by the way he did it all alone. the church couldn’t be there for Paul, but he was there.

B. He was so commited and so serious about it, it almost killed him. I wonder what we are willing to sacrifice for the needs of others? for the Gospel? Because most of the time when the going gets tough and things get inconvenient, what do we do? we stop. We quit. We leave. etc. Not Ep. He stayed, he suffered, he strived with Paul -and with Christ.

C. Paul’s inspiration in writing all this came from somewhere. Yes the Holy Spirit, but I think also from watching this man- a selfless, sacrificial servant of Christ at work.
