“whom I called” Isa 43.1

Isaiah 43:1 ESV

1 But now thus says the Lord, he who created you, O Jacob, he who formed you, O Israel: “Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are mine.

It either refers to the call to be a people or may be a substitute for “who is called by My Name.”

Due attention must be paid to the preposition and suffix (unto me), for Israel has all along been hearkening to the idols and to the false prophets. Israel is to hearken unto its God, who alone has the words of life and truth and who alone can deliver.

There is a certain gradation introduced by the particle ’aph. “I am the first, and more than that, I am also the last.” Thus, the absolute independence of God over His creation is given the emphasis. To such a God Israel is commanded to hearken.

In the second line the participle is to be translated as a present, Calling9 am I unto them; they shall stand, or, let them stand together. The reference is not to the original creation, but rather shows that God the Creator possesses absolute authority over the work of His hands. When He calls them, they stand ready to obey and to serve Him. The language thus joins together the two ideas of creation and service to God. “Thou hast established the earth, and it abideth. They continue this day according to thine ordinances; for all are thy servants” (

For Isaiah says, “Lord, who has believed what he has heard from us?” 17 So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ. 18 But I ask, have they not heard? Indeed they have, for “Their voice has gone out to all the earth, and their words to the ends of the world.” 19 But I ask, did Israel not understand? First Moses says, “I will make you jealous of those who are not a nation; with a foolish nation I will make you angry.” 20 Then Isaiah is so bold as to say, “I have been found by those who did not seek me; I have shown myself to those who did not ask for me.” 21 But of Israel he says, “All day long I have held out my hands to a disobedient and contrary people.””

Romans 13:8–14 ESV

8 Owe no one anything, except to love each other, for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law. 9 For the commandments, “You shall not commit adultery, You shall not murder, You shall not steal, You shall not covet,” and any other commandment, are summed up in this word: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” 10 Love does no wrong to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfilling of the law. 11 Besides this you know the time, that the hour has come for you to wake from sleep. For salvation is nearer to us now than when we first believed. 12 The night is far gone; the day is at hand. So then let us cast off the works of darkness and put on the armor of light. 13 Let us walk properly as in the daytime, not in orgies and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and sensuality, not in quarreling and jealousy. 14 But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires.
