The Statutes of the Lord

Text: Psalm 19.7-11

The Statutes of the Lord are Right Rejoicing the heart.

 In 1898,  reported on a massive scandal involving fraudulent construction at the Brooklyn Navy Yard. The investigation found that piling meant to be sunk 40 feet was only stuck in 4 feet of mud, and faulty materials were used, leading to massive structural issues.

CIT: God’s Ways are always right, and produce joy in those that follow.

Because God’s Word is perfectly right, it meets the deepest need of the human heart for moral and spiritual alignment, producing true and lasting joy in those who receive and obey it.

The Wrong Standard

When the United States government finished a dry dock in Brooklyn, they discovered something costly—it was too short. Ships that needed repair couldn’t even fit inside it.

After investigation, they found the problem wasn’t the design, the workers, or the materials. The problem was the measuring tape. It was just slightly off—barely noticeable—but that small error multiplied over time until the entire structure was wrong.

According to New York state this story is very likely untrue. It appears to be an engineering urban legend.

While there was a major, costly scandal regarding the construction of Dry Dock #1 at the Brooklyn Navy Yard in the 19th century, it was not due to a slightly off measuring tape.

That’s not just a construction problem—that’s a human problem.

Many people are building their lives with a faulty standard.

They build a life on good enough. They build with faulty materials and when their lives are no different than the worlds they blame the Bible.

“The statutes of the LORD are right…”

Not mostly right. Not culturally right. Not situationally right.

Right.

And because they are right the affect is powerful:

“…rejoicing the heart.”

Psalm 19 is a progression:

Verses 1–6 — God revealed in creation (general revelation)

Verses 7–11 — God revealed in Scripture (special revelation)

David moves from what we can see about God to what we must hear from God.

And in verses 7–9, he stacks descriptions:

Perfect

Sure

Right

Pure

Each one paired with a result:

Converting the soul

Making wise the simple

Rejoicing the heart

Enlightening the eyes

This is not abstract theology—this is experiential truth.

I. The Statutes of the LORD Are Right

A. What “Statutes” Means

“Statutes” refers to God’s prescribed principles, boundaries, and appointed ways of living—His revealed will in specific form.

Think of them as:

Not just general truth (like “God is good”)

But (like “forgive,” “give,” “walk uprightly,” “keep thyself pure”)applied truth

Statutes imply three qualitites:

They are authoritative.

The statutes of the Lord come from God Himself, carrying absolute authority over every life.

Psalms 1. The Glorious Character of God’s Word, Described Seven Ways (7–9)

God’s word and the commands contained within are right. They are morally right, they are practically right, and they are universally right. They are right because it is the revelation of a God who is holy, true, and always right.

They are specific.

They speak with clarity and precision, defining exactly how we are to think, live, and act.

They are binding.

They are not suggestions but binding commands, calling for full obedience from the heart.

What “Right” Means

Straight, level, aligned with reality

Morally perfect

Without deviation or corruption

God’s Word doesn’t adjust to us—we are meant to adjust to it.

The Human Problem

Man is not naturally “right”:

Our thinking is crooked

Our desires are disordered

Our standards are inconsistent

We don’t just do wrong—we are off-center.

I know also, my God, that thou triest the heart, and hast pleasure in uprightness. As for me, in the uprightness of mine heart I have willingly offered all these things: and now have I seen with joy thy people, which are present here, to offer willingly unto thee.

Do ye indeed speak righteousness, O congregation? Do ye judge uprightly, O ye sons of men?

Psalm 84:11 KJV 1900

For the Lord God is a sun and shield: The Lord will give grace and glory: No good thing will he withhold from them that walk uprightly.

Isaiah 26:7 KJV 1900

The way of the just is uprightness: Thou, most upright, dost weigh the path of the just.

Hosea 14:9 KJV 1900

Who is wise, and he shall understand these things? Prudent, and he shall know them? For the ways of the Lord are right, And the just shall walk in them: But the transgressors shall fall therein.

The Lord looked down from heaven upon the children of men, To see if there were any that did understand, and seek God. They are all gone aside, they are all together become filthy: There is none that doeth good, no, not one.

In otherwords there are those that desire uprightness and seek after God. But it will not last. we can’t sustain it.

There is the tension the Bible Gives us access to right, but we often desire rightness in fits and starts.

Uprightness fulfilled in Christ

The NT doesn’t lower the standard—it reveals how it is actually obtained.

Uprightness is not achieved—it is given (Justification)

Romans 3:10 KJV 1900

As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one:

Romans 3:21–22 KJV 1900

But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets; Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference:

Christ is the truly Upright One

Jesus is the only one who perfectly fits the OT description:

Perfect integrity

Perfect obedience

No deceit

Fully aligned with the Father

You could say:

Every Psalm praising “the upright” finds its fullest expression in Christ.

Uprightness is then produced in the believer (Sanctification)

The NT does speak very clearly about living uprightly:

— “…that we should live soberly, righteously, and godly…”Titus 2:11–12

— “blameless and harmless… in the midst of a crooked… nation”Philippians 2:15

— “created in righteousness and true holiness”Ephesians 4:24

So uprightness becomes:

Declared (justification)

Developed (sanctification)

OT Tension

“Be upright” — but man fails

Gospel Solution:

Christ is upright in your place

NT Reality:

You are:

Declared upright through faith

Transformed into uprightness by the Spirit

In the Old Testament, uprightness was the requirement.

In the Gospels, uprightness was revealed in a Person.

In the Epistles, uprightness is received by faith and reproduced by grace.

Live from identity, not for identity

You’re not trying to upright to be accepted become

You live upright because you accepted are

Here’s the Problem:

God’s Word is right

—we are not

when those two meet?

JOY

That sounds counterintuitive… unless we understand the heart.

Why the Statutes Rejoice the Heart

The Heart’s Deep Need for “Rightness”

Every human heart longs for alignment—even if they can’t articulate it.

We want things to make sense

We want life to feel stable

We want to know we’re not building wrong

That’s why:

Guilt disturbs us

Confusion frustrates us

Instability unsettles us

At the core, the human heart is asking:

“Am I right? Is this right? Is my life aligned with truth?”

But apart from God:

We guess

We compare

We justify

And none of that brings peace.

Look what God provides for our JOY:

Right Object

Truth that is fixed, not shifting

A standard that does not move

Like a compass that always points north— You don’t have to wonder anymore.

“You don’t define what’s right—God already has.”

Right Condition

It corrects the heart

It aligns the soul

Not just informing—but transforming.

How This Produces Joy

1. Joy in Understanding (Theoretical)

“Now I see clearly”

Confusion gives way to clarity

2. Joy in Obedience (Practical)

Living in alignment removes friction

Sin brings tension; righteousness brings harmony

3. Joy in Reflection (Experiential)

Looking back without regret

A clean conscience produces deep gladness

If a car is even slightly out of alignment:

It shakes

It wears down

It eventually breaks

But when it is aligned:

It runs smoothly

It lasts longer

It produces what it was designed to produce

The human heart is the same way.

When it is out of alignment with God’s truth:

Anxiety increases

Guilt lingers

Joy disappears

But when God’s Word brings it into alignment:

It runs the way it was created to run.

And that produces joy.

This flies in the face of the World’s PHilosophy - If you want happiness you have to do what you want all the time. Look out for you. Get yours. God says to the saint. Run to my word and you will see really uprightness and you can follow him to find real JOY.

1. STOP TRUSTING YOUR OWN STANDARD

Problem: Most people don’t reject truth—they just edit it.

Say it plainly:

Some of you are not rejecting the Bible… you’re revising it.

Practical Step:

Identify where you’ve been saying:one area

“I think…”

“I feel…”

“I don’t see anything wrong with…”

Then ask:

“What does God’s Word actually say about this?”

Examples:

Marriage → Am I aligning with Scripture or culture?

Speech → Am I justifying what God condemns?

Purity → Am I redefining what God already defined?

2. GET INTO THE WORD DAILY (NOT OCCASIONALLY)

Alignment doesn’t happen by accident—it requires constant correction.

Practical Step:

Give them something measurable:

Read Psalm 19 every day this week

Then add:

1 chapter of Proverbs (based on the date)

OR a short NT passage (John, Ephesians, etc.)

3. OBEY THE NEXT CLEAR THING GOD SHOWS YOU

Most people are not lacking knowledge—they are delaying obedience.

Practical Step:

Ask them:

“What is one thing God has already shown you that you haven’t obeyed yet?”

Then:

Make it specific

Make it immediate

Examples:

Forgive someone

Fix something in your home

Cut off a sinful habit

Start something you’ve been putting off spiritually

4. EXPECT CORRECTION—DON’T RESIST IT

When something is out of alignment, correction feels uncomfortable.

Practical Step:

Prepare them:

The Word will:

Confront you

Expose things

Challenge your thinking

5. MEASURE YOUR JOY AS A WARNING LIGHT

Tie it back to your machine illustration.

Practical Step:

Ask them to evaluate:

Is there:

Constant frustration?

Lingering guilt?

Lack of peace?

Don’t just treat the symptom—trace the cause.

“Where am I out of alignment with God’s Word?”

A lack of joy is often not a mystery—it’s a signal.

Invitation:

For the lost:

Stop trying to fix your life—receive the righteousness of Christ.

Stop living misaligned—return to the Word that restores your joy.For the believer:
