John 11:1–57 NRSVCE

Now a certain man was ill, Lazarus of Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha. Mary was the one who anointed the Lord with perfume and wiped his feet with her hair; her brother Lazarus was ill. So the sisters sent a message to Jesus, “Lord, he whom you love is ill.” But when Jesus heard it, he said, “This illness does not lead to death; rather it is for God’s glory, so that the Son of God may be glorified through it.” Accordingly, though Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus, after having heard that Lazarus was ill, he stayed two days longer in the place where he was. Then after this he said to the disciples, “Let us go to Judea again.” The disciples said to him, “Rabbi, the Jews were just now trying to stone you, and are you going there again?” Jesus answered, “Are there not twelve hours of daylight? Those who walk during the day do not stumble, because they see the light of this world. But those who walk at night stumble, because the light is not in them.” After saying this, he told them, “Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep, but I am going there to awaken him.” The disciples said to him, “Lord, if he has fallen asleep, he will be all right.” Jesus, however, had been speaking about his death, but they thought that he was referring merely to sleep. Then Jesus told them plainly, “Lazarus is dead. For your sake I am glad I was not there, so that you may believe. But let us go to him.” Thomas, who was called the Twin, said to his fellow disciples, “Let us also go, that we may die with him.” When Jesus arrived, he found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb four days. Now Bethany was near Jerusalem, some two miles away, and many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary to console them about their brother. When Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went and met him, while Mary stayed at home. Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died. But even now I know that God will give you whatever you ask of him.” Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise again.” Martha said to him, “I know that he will rise again in the resurrection on the last day.” Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Those who believe in me, even though they die, will live, and everyone who lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?” She said to him, “Yes, Lord, I believe that you are the Messiah, the Son of God, the one coming into the world.” When she had said this, she went back and called her sister Mary, and told her privately, “The Teacher is here and is calling for you.” And when she heard it, she got up quickly and went to him. Now Jesus had not yet come to the village, but was still at the place where Martha had met him. The Jews who were with her in the house, consoling her, saw Mary get up quickly and go out. They followed her because they thought that she was going to the tomb to weep there. When Mary came where Jesus was and saw him, she knelt at his feet and said to him, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.” When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who came with her also weeping, he was greatly disturbed in spirit and deeply moved. He said, “Where have you laid him?” They said to him, “Lord, come and see.” Jesus began to weep. So the Jews said, “See how he loved him!” But some of them said, “Could not he who opened the eyes of the blind man have kept this man from dying?” Then Jesus, again greatly disturbed, came to the tomb. It was a cave, and a stone was lying against it. Jesus said, “Take away the stone.” Martha, the sister of the dead man, said to him, “Lord, already there is a stench because he has been dead four days.” Jesus said to her, “Did I not tell you that if you believed, you would see the glory of God?” So they took away the stone. And Jesus looked upward and said, “Father, I thank you for having heard me. I knew that you always hear me, but I have said this for the sake of the crowd standing here, so that they may believe that you sent me.” When he had said this, he cried with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!” The dead man came out, his hands and feet bound with strips of cloth, and his face wrapped in a cloth. Jesus said to them, “Unbind him, and let him go.” Many of the Jews therefore, who had come with Mary and had seen what Jesus did, believed in him. But some of them went to the Pharisees and told them what he had done. So the chief priests and the Pharisees called a meeting of the council, and said, “What are we to do? This man is performing many signs. If we let him go on like this, everyone will believe in him, and the Romans will come and destroy both our holy place and our nation.” But one of them, Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, said to them, “You know nothing at all! You do not understand that it is better for you to have one man die for the people than to have the whole nation destroyed.” He did not say this on his own, but being high priest that year he prophesied that Jesus was about to die for the nation, and not for the nation only, but to gather into one the dispersed children of God. So from that day on they planned to put him to death. Jesus therefore no longer walked about openly among the Jews, but went from there to a town called Ephraim in the region near the wilderness; and he remained there with the disciples. Now the Passover of the Jews was near, and many went up from the country to Jerusalem before the Passover to purify themselves. They were looking for Jesus and were asking one another as they stood in the temple, “What do you think? Surely he will not come to the festival, will he?” Now the chief priests and the Pharisees had given orders that anyone who knew where Jesus was should let them know, so that they might arrest him.

The Fourth Gospel is anonymous. No name of its author is ever given in the text.

Internal evidence.

There is however, internal evidence as to the author of the Fourth Gospel being John the Son of Zebedee. (1) In Joh21:24 the word “them” refers to the disciples in the whole Gospel, not to just the last chapter. (2) “The disciple” in Joh21:24 was “the disciple whom Jesus loved” (Joh21:7). (3) From Joh21:7 it is certain that the disciple whom Jesus loved was one of seven persons mentioned in Joh21:2 (Simon Peter, Thomas, Nathanael, the two sons of Zebedee, and two unnamed disciples). (4) “The disciple whom Jesus loved” was seated next to the Lord at the Last Supper, and Peter motioned to him (Joh13:23-24). (5) He must have been one of the Twelve since only they were with the Lord at the Last Supper (cf. Mar14:17; Luk22:14). (6) In the Gospel, John was closely related to Peter and thus appears to be one of the inner three (cf. Joh20:2-10; Mar5:37-38; Mar9:2-3; Mar14:33). Since James, John’s brother, died in the year a.d. 44, he was not the author (Act12:2) because the Gospel of John was written much later. (7) “The other disciple” (Joh18:15-16) seems to refer to the “disciple whom Jesus loved” since he is called this in Joh20:2. (8) The “disciple whom Jesus loved” was at the cross (Joh19:26), and Joh19:35 seems to refer to him. (9) The author’s claim, “We have seen His glory” (Joh1:14), was the claim of someone who was an eyewitness (cf. 1Jn1:1-4).

Thus the author of the forth Gospel is John, one of the sons Zebedee and Peter’s Cousin.

External evidence

The external evidence is the traditional ascription of authorship which has been well known in the church. Polycarp (ca. a.d. 69-ca. a.d. 155) spoke of his contact with John. Irenaeus (ca. 130-ca. 200), the bishop of Lyons, heard Polycarp and testified that “John, the disciple of the Lord, who also had leaned upon His breast, had himself published a Gospel during his residence in Ephesus in Asia” (Against Heresies 3. 1). Polycrates, Clement of Alexandria, Tertullian, and other later fathers support this tradition. Eusebius was specific that Matthew and John of the apostles wrote the two Gospels which bear their specific names (The Ecclesiastical History 3. 24. (3-8). Date

It seems most probable that John wrote His Gospel before his banishment to the Isle of Patmos, where He wrote the Book of Revelation and the Gospel of Truth.

The date for the Gospel of John is unknow other than it was written when He resided in Ephesus in Asia!!!! The Apostle John moved to Ephesus with the Virgin Mary between 38 and 47 AD until His exile to Patmos in 95 through 96 AD. He lived, ministered, and died in Ephesus at an advanced age, returning there after his exile in (96) and dying around 100 AD!!!!

Structure

John writes to the Spiritual Truth of Jesus, the Neuma, YHWH Ruach and that we must be Baptized in the Spirit Wisdom, Understanding and Knowledge in all Manners of Work Exo 31:3, Wis 1:1-15, Wis 3:9, Wis 6:17-20, Wis 7:22-30, Wis 12:1, Sir 1:1-30, Joh 14:15-31, Joh 16:4-15!!!!

The key word in the Gospel of John is “believe” (pisteuō), which occurs 98 times. The Greek noun “faith” (pistis) does not occur. (A few times, however, the NIV translates the Gr. verb with the Eng. “put… faith in.”) The Greek verb pisteuō is frequently used in the present tense and in participial forms. Apparently John wanted to stress an active, continuous, and vital trust in Jesus. The book can be divided into the following main sections: Prologue (Joh1:1-18), Book of Signs (Jn1:19-Jn 12:50), Farewell Instructions (chaps. Jn 13-17), Passion and Resurrection (chaps. Jn 18-20), Epilogue (Joh21:1-25). The Prologue sets forth the theological introduction, which enables readers to understand that the words and deeds of Jesus are the words and deeds of God manifest in the flesh. The Book of Signs records seven miracles which reveal the Father’s glory in the Son. The miracles with their explanatory discourses progressively draw out two responses: faith, and unbelief and hardening in sin. Purpose

Some say that he wrote this gospel at Ephesus, at the request of the ministers of the several churches of Asia, in opposition to the heresy of Corinthus and the Ebionites, who held that our Lord was a mere man. In comparing John’s gospel with Matthew, Mark and Luke, we may observe, 1. That he relates what they had omitted; he brings up the rear, and his gospel is as the rearward or gathering host; it gleans up what they has passed by. 2. That he gives us more of the mystery of that of which the other evangelists gave us only the history. (Matthew Henry's Commentary)

The purpose of the Gospel of John, is stated in Joh20:31, was to record Jesus’ “signs” so that readers would come to believe in Him. That we know that YHWH Yeshua was Spirit and Man,
