“Shall Abide”

Psalm 91:1

Psalm 91:1 (NKJV) “He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.”

Introduction: The Question Is Not If—But Where You Live

Church, we are living in uncertain times. Systems are shaking. Economies fluctuate. Violence rises. Anxiety is everywhere. People are searching for safety in systems that cannot secure them.

But Psalm 91 does not begin with fear—it begins with position.

Not what you face… Not what you fear… Not what’s coming…

But where you dwell.

Because the text declares:

“He who dwells… shall abide…”

The promise is not automatic—it is conditional on location.

Key Thought:

If you make God your dwelling place, you will not just visit safety—you shall abide in it.

I. The Requirement of the Promise — “He Who Dwells”

The text does not say “he who visits”… It does not say “he who occasionally drops by”…

It says:

“He who dwells…”

To dwell means:

To remain

To settle

To take up residence

God is not offering protection to part-time believers—He’s offering covering to committed dwellers.

A storm shelter only works if you get inside and stay inside. You cannot stand outside in the rain and complain about getting wet.

Too many believers want the benefits of God without the burden of dwelling with God.

II. The Location of the Promise — “The Secret Place”

Notice the text says:

“The secret place of the Most High”

This is not a public space. This is not performative religion. This is not Sunday-only spirituality.

This is the hidden place:

Where prayer is real

Where worship is personal

Where communion is consistent

Some things only happen behind closed doors.

You don’t build intimacy in crowds—you build it in private spaces.

And the truth is: Public power is the result of private dwelling.

III. The Assurance of the Promise — “Shall Abide”

Here is the shouting point:

“Shall abide…”

Not might abide Not could abide Not hope to abide

But shall abide

This is divine certainty.

“Abide” means:

To remain continuously

To stay permanently

To live under constant covering

This is not a temporary blessing—this is a lifestyle of protection.

There’s a difference between a hotel stay and owning a home.

Some people treat God like a hotel—check in when trouble comes, check out when things get better.

But God says: I’m not your hotel—I’m your habitation.

IV. The Coverage of the Promise — “Under the Shadow”

The text says:

“Under the shadow of the Almighty”

The shadow represents:

Proximity

Protection

Covering

You cannot be in someone’s shadow unless you are close to them.

A child walking with their parent doesn’t worry about danger—they stay close enough to remain in their shadow.

The problem is not that God moved… The problem is we wandered out of the shadow.

V. The Power Behind the Promise — “The Almighty”

The text closes with:

“The Almighty” (El Shaddai)

This is the God who:

Has all power

Needs no help

Cannot be defeated

You are not abiding under weak protection—you are abiding under Omnipotence.

Some people are covered by insurance… Some are covered by security systems…

VI. The Reality of the Abiding Life

When you dwell and abide:

Fear loses its grip

Anxiety loses its voice

The enemy loses his authority

Because the rest of Psalm 91 unfolds the benefits:

Deliverance from traps (v.3)

Protection from danger (v.5–6)

Security in chaos (v.7)

Angelic covering (v.11)

But it all hinges on verse 1:

You must dwell to abide.

Practical Application

1. Make God Your Address

Not just your emergency contact—your permanent residence.

2. Develop a Secret Life with God

Prayer, worship, Word—daily.

3. Stay Close Enough for the Shadow

Don’t drift spiritually.

4. Speak the Promise

“I will say of the Lord…” (Psalm 91:2)

Closing Illustration

An umbrella does not stop the rain—but it covers you in it.

God does not always remove the storm—but He promises:

You can abide while the storm is still raging.

Now I don’t know who I’m preaching to this morning… But I came to tell somebody—you don’t have to visit God… you can live in God!

If you dwell in the secret place… You shall abide under the shadow!

When trouble comes—you shall abide! When fear rises—you shall abide! When the enemy attacks—you shall abide!

I hear the Word saying: A thousand may fall at your side… Ten thousand at your right hand… But it shall not come nigh thee!

Because you’re not just anywhere… You’re under the shadow!

And I feel like preaching it now—

Under His shadow I’m safe! Under His shadow I’m covered! Under His shadow I’m protected!

Can’t nobody do me like Jesus! Can’t nobody keep me like the Lord!

If you know you’re abiding… If you know you’re dwelling… If you know you’re covered…

Somebody shout YES LORD! Somebody shout I SHALL ABIDE! 🙌🏾
