INTRODUCTION
Story of Hurricane Helene
We went without power for 5 days
When we got power to our Mini Split AC
One little thing made all the difference
Who knew one thing could change everything
TENSION
It’s easy to feel like our lives don’t actually change anything
Culture often pushes us to either:
Blend in  (don’t stand out, don’t offend)
Back away  (avoid the mess altogether)
Many people believe:
“My faith is personal, not public”
“I’ll just try to be a good person”
The result:
Faith becomes private instead of powerful
We underestimate the influence we’ve been given
TRUTH
Matthew 5:13–16 “You are the salt of the earth. But what good is salt if it has lost its flavor? Can you make it salty again? It will be thrown out and trampled underfoot as worthless. “You are the light of the world—like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden. No one lights a lamp and then puts it under a basket. Instead, a lamp is placed on a stand, where it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father.”
Jesus defines our identity before our activity
“You are the salt… You are the light…”
Not something we strive to become, it’s who we are
Salt preserves and enhances
In the ancient world, salt:
Slowed decay
Brought out flavor
As followers of Jesus:
We push back against brokenness
We bring out the goodness of God in everyday life
Light reveals and guides
Light doesn’t argue, it shines
It:
Exposes what’s hidden
A few nights ago, I got up in the middle of the night
Tripped on the corner of my bed and fell
I very rarely trip in the light of day
Shows the way forward
People don’t need louder voices, they need brighter lights
Influence flows from identity, not effort
We don’t force impact, we live from who we are in Christ
But identity always leads to intentional action
Salt and Light are tangible choices
This is where it gets practical:
Being salt and light is not abstract, it’s visible
Two of the clearest expressions:
Serving
Stepping into someone else’s need
Using your time and energy to lift others
Saying: “I see you, and I’m here to help”
Giving Generously
Leveraging what God has given you for others
Breaking the grip of selfishness and scarcity
Saying: “What I have isn’t just for me”
You don’t become salt and light by knowing more—you become salt and light by living it out.
APPLICATION
1. Identify your space
Your workplace
Your home
Your school
Your neighborhood
Your Church
Where has God already placed you to influence?
2. Choose a tangible expression this week
Be Salt (Preserve & Enhance):
Encourage someone who’s discouraged
Step into a difficult situation instead of avoiding it
Serve where there is need (church, community, family)
Be Light (Reveal & Guide):
Speak truth with grace
Live differently in a way that points to Jesus
Be visible about your faith in a natural, authentic way
3. Take one intentional step
Serve:
Sign up to serve
Help a neighbor
Show up where you’re needed
Give Generously:
Give financially
Meet a specific need
Practice open-handed living
Final Line:
When you serve and when you give, you are putting the Kingdom on display
