My Busyness as a student — how do I make time for to grow in my faith?
Luke 10:38–42 NLT
As Jesus and the disciples continued on their way to Jerusalem, they came to a certain village where a woman named Martha welcomed him into her home. Her sister, Mary, sat at the Lord’s feet, listening to what he taught. But Martha was distracted by the big dinner she was preparing. She came to Jesus and said, “Lord, doesn’t it seem unfair to you that my sister just sits here while I do all the work? Tell her to come and help me.” But the Lord said to her, “My dear Martha, you are worried and upset over all these details! There is only one thing worth being concerned about. Mary has discovered it, and it will not be taken away from her.”
Observe two sets of priorities:
Mary: spending time with Jesus first before addressing life’s demands.
Martha: addressing life’s demands before spending time with Jesus.
Jesus’ Point: Busyness, even when directed towards good things, can become a spiritual liability when it replaces attentiveness to Jesus.
Compare to Student life — How do your priorities shape your life?
How does this impact their lives?
Martha (prioritize tasks):worried and upset over all these details” Caught up in the practical demands of life; anxiety-driven and has many concerns;
Anxiety—rooted in unfulfilled longings/needs.
Emotional Needs: lack of secure attachment, validation, approval, or a sense of control.
Safety and Security: viewing the world as dangerous, triggering a constant, protective state of anxiety.
Purpose: A lack of fulfillment or direction can cause "purpose anxiety," which is a persistent worry about meaning.
Martha: has an underlying issue—not busyness, it’s brokenness.
Students have underlying issues (Anger, loneliness, depressed, battle with lust, addiction)
Mary (prioritized Jesus): "There is only one thing worth being concerned about, Mary has discovered it…” — her fundamental need is taken care of.
Jesus fulfills our emotional needs, security, and clarifies our purpose.
Mary: Spiritual orientation that fuels her life.
John 15:4 NLT
Remain in me, and I will remain in you. For a branch cannot produce fruit if it is severed from the vine, and you cannot be fruitful unless you remain in me.
What would you like to characterize your life?
Psalm 63:1–8 “O God, you are my God; I earnestly search for you. My soul thirsts for you; my whole body longs for you in this parched and weary land where there is no water. I have seen you in your sanctuary and gazed upon your power and glory. Your unfailing love is better than life itself; how I praise you! I will praise you as long as I live, lifting up my hands to you in prayer. You satisfy me more than the richest feast. I will praise you with songs of joy. I lie awake thinking of you, meditating on you through the night. Because you are my helper, I sing for joy in the shadow of your wings. I cling to you; your strong right hand holds me securely.”
How will you cling to God and prioritize him?
