Prophecy of Enoch (vv. 14-15)
Prophecy of Enoch (vv. 14-15)
The book of 1 Enoch is nearly universally accepted to be excluded from the canon of scripture
Referencing this section does not mean that Jude was sponsoring the book, nor does it mean that Jude is not canonical
In the same way we note truth in secular sayings (the journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step -Tao Te Ching) (Acts 17:28)
This may have been a text his adversaries used, showing the flaws of their belief with their own religious texts
God will come with a myriad of His holy ones, as is noted elsewhere in scripture (Deut. 33:2)
This will be a glorious, powerful, and well witnessed event
Ungodliness is a theme used through the rest of the citation -> having established the ungodliness of false teachers, we see the disgust which God has towards them and their actions
He will judge the ungodly -> This notes the target of His judgement
Of their ungodly deeds -> this is why they are judged
Any teacher that teaches you to be contrary to God in any way is one we must be wary of and contend against (1 Pet. 1:13-21)
Which they have ungodly committed (done in an ungodly way) -> even the intents of their action were in rebellion to God (as they nearly always are)
There are some who may accidentally sin without ill intent, but sin is the result of ungodly intention
Ignorance is a product of not showing God enough honor to know Him
And the hard speeches which ungodly sinners have spoken against Him -> this solidifies the hardness of their hearts
In other words, we contend against those who will be destroyed for their ungodliness, and we need to work to stop the spread of that ungodliness
Beware of the Flattering People (vv. 16-19)
Beware of the Flattering People (vv. 16-19)
They are murmurers and complainers walking after their own lusts -> a clear picture of those in the wilderness who led many to destruction
They flatter others by great swelling words for their own gain -> whether the words be intelligent, hostile, validating, or tender, they resonate with fleshly people
We don’t identify these people based on how smart they sound or how they make us feel, but on the validity of what they say
We were warned these would come, and they would separate themselves by being sensual and not having the Spirit
If they don’t have the Spirit, they have nothing -> only the seed of God’s word yields fruit!
This gives us great indication on how to sense the Spirit working through someone -> the truth!
