Text:
They answered him, We be Abraham’s seed, and were never in bondage to any man: how sayest thou, Ye shall be made free? Jesus answered them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whosoever committeth sin is the servant of sin. And the servant abideth not in the house for ever: but the Son abideth ever. If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.
John 8:33-
Introduction
Introduction
Jesus has just finished preaching that he is the “living water” and that he is the “light of the world”. We also looked at his statement in verse 31 about being a true disciple. Jesus said that being a true disciple involves a continued, determined & purposeful walk. This continued walk is a walk in the Word of God and it is a walk that has fruit. The byproduct of walking with God is knowing truth and the result of knowing truth is freedom!
Illustration: Newtons third law states that for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. For example if you put a bunch of rocket fuel in a tank and then compress that fuel through pressure and ignite it, the energy created will cause the rocket to move. This is really not Newton’s law, it’s God’s law! Following God allows us to know truth and knowing truth brings freedom!
All of this leads us to the question....freedom from what?
The great problem facing our world is not: hunger, genetically modified crops, homelessness, nuclear weapons, global warming..cooling…change…, lack of education, poverty, drug addition, teen pregnancy, abortion, liberal politics, high taxes, illegal immigration....
The real problem in our world is sin!
We should ask ourselves an important question as we look at this subject. What exactly is sin?
Sin defined: The voluntary departure of a moral agent from a known rule of rectitude or duty, prescribed by God; any voluntary transgression of the divine law, or violation of a divine command; a wicked act; iniquity. Websters 18:28 Dictionary
Sin defined:
Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law.
Declaration: Sin is the real problem - it is in fact the root of all problems
Preposition: When was the last time we considered our own sin in light of God’s Word?
Transition: I want us to consider 4 important aspects on the subject of the truth about Sin.
I. The Problem of Sin (v.34)
I. The Problem of Sin (v.34)
“...whosoever committeth sin is the servant of sin”
A. Sin is Diverse
A. Sin is Diverse
“whosoever”
The problem of sin is a universal one
The problem of sin is a universal one
For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;
One must admit the problem “we be Abrahams seed and were never in bondage to any man”
Illustration: Lifetime Risk of Developing Cancer: Approximately 38.5 percent of men and women will be diagnosed with cancer of any site at some point during their lifetime, based on 2012-2014 data. All of us know someone who has died from or been touched by the disease.
All of us know someone who has died from or been touched by the disease. The reality is there is a far more prevalent problem, the problem of sin.
The reality is there is a far more prevalent problem, the problem of sin.
Who can say, I have made my heart clean, I am pure from my sin?
B. Sin is Destructive
B. Sin is Destructive
“committeth sin”
Just look where these self righteous Pharisees had come
Look at Adam and Eve, Cain and Able… Noah’s day
And God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. And it repented the Lord that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him at his heart. And the Lord said, I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth; both man, and beast, and the creeping thing, and the fowls of the air; for it repenteth me that I have made them.
It destroys....Marriages, Families, Children, Husbands, Fathers, Wives, Mothers, Grandparents
It destroys....Marriages, Families, Children, Husbands, Fathers, Wives, Mothers, Grandparents
50% of marriages end in divorce - although that number has subsided some because people are just living together and forgoing the marriage all together
Mass shootings are on the rise
Teen pregnancy and abortion
Children out of control with no respect for authority
Illustration: Radio personality Paul Harvey tells the story of how an Eskimo kills a wolf.
The account is grisly, yet it offers fresh insight into the consuming, self-destructive nature of sin. "First, the Eskimo coats his knife blade with animal blood and allows it to freeze. Then he adds another layer of blood, and another, until the blade is completely concealed by frozen blood. "Next, the hunter fixes his knife in the ground with the blade up. When a wolf follows his sensitive nose to the source of the scent and discovers the bait, he licks it, tasting the fresh frozen blood. He begins to lick faster, more and more vigorously, lapping the blade until the keen edge is bare. Feverishly now, harder and harder the wolf licks the blade in the arctic night.
So great becomes his craving for blood that the wolf does not notice the razor-sharp sting of the naked blade on his own tongue, nor does he recognize the instant at which his insatiable thirst is being satisfied by his OWN warm blood. His carnivorous appetite just craves more--until the dawn finds him dead in the snow!"
As a dog returneth to his vomit, So a fool returneth to his folly.
C. Sin is a Dominating
C. Sin is a Dominating
“the servant of sin”
Satan has deceived the whole world into believing that sin brings freedom
The Bible is too restrictive, too restraining, too narrow
His own iniquities shall take the wicked himself, And he shall be holden with the cords of his sins.
The main problem with sin is that it enslaves people like a prison
II. The Penalty of Sin
II. The Penalty of Sin
“the servant abideth not in the house forever”
You might be doing alright today but someday there will be a payday!
Illustration: Before the emancipation of slaves in the south, a person under such condition could be sold off at any time. Can you imagine that? One day your son or daughter is sold to the highest bidder and a family is separated.
Christ was illustrating that a soul in sin will be separated from the family unless he becomes a son!
The most sobering aspect of sin is that it has an ultimate price
For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:
And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.
Illustration: I was just talking with a man recently about forgiveness of sin and the gift of eternal life. His comment to me was that he didn't want to go to heaven because all of his friends would be in hell.
B. The eternal penalty
B. The eternal penalty
Hell was a place prepared for Satan and his angels, but men go there when they choose to pay for their sin themselves
Hell was a place prepared for Satan and his angels but men go there when they choose to pay for their sin themselves
Illustration: I was just talking with a man recently about forgiveness of sin and the gift of eternal life. His comment to me was that he didn't want to go to heaven because all of his friends would be in hell.
This is exactly the opposite of what we find in the Bible
Hell was a place prepared for Satan and his angels, but men go there when they choose to pay for their sin themselves
We don't hear much about hell these days especially from preachers.
C. Sin is Progressive
C. Sin is Progressive
i. Hell is factual (not some state of mind)
Just look where these self righteous Pharisees had come
ii. Hell is felt
* he could see “lift up his eyes”, he could speak “have mercy on me”, he had thirst “cool my tongue”, he could feel the heat “I am tormented in this flame”, he could remember events of his life “remember that thou in thy lifetime”, he had concern for his family “I have five brethren”
iii. Hell is frightful & full of fire
And shall cast them into a furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth.
iv. Hell is forever (there is no escape)
And beside all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed: so that they which would pass from hence to you cannot; neither can they pass to us, that would come from thence.
iii. Hell is frightful
And shall cast them into a furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth.
D. Sin is a Prison
D. Sin is a Prison
“the servant of sin”
Satan has deceived the whole world into believing that sin brings freedom
The Bible is too restrictive, too restraining, too narrow
III. The Perception of Sin (v.33)
III. The Perception of Sin (v.33)
“we be Abraham’s seed, and were never in bondage to any man....”
Illustration: Jail & Prison ministry - everyone I met was innocent
Never in bondage? - what about the 400 years in Egypt?
What about the period of the Judges?
What about the Assyrian and Babylonian captivity?
What about the Roman rule they are living under while Christ is speaking these words?
How could they forget such an extensive period of time?
These Jews were deluded in their mind! How about us?? Are we being honest with ourselves and with God?
IV. The Pardon for Sin (v.36)
IV. The Pardon for Sin (v.36)
“if the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed”
If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.
Religion has tried to solve the problem - all religion is........ do..... or it is done!
Philosophy has tried to solve the problem - you cant think your way out of sin!
Politics have tried to solve the problem - we just need better leadership - communism, socialism -popularity is on the rise
Psychiatrists have tried to solve the problem- how many children are on drugs in the country?
Physicians have tried to solve the problem- they have diagnosed sin as a disease
The sad reality is that man is looking around every corner to solve a sin problem, a problem that only God can solve!
Verily, verily, I say unto you, If a man keep my saying, he shall never see death.
John
Illustration: A preacher of days gone by was having an evangelistic campaign on the island of Jamaica. One day there arose a storm at sea and off the coast of the island a ship found itself in distress. It sent out an SOS signal to the land, and just as the sun was going down a lifeboat put off from shore, braving the perilous waves, in a desperate race against time, to see if the sailors on that stricken ship could be saved. Darkness came on, and all night long on the island, people watched and waited to hear the news. The next morning he set off for town to see what had happened. He did not have to wait long. A newsboy was standing on the corner of the street selling newspapers. Right across the front page, in a banner headline was the one word, saved.
The preacher was curious. He bought a paper, pointed to the word saved, and said to the little boy, "Say, Sonny, what does that word mean?" The boy looked at him in astonishment. "Why, mister," he said, "it means those people never died!"
That is what can be said of those who leave this life, for the shores of eternity, trusting in Christ for salvation. "Those people never died!" We have Jesus’ word for that.
Come now, and let us reason together, saith the Lord: Though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; Though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.
A. It is a complete pardon
A. It is a complete pardon
“though your sins”
Come now, and let us reason together, saith the Lord: Though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; Though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.
B. It is an eternal pardon
B. It is an eternal pardon
“eternal life”
My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me: And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand. My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father’s hand. I and my Father are one.
C. Its an individual pardon
C. Its an individual pardon
“thou shalt confess…believe in thine heart”
That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.
Conclusion
Conclusion

Problem of Sin - Sin is diverse, destructive & dominating - its a serious problem indeed
Penalty of Sin - separation from God forever in a place called hell
Perception of Sin - we can so easily deceive ourselves
Pardon for Sin - Jesus offers complete forgiveness from sin
Have you recieved the pardon for sin?
