Origins of Mother's Day
The custom of honoring mothers goes back to the 17th-century England, its called “Mothering Sunday”.
In the US
It was a woman named Anna M. Jarvis who first suggested the national observance of an annual day honoring all mothers because she had loved her own mother so dearly. At a memorial service for her mother on May 10, 1908, Miss Jarvis gave a carnation (her mother’s favorite flower) to each person who attended.
Within the next few years, the idea of a day to honor mothers gained popularity, and Mother’s Day was observed in a number of large cities in the U.S. On May 9, 1914, by an act of Congress, President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed the second Sunday in May as Mother’s Day.
He established the day as a time for "public expression of our love and reverence for the mothers of our country."
A SON’s MOST SACRED MEMORIES OF HIS MOTHER:
1. One who really cared for his happiness in life.
2. One who really cared for his soul.
3. The most unselfish person he ever knew.
4. The blessed doctor in times of sickness.
5. The queen of the kitchen—none can cook like she can.
6. I’m 50 and she is still my mother.
THE POWER OF A MOTHER’S LOVE?
1. World famous painter—Benjamin West: “Mother’s kiss made me an artist.”
2. St. Augustine: “Mother’s prayers made me a saint.”
3. Americans may say: “Give us more Abraham Lincolns!” Rather let us say: “Give us more godly mothers!” for Lincoln said: “All I am or ever hope to be, I owe to my angel mother.”
IN HIS MINISTRY, JESUS GAVE MUCH ATTENTION TO MOTHERS.
1. He healed the mother of Peter’s wife
14 When Jesus arrived at Peter’s house, Peter’s mother-in-law was sick in bed with a high fever. 15 But when Jesus touched her hand, the fever left her. Then she got up and prepared a meal for him.
Isn’t that what mothers do. Even when they don’t feel 100% they just keep going.
2. He restored a mother’s son from the dead
12 A funeral procession was coming out as he approached the village gate. The young man who had died was a widow’s only son, and a large crowd from the village was with her. 13 When the Lord saw her, his heart overflowed with compassion. “Don’t cry!” he said. 14 Then he walked over to the coffin and touched it, and the bearers stopped. “Young man,” he said, “I tell you, get up.” 15 Then the dead boy sat up and began to talk! And Jesus gave him back to his mother.
3. He healed a Canaanite mother’s daughter
22 And a Canaanite woman from that region came out and began to cry out, saying, “Have mercy on me, Lord, Son of David; my daughter is cruelly demon-possessed.”
28 Then Jesus said to her, “O woman, your faith is great; it shall be done for you as you wish.” And her daughter was healed at once.
4. At the cross He took care of His Mother
25 Standing near the cross were Jesus’ mother, and his mother’s sister, Mary (the wife of Clopas), and Mary Magdalene. 26 When Jesus saw his mother standing there beside the disciple he loved, he said to her, “Dear woman, here is your son.” 27 And he said to this disciple, “Here is your mother.” And from then on this disciple took her into his home.
Christ is moved by the incredible faith of a mother , as is evident in the scriptures previous.
HOW DID MOSES GET HIS START AS A MAN OF GOD?
Consider the story of Moses, who was saved from death as a baby by his mother Jochebed. She hid her baby for 3 months , made a floating papyrus basket and by faith released him close to Pharoahs daughter.
Her bravery and faith paved the way for his destiny as a leader of God’s people.
This reminds us that a mother’s love goes beyond mere care; it often involves profound sacrifices.
HOW DID SAMUEL GET HIS START AS A MAN OF GOD?
1. Mother’s prayers—“For this child I prayed,”
27 For this child I prayed, and the Lord has granted me my petition that I made to him.
2. She dressed him for the church services,
18 Now Samuel was ministering before the Lord, as a boy wearing a linen ephod. 19 And his mother would make him a little robe and bring it to him from year to year when she would come up with her husband to offer the yearly sacrifice.
3. “The child was young” when she took him,
24 Now when she had weaned him, she took him up with her, with a three-year-old bull and one ephah of flour and a jug of wine, and brought him to the house of the Lord in Shiloh, although the child was young.
4. She recognized God’s ownership of the child,
28 “So I have also dedicated him to the Lord; as long as he lives he is dedicated to the Lord.” And he worshiped the Lord there.
5. Hannah rejoiced over this arrangement with God,
1 Then Hannah prayed: “My heart rejoices in the Lord! The Lord has made me strong. Now I have an answer for my enemies; I rejoice because you rescued me. 2 No one is holy like the Lord! There is no one besides you; there is no Rock like our God.
3 “Stop acting so proud and haughty! Don’t speak with such arrogance! For the Lord is a God who knows what you have done; he will judge your actions. 4 The bow of the mighty is now broken, and those who stumbled are now strong.
5 Those who were well fed are now starving, and those who were starving are now full. The childless woman now has seven children, and the woman with many children wastes away. 6 The Lord gives both death and life; he brings some down to the grave but raises others up.
7 The Lord makes some poor and others rich; he brings some down and lifts others up. 8 He lifts the poor from the dust and the needy from the garbage dump. He sets them among princes, placing them in seats of honor. For all the earth is the Lord’s, and he has set the world in order.
9 “He will protect his faithful ones, but the wicked will disappear in darkness. No one will succeed by strength alone. 10 Those who fight against the Lord will be shattered. He thunders against them from heaven; the Lord judges throughout the earth. He gives power to his king; he increases the strength of his anointed one.” 11 Then Elkanah returned home to Ramah without Samuel. And the boy served the Lord by assisting Eli the priest.
HOW DID TIMOTHY GET HIS START AS A MAN OF GOD
3. Where did Timothy get his start? “First in thy grandmother … and in thy mother,” 2 Tim. 1:5
5 For I am mindful of the sincere faith within you, which first dwelt in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice, and I am sure that it is in you as well.
Conclusion
Mothers you are important !
Satan’s attack on mothers is never ending.
If it wasn’t for mothers you would not be here today.
13 For You formed my inward parts; You wove me in my mother’s womb. 14 I will give thanks to You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Wonderful are Your works, And my soul knows it very well.
Mom’s what you form in your womb could change the world. AMEN.
You wonder why Christian moms are pro-life. It is because we value life. We value moms and their children AMEN.
We would like to take time today and pray for mothers
Maybe your a mom who feels like you could use some support. We want to be here for you.
Maybe you are like Mary scripture says, “she had to ponder things in her heart “about her son. We pray for wisdom and discernment.
Do we have any pondering moms here today.
Baptism.
