Psalm Reading

Psalm 82:1–4 “God has taken his place in the divine council; in the midst of the gods he holds judgment: “How long will you judge unjustly and show partiality to the wicked? John 8:39–47 ESV
They answered him, “Abraham is our father.” Jesus said to them, “If you were Abraham’s children, you would be doing the works Abraham did, but now you seek to kill me, a man who has told you the truth that I heard from God. This is not what Abraham did. You are doing the works your father did.” They said to him, “We were not born of sexual immorality. We have one Father—even God.” Jesus said to them, “If God were your Father, you would love me, for I came from God and I am here. I came not of my own accord, but he sent me. Why do you not understand what I say? It is because you cannot bear to hear my word. You are of your father the devil, and your will is to do your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks out of his own character, for he is a liar and the father of lies. But because I tell the truth, you do not believe me. Which one of you convicts me of sin? If I tell the truth, why do you not believe me? Whoever is of God hears the words of God. The reason why you do not hear them is that you are not of God.”

Sermon

The Truth Will set you free
slavery to Sin
Jesus “the Truth” will set the slave free
John 8:31–32 ESV
If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples
make it rule your life
John 8:39 ESV
They answered him, “Abraham is our father.” ...
Jesus’ initial veiled implication was angering these “Jews”
They had quickly in v33 angrily replied that they were descendants of Abraham
To be his spirirtual decendants is to be spiritually free and in not need of being delivered
They regarded themselves as spiritual offspring of Abraham
John 8:38 “I speak of what I have seen with my Father, and you do what you have heard from your father.””
John 8:39–40 ESV
… Jesus said to them, “If you were Abraham’s children, you would be doing the works Abraham did, but now you seek to kill me, a man who has told you the truth that I heard from God. This is not what Abraham did.
figures of speech and irony about in this lively discourse
genuine prophets of the true God were at times validated by performing miracles
“If you were Abraham’s children, you would be doing the works Abraham did”
“but now you seek to kill me, a man who has told you the truth that I heard from God. This is not what Abraham did.”
They had a heart problem - no circumscision of the heart
Abraham did the complete opposite
John 8:41 ESV
You are doing the works your father did.” They said to him, “We were not born of sexual immorality. We have one Father—even God.”
“You are doing the works your father did.”
The implication is clear
Their father is someone who encourages them to kill God’s only Son
They said to him, “We were not born of sexual immorality. We have one Father—even God.”
Malachi 2:10 “Have we not all one Father? Has not one God created us? Why then are we faithless to one another, profaning the covenant of our fathers?”
They protest against Jesus’ insinuations
They affirm they know who their father is, and even claim to be Children of God
So often those who oppose God claim to be his children
Their reply also highlights the less than veiled accusation against Jesus being conceived outside of wedlock.
Why? because he questioned their potives
John 8:42 ESV
Jesus said to them, “If God were your Father, you would love me, for I came from God and I am here. I came not of my own accord, but he sent me.
“If God were your Father, you would love me, for I came from God and I am here.”
If they were of God, they would love Him
They would love those he sends
They would love His Son
Love is shown through obedience
“I came not of my own accord, but he sent me.”
Gen 3:15 - “the seed of the woman”
Isaiah 7:14 - “a wirgin shall conceive”
Jeremiah 31:22 - “a virgin shall encompass a man”
Psalm 2 - “born as the Son of God”
John 8:43 ESV
Why do you not understand what I say? It is because you cannot bear to hear my word.
Their hearts are hardened against God’s Miracles
“You cannot” ...
John 3:3 “Jesus answered him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.””
John 3:5 “Jesus answered, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.”
John 5:44 “How can you believe, when you receive glory from one another and do not seek the glory that comes from the only God?”
John 6:44 “No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him. And I will raise him up on the last day.”
Sin ...
blinds the slave
deafens the slave
hardens the hearts of the slave
John 8:44 ESV
You are of your father the devil, and your will is to do your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks out of his own character, for he is a liar and the father of lies.
Jesus hits them with the truth
“You are of your father the devil, and your will is to do your father’s desires”
“He was a murderer from the beginning”
Satan - plunged the human race into the ocean of death, physical, spiritual, and eternal
“does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him”
“When he lies, he speaks out of his own character, for he is a liar and the father of lies.”
John 8:45 ESV
But because I tell the truth, you do not believe me.
Truth - universe of ideas which corresponds with reality
man’s total depravity and natural inability
the plan of God for his salvation
the sending of the Son to merit that salvation
the punishment for those who reject the Son, etc.
Man’s proud heart does not welcome this truth, for it reveals his damnable character and lost condition
Being children of the father of lies, they reject the truth
John 8:46–47 ESV
Which one of you convicts me of sin? If I tell the truth, why do you not believe me? Whoever is of God hears the words of God. The reason why you do not hear them is that you are not of God.”
Jesus anticipates the objection: “You do not speak the truth; hence, you cannot expect us to believe you.”
“Which one of you convicts me of sin?”
“If I tell the truth, why do you not believe me?”
“Whoever is of God hears the words of God.”
“The reason why you do not hear them is that you are not of God.”
They fail to answer his questions
Stunned
Lies result in self condemnation
Truth was unbearable to them to admit
