The modern American holiday of Mother's Day was first celebrated in 1908, when Anna Jarvis held a memorial for her mother in Grafton, West Virginia. Her campaign to make "Mother's Day" a recognized holiday in the United States began in 1905, the year her beloved mother, Ann Reeves Jarvis, died. Anna’s mission was to honor her own mother by continuing work she had started and to set aside a day to honor mothers, "the person who has done more for you than anyone in the world." Anna's mother, Ann Jarvis, was a peace activist who had cared for wounded soldiers on both sides of the Civil War and created Mother’s Day Work Clubs to address public health issues.
Due to the campaign efforts of Anna Jarvis, several states officially recognized Mother's Day, the first in 1910 being West Virginia, Jarvis’ home state. In 1914 Woodrow Wilson signed the proclamation creating Mother’s Day, the second Sunday in May, as a national holiday to honor mothers. In a thank-you note to Wilson Jarvis wrote of a “great Home Day of our country for sons and daughters to honor their mothers and fathers and homes in a way that will perpetuate family ties and give emphasis to true home life.”
Although Jarvis was successful in founding Mother's Day she soon became resentful of the commercialization and angry that companies would profit from the holiday. By the early 1920's, Hallmark and other companies had started selling Mother's Day cards. Jarvis became so embittered by what she saw as misinterpretation and exploitation that she protested and even tried to rescind Mother's Day. The holiday she had worked so hard for was supposed to be about sentiment, not profit. Jarvis organized boycotts and threatened lawsuits to try to stop the commercialization. She crashed a candymakers convention in Philadelphia in 1923. Two years later she protested at a confab of the American War Mothers, which raised money by selling carnations, the flower associated with Mother’s Day, and was arrested for disturbing the peace.
Jarvis' holiday was adopted by other countries and it is now celebrated all over the world. In this tradition, each person offers a gift, card, or remembrance toward their mothers, grandmothers, and/ or maternal figure on mother's day. The original intention, however, was to appreciate and honor your mother by writing a personal letter, by hand, expressing love and gratitude.
I am sure God feels the same way that Ana Jarvis felt about the original intent of what the Church is suppose to be! And what marriage is suppose to be!!
Ephesians 6:1–3 ESV
1 Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. 2 “Honor your father and mother” (this is the first commandment with a promise), 3 “that it may go well with you and that you may live long in the land.”
This is not a once a year but a daily; moment by moment lifestyle God desires for us.
A Word to the Husbands
Ephesians 5:25–33 ESV
25 Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her, 26 that he might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, 27 so that he might present the church to himself in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish. 28 In the same way husbands should love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. 29 For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ does the church, 30 because we are members of his body. 31 “Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.” 32 This mystery is profound, and I am saying that it refers to Christ and the church. 33 However, let each one of you love his wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respects her husband.
The #1 need in a woman’s life is Security
This is accomplished in 4 ways
Emotional Security (communication, this goes Beyond what most men are comfortable with)
Woman- "How was your day? Man- Fine!"
Colossians 3:19 ESV
19 Husbands, love your wives, and do not be harsh with them.
God caress how you talk to his daughter!
How you talk to her fosters emotional baggage or emotional security!
2. Physical Security (affection, Our wives should never suffer from ADD ( attention deficient disorder))
God cares how you handle his daughter!
You are stronger for many reasons it one of those is to provide a place of physical security!
Not physical threatenings.
3. Financial Security (Financially have a covenant 1.No one has complete control 2.Have a safe spend agreement 3.Accountability)
God cares how you two manage your resources.
4. Spiritual Security. (As Christ loves the Church so the husband should love his wife, and he should be able to say as Christ said. )
Men true leadership is not rooted in “I am the King of my Castle and you must submit”.
True leadership starts with how you lead in the Word and in Service!!!
"I will never leave you nor forsake you")
Men we are to Love like Christ !
Ephesians 5:1–2 ESV
1 Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children. 2 And walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.
Men are you giving yourself up (DIEING TO YOURSELF) for her benefit?
Are you the lead SERVANT of your home or is she??
Are you imitating or limiting Christ?
Men what is the AROMA of your LOVE?
1 Peter 3:7 ESV
7 Likewise, husbands, live with your wives in an understanding way, showing honor to the woman as the weaker vessel, since they are heirs with you of the grace of life, so that your prayers may not be hindered.
Showing Honor: Not only are we as Children to honor our parents; men we are called to honor our wives as well!!
1 Peter–Jude (King James Version) L. Understand Your Wife, 3:7

The word honor means to value; to esteem; to prize; to count as precious. A husband is to count his wife as a precious gem, as a prize of extreme value. He is to highly esteem her, set her up on a pedestal before his very eyes.

1 Peter–Jude (King James Version) L. Understand Your Wife, 3:7

Husbands are to honor their wives by loving and tenderly taking care of them. They are to look after and care for them with warmth and tenderness, treating them in the most precious of spirits and esteeming them ever so highly.
