Father, we thank You for Your Word. We thank You that You are a God who speaks, warns, corrects, and calls. Open our hearts today. Give us ears to hear and courage to obey. Make us faithful watchmen in our homes, our churches, and our communities. Let us not be silent where You have called us to speak. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
The Weight Of Responsibility: There are some passages in Scripture that comfort us. There are others that confront us. Tis is one of those passages.
Ezekiel 3:12-21 is not light reading. It is weighty. It is is serious. It is a passage about responsibility. It is about the kind of accountability that makes you stop and examine your own heart.
God calls Ezekiel a watchman. Not a celebrity. Not a performer. Not an entertainer. A watchman. A man responsible to watch, to listen, and to warn. And this truth is not just for prophets. It speaks to parents, pastors, leaders, friends and every believer who carries truth. Because truth creates responsibility.
If we know the danger and stay silent - that silence matters. This message asks us: Have we been faithful watchmen? Or have we been silent where God told us to speak?
Then the Spirit lifted me up, and I heard a great rumbling sound behind me, “Blessed be the glory of the Lord in His place.”
And I heard the sound of the wings of the living beings touching one another and the sound of the wheels beside them, even a great rumbling sound.
1. The Glory Of God Still Moves
1. The Glory Of God Still Moves
Even after the calling… the glory remains. Ezekiel hears again the wings, the wheels, the movement of heaven. This matters. Because God does not just call us and leave us. He sends His presence with us. The same glory that overwhelmed him now strengthens him.
Calling without God’s presence becomes religion. Assignment without the Spirit becomes exhaustion. Duty without intimacy becomes burnout.
God did not say: “Good luck, Ezekiel.” He said, in effect: “My glory is still with you.” That is the confidence of every believer. We do not stand alone.
teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”
Illustration: Imagine being sent into battle without the commander. Fear would take over quickly. But confidence changes when the commander walks beside you. God never intended us to fulfill calling alone. His presence is our confidence.
Application: If God has called you- to lead, to preach, to parent, to witness, to stand- your confidence cannot be your personality, your talent, or your experience. It must be His Presence.
2. Sometimes Obedience Feels Heavy
2. Sometimes Obedience Feels Heavy
So the Spirit lifted me up and took me away; and I went embittered in the rage of my spirit, and the hand of the Lord was strong on me. Then I came to the exiles who lived beside the river Chebar at Tel-abib, and I sat there seven days where they were living, causing consternation among them.
I love the honesty of Scripture. Ezekiel is obedient- but he is not emotionally cheerful. He feels the burden. He feels the heaviness. He feels the cost.
Sometimes doing the right thing is heavy. Sometimes obedience breaks your heart. Sometimes truth burdens you before it blesses others. We often think if God is in it, it should feel easy. Not always.
Sometimes obedience feels like carrying weight. Sometimes ministry feels like tears. Sometimes warning people feels painful. Burden is not failure. Sometimes burden is evidence of love.
Illustration: A doctor giving a hard diagnosis does not enjoy the moment. But love requires honesty. The burden proves the care. Sometimes spiritual warning feels like that.
Application: Do not confuse emotional heaviness with spiritual weakness. Some of the holiest assignments feel the heaviest.
3. God Appoints Watchmen
3. God Appoints Watchmen
At the end of seven days the word of the Lord came to me, saying, “Son of man, I have appointed you a watchman to the house of Israel; whenever you hear a word from My mouth, warn them from Me.
In ancient cities, the watchman stood on the wall. His job was not complicated. Watch. Stay awake. Look for danger. And is danger came- sound the alarm. If he saw danger and stayed silent, people died.
The watchman does not create the danger. He announces it.
Likewise:
We do not create truth.
We declare truth
We do not invent judgement.
We warn because God has spoken.
The watchman is not responsible for whether people listen. But he is responsible for whether he warns.
The watchman is not responsible for the enemy coming- but he is responsible for sounding the alarm.
“Therefore, I testify to you this day that I am innocent of the blood of all men. “For I did not shrink from declaring to you the whole purpose of God.
Paul understood the weight of being a watchman.
4. Silence Can Become Sin
4. Silence Can Become Sin
“When I say to the wicked, ‘You will surely die,’ and you do not warn him or speak out to warn the wicked from his wicked way that he may live, that wicked man shall die in his iniquity, but his blood I will require at your hand. “Yet if you have warned the wicked and he does not turn from his wickedness or from his wicked way, he shall die in his iniquity; but you have delivered yourself.
This is where the message becomes deeply serious. God says:
If the wicked are warned and refuse to listen- their blood is on them. But if the watchman refuses to warn- their blood is required from him.
That is sobering. That should shake us.
Silence is not always peace. Sometimes silence is disobedience. Sometimes silence is selfishness wearing the mask of politeness.
We stay quiet because:
We fear rejection
We fear conflict
We fear losing approval
We fear awkward conversations
But heaven measures silence differently. God asks: Did you warn them? Did you speak? Did you obey?
Application: Who has God placed in your life?
a child
a spouse
a friend
a coworker
someone drifting from faith
someone living far from God
Have you been praying- but refusing to speak? Have you mistaken comfort for obedience?
Sometimes the greatest act of love is an uncomfortable conversation.
5. Even The Righteous Need Warning
5. Even The Righteous Need Warning
“Again, when a righteous man turns away from his righteousness and commits iniquity, and I place an obstacle before him, he will die; since you have not warned him, he shall die in his sin, and his righteous deeds which he has done shall not be remembered; but his blood I will require at your hand.
“However, if you have warned the righteous man that the righteous should not sin and he does not sin, he shall surely live because he took warning; and you have delivered yourself.”
This surprises many people. God says: Warn the righteous too. Why? Because even faithful people can drift. Even strong believers can compromise. Even mature Christians need correction.
The greatest danger is not always rebellion.
Sometimes it is slow drift. A little compromise. A little bitterness. A little pride. A little neglect. And over time, small drift becomes great distance.
God values warning because He values restoration. Correction is not rejection. Correction is mercy.
But encourage one another day after day, as long as it is still called “Today,” so that none of you will be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin.
Application: Do you only accept encouragement- or can you receive correction? Do you love people enough to warn them? Do you allow people to warn you? Healthy believers need both.
Ask Yourself:
Am I listening for God’s voice?
Am I ignoring what He told me to say?
Have I stayed silent where God told me to speak?
Have I chosen comfort over obedience?
Am I willing to be a faithful watchman?
God is still looking for watchmen. People who stay awake. People who stand on the wall. People who love enough to warn. People who fear God more then they fear people.
Today God may be calling some people to repentance. Not for open rebellion- but for silence.
For knowing truth and withholding truth.
For loving comfort more than obedience.
For fearing people more than fearing God.
Today God is calling watchmen back to the wall.
Let us pray:
Lord, forgive us for silence. Forgive us for the times we stayed quiet because we feared people more than we feared You. Forgive us for choosing comfort over obedience. Teach us to love enough to warn. Give us courage to speak truth with grace. Help us receive correction with humility. Make us faithful watchmen in our homes, our churches, and our communities. Let us not sleep through spiritual danger. Let us stand where You have called us. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
If you have never surrendered your life to Jesus- today is not just another service. This is a warning wrapped in mercy. God warns because He loves. He calls because He cares. Jesus dies for your sins, rose again, and offers forgiveness and salvation. Those who have walked away from Jesus this also is a warning. the time is short. Do not ignore His voice. Today, if He is calling, respond.
