All Things Work Together for Good
All Things
And we know that all things work together for good for those who love God, for those who are called according to his purpose,
by John Piper
And we know that all things work together for good for those who love God, for those who are called according to his purpose, because those whom he foreknew, he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, so that he should be the firstborn among many brothers. And those whom he predestined, these he also called, and those whom he called, these he also justified, and those whom he justified, these he also glorified.

Outline
Introduction/Prayer (00:00–01:48)
What Does ‘Good’ Mean? (01:48–05:30)
“We do not know what to pray for as we ought …” But there is something we do
). But there is something we do
know
And we know that all things work together for good for those who love God, for those who are called according to his purpose,
Romans 8:28 What do we know? We know that all things work together for good for those
What do we know? We know that all things work together for good for those
who love God. ()
And we know that all things work together for good for those who love God, for those who are called according to his purpose,
1. What does “good” mean? First, “good” is to be conformed to the image of God’s Son
because those whom he foreknew, he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, so that he should be the firstborn among many brothers.
Romans 8:29
We will be like him one day in sinlessness and purity.
We will be like him one day in sinlessness and purity.
2 Second, being conformed to him, we will be in a position to see and praise him, the one
who goes before us and is lifted above us. ()
3. The last good of is our final glorification.
And those whom he predestined, these he also called, and those whom he called, these he also justified, and those whom he justified, these he also glorified.
Romans 8:30
What Are the ‘All Things’? (05:30–11:03)
1. All things—positive or negative, painful or pleasurable—are by his design, and sustained
by him, and for his glory.
For from him and through him and to him are all things.
To him be glory for eternity! Amen.
2. God will work all things according to the counsel of his will, and his will is for our good.
in whom also we were chosen, having been predestined according to the purpose of the One who works all things according to the counsel of his will, that we who hoped beforehand in Christ should be for the praise of his glory,
And we know that all things work together for good for those who love God, for those who are called according to his purpose,
(, cf. )
3. Everything we need in this life will be ours, including painful things that are necessary to
bring us to glory.
What then shall we say about these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? Indeed, he who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all, how will he not also, together with him, freely give us all things? Who will bring charges against God’s elect? God is the one who justifies. Who is the one who condemns? Christ is the one who died, and more than that, who was raised, who is also at the right hand of God, who also intercedes for us.
Romans 8:3 ()
()
4. Even death is yours. Death itself will serve our ultimate, lasting death.
So then, let no one boast in people. For all things are yours, whether Paul or Apollos or Cephas or the world or life or death or things present or things to come, all things are yours, and you are Christ’s, and Christ is God’s.
1 Corinthians 3:
()
5. All our sufferings will serve our future glory.
For I consider that the sufferings of the present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory that is about to be revealed to us. For the eagerly expecting creation awaits eagerly the revelation of the sons of God. For the creation has been subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of the one who subjected it, in hope that the creation itself also will be set free from its servility to decay, into the glorious freedom of the children of God. For we know that the whole creation groans together and suffers agony together until now.
Romans 8:18-22
()
6. All of our groaning will work together for our good
Not only this, but we ourselves also, having the first fruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves while we await eagerly our adoption, the redemption of our body. For in hope we were saved, but hope that is seen is not hope, for who hopes for what he sees? But if we hope for what we do not see, we await it eagerly with patient endurance.
Romans 8:23-25
(). At least one way
this happens is that suffering produces hope
And not only this, but we also boast in our afflictions, because we know that affliction produces patient endurance, and patient endurance, proven character, and proven character, hope, and hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us.
Romans 5:
().
