What we learned from 1. Corinthians - and overview.
As I was reflecting on 1. Corinthians, and before staring another sermon series, I wanted to look back at the book and see what we have learned. It is a letter written by Paul and Sosthenes.
A letter formed by the love, the love that formed Paul. God showing his love in Jesus Christ to Paul, Paul had given his life to serve and share about Jesus, as the Christ and Lord of all because of that love. Written in love, and out of concern that the fellowship, over many practical issues, and to call them to live for the glory of God, and the good of the others in the fellowship.
Paul addresses many things in the letter:
Sanctification, salvation, redemption, resurrection, sex, power, money, roles of men and woman, spiritual gifts, love, temptation, he gives warnings about: false teaching, division, denying the resurrection, the worlds wisdom and hurtful conduct in the fellowship.
And of what Paul said was of most important: Who Jesus is and what Jesus has done. (According to the scriptures Gods plan in redemption, how the whole 3-1 saves and redeems and adopts).
The Lords supper and resurrection. And ends with and old them of blessing and curse. – And great them in love.
Slide 1. In 1. Corinthians, we are sanctified(made holy) in Jesus Christ called to be saints (holy ones) together, with all everywhere that have Jesus Christ as Lord. (Grease and Peace for God our father)
This is very important: Who are we in Christ Jesus? Made holy to live as Holy.
Slide 2. 4-8 (Importance of thanksgiving.) Paul explains that they have all the gifts they need, that Jesus is coming back, and as they wait for that Jesus will sustain them guiltless until he comes. – Jesus is the one that sustain us, a great promise to hold on to, as we live for Jesus.
Slide 3. What how is that even possible: The importance of the cross, that is foolish for people then and today. But the very power of God. God is faithful and you were called in to fellowship with his son Jesus Christ our Lord. (We are to live in the power of the cross wisdom of God and righteousness and sanctification and redemption).
Paul addresses divisions in the church, and call them to unity in Christ. And not to quarrel and divide, over who, they think is better speaker or teacher. Paul leads them to the more important, the power of the cross, the power of God for those that are saved by it. God has made salvation possible for all that understand the power of the cross, what seems foolish for the world, is the wisdom of God. 23 Christ crucified a stumbling block, for Jews and Gentiles, - 24 but to the called Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. That no one can boast before God, - In Christ the wisdom of God we can have righteousness and sanctification and redemption.
Chapter 2. And Paul was preaching Jesus Christ and him crucified, in the Spirt and with God’s power. That they and we might trust in God’s wisdom and power.
That in Christ we have received a different spirt not from the world but from God, that we might understand the things given us by God. (We can only know God by the Holy Spirt).
We are called to grow up in our faith, People have different gifts and tasks and that is good, we don’t all do the same work. But by the Spirt, we should all grow up in to Christ. Fellow workers.
Slide 3. Gods building. – the foundation is Jesus Christ.
God’s temple, where Gods spirt dwells, holy, and you are that temple.
What do you have you did not receive? (All good gifts are from God) You are someone’s fool, who’s do you want to be. Who are we following?
A call to bless, when persecuted,
4:14 Paul writes “to admonish you as beloved children” (Not to shame you). Their father in Jesus Christ, by the gospel. And calls them to imitate him. Paul also warns them too not be arrogant. God’s kingdom is on of power not just talk.
Slide 4 Chapter 5. Paul rebukes their proud tolerance for sexual immorality that even the world finds bad. And calls them to morn and remove the person from fellowship. (in hopes of repentance). Church discipline – and now Paul corrects a norther view, it is okay to be among sinners and shine a light, but we are called not to fellowship with people who bears the name of Christ and is continuing to walk and live, in sin, sexual, greedy, swindler. Purge the evil. Instead speak the truth in love so people can repent.
Chapter 6 Don’t sue one another, where is your wisdom, I say that you shame. 9. The unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God. Not, sexually immoral, idol worshipers, adulterers, not homosexual, thieves, greedy, drunkards, revilers swindlers, will not inherit the kingdom of God.
The good news:
Slide 5. KEY: 11. And such were some of you. PPT. Washed, sanctified, justified in the name of Lord Jesus Christ by the Spirt of God (3-1 in salvation, redemption, justified)
Slide 6. You are members of Christ, flee sexual immorality -don’t be one flesh with others. Instead, be joined to the Lord and be one spirt with him. Your body it the temple of the holy Spirt, you are not you own, you were bought with a price to glorify God in you body.
About marriage and sex questions. Chapter 7. (If you have a gift of not marring and not sex it is okay to embrace). For most because of sexual immorality, to marriage one mand one woman and unpack the gift sex is for the marriage is a good. Sex is a good gift from God. It is not a barging tool, to make the other part submit, it is a right and duty to serve one’s spouse sexually to the glory of God. (whatever you do, do it to the glory of God).
Paul continues that in marriage we hold authority of spouse body.
What is God’s indentation for sex – Eph 5 - (comfort Issac) Physical touch and connection, spiritual connection, becoming one flesh, naked and not ashamed. And very advanced form of communication and vulnerability, to serve and not hurt, literal naked in all forms. To create more that a physical bond, a spiritual one, to attach two be one.
Showing Christ and the Church in a mystery. That is the great popups of marriage.
Today people might say well it is sex it not a big deal – well that is not true.
Negative forms that lead to: When sex is a weapon, rape, abuse,
Shame, pain, guilt, regret, abortion, illnesses, real issues. That are caused by misusing and abusing what God has given as a good gift, to give glory to God.
I think Paul will say, and does it in the letter, many of you comes from deep sexual immorally – the same with us we are all broken sexually because of sin, but in Christ you are cleansed, they way God in Jesus Christ looks at you, it as he looks as his son Jesus. his works, his death, his resurrection.
If you have questions and this is also for the kids – feel free to ask (don’t google) ask – adults’ mother and father. The is for all of us. If your fighting sexual sin as a single, have people encourage you, and pray for you.
Are you struggling in your marriage – and with sex – don’t google, ask trusted friends to for advice, help and prayer and accountability. Like communication it might be easy, you might have to work at it, as your grow and change as your spouse does. (Acceptance and rejection) our view of how God sees us and sex and sexuality will have a big impact on our life and also sex.
Slide 7 Chapter 7: 17-24 Live the life that the Lord Jesu assigned to him, (not others life your life). 23 you were bought with a price. To marry or not to marry, it that what Jesus has for you? (Earthly concerns).
Anyone loves God he is known by God. There is only one God idols are not real.
Slide 8 chapter 8 9-13Do not lead people in to sin because you are full of knowledge, no encourage the weaker brother and abstain from things that can make someone stubble. (Meat offered to idols) Choosing to be a slave for Christ, and serving others.
The princbles of providing for the people serving in the fellowship – that Paul has denied to take.
Paul all things to all people that some might be won.
Slide 9 25-26 Run the race with discipline - body under control. Not to be disqualified.
Chapter 10 The rock in the wilderness was Christ.
Don’t put Christ to the test. (Christ is God)
Slide 10 10:13 No temptation is common – and God will provide a way of escape, that you may endure it.
Do all things for the glory of God. (All is Gods)
Slide 11 11:3 Roles and responsibilities off men and woman, - The head of man is Christ, the head of a wife is husband, and that God is Christ head. Function and roles modeled by God in 3-1. God, Christ head, Jesus sends the Holy spirt. – All one, in value worth glory and still have different functions, and submit their role to the glory of them all.
The same in the family and Church. Christ, husband (serves as Christ serve the church) woman, children.
Church Christ, qualified leaders (male), other people in the church.
Don’t mess with the “rules” /men and woman to behavior look like the other, to disgrace what God has created.
Slide 12 11:20. And slide 13:33-34 (Wait for one another eat at home). Rebuke of not caring for one another, (this saddens me) when we don’t look out for one another, when there is no food for the ones serving in the kitchen, kids church or tech or people in the bathroom, - also lets take a look and see who is there and if they are not there at dinner let’s try to find them, before we keep eating. In other words, do we have eyes for the whole fellowship or are we blinded by my, myself and my family? If we are how can we lift our eyes to see? (Jesus Christ, suffered and died, - how do I serve in the fellowship).
The Lords supper – a physical reminder of Jesus life, death, for our sin, and that he is coming back a time to examined our relationship to God and the fellowship.
Spiritual gifts: Everyone in Christ has a spiritual gift, it is given for the common good, to build up the church, gifts should not divide but encourage and build up. There are many different gifts and they are given by the Holy Spirt as he pleases. (one Spirt, one Lord) One body many members. All need one another to function as a body also the ones that are difficult to understand. The body of Christ. Not all are the same.
Slide 13 Chapter 13: 4-8. All should be done in love. 13. Love is:
Orderly worship. Not confusion, speak one at a time. No woman pastors, follow function and rule.
Slide 14 What is the basis for all of Paul’s letter, the gospel – 15:1-11. According to the scripture, Jesus died and rose again, (Jesus died for sins, and rose again).
Slide 15: 15 20-22 Jesus’ resurrection defended. All die in Adam all are raised in Christ. – Death of death. Resurrection body.
Slide 16 Warning about false teaching on the resurrection. 15:33-34
Slide 17 Death will be no more. 15: 54-58 – important.
Giving to the poor – honor the workers and don’t despise Tim.
