Sermon Title: Rebuilding Whats Broken “If Not Now, Then When?” Text: Nehemiah 3:1–32 Theme: God’s work requires present commitment, shared responsibility, and urgent action.
Thesis Statement:
When God calls His people to rebuild, delay is disobedience—if not now, then when?

Introduction:

Picture this the walls of God’s city have crumbled under enemy assaults and years of neglect. Nehemiah fresh from prayer and the king commission, he rallies people. Can you hear him say come let’s build!! And they do. Not tomorrow, Not next week. But right Now. Priest lay down their robes to mortar stone. Rulers shoulder beam. Even half the family of one group works while the other holds back- but most say yes without delay. Don’t miss it look good it’s a master class in timely obedience, where proximity to the brokenness fuels action. Their homes were exposed their families vulnerable, their God call, If not now then when.
Can I tell you that the same call faces us today our walls are broken cracked families compromised churches a generation that see no reason for God or church. And we sit and scroll past the need thinking someone else should do it or we will do it later.
Nehemiah 3 is right here to remind us that we all have a part the question is what section will you take will you work alone or will you bring your family but the work must be done.

I. The Prompting to Begin (Sacred Initiative)

“Then Eliashib the high priest rose up with his brethren…” (Nehemiah 3:1)
Can I tell you this morning before a single stone is lifted , there was readiness Nehemiah 3 is not just a list it’s a ledger of a city shamed for 141 years, wall crumbled since Nebuchadnezzar torched the place in 586 B.C. Jerusalem
Nehemiah 3 opens not with hesitation, but with holy movement. The high priest didn’t wait for perfect conditions—he rose up.
A. The work started with those who had influence.
· Church, don’t miss this— The wall started going up when the leaders got up!
· When the priest moved… The people moved!
· When influence acted… The work advanced!
· And that raises a question for all of us:
· 👉 If God has given you influence— In your home… In your church… On your job…
· Why are you waiting?
· Because when those with influence delay… Everybody delays…
· But when those with influence step up… Everything starts to shift!

B. They didn’t debate the assignment—they decided on obedience.
Church, look again at Nehemiah 3
The text never says they formed a committee… It never says they held a conference… It never says they voted on the vision…
The Bible says—they rose up and built!
That means they didn’t sit around asking:
“Do we have enough resources?”
“Is this the right time?”
“What if it doesn’t work?”
No—they decided to obey!
Some of us are stuck because we keep debating what God already declared!
God said go—and you’re still gathering opinions… God said serve—and you’re still seeking confirmation… God said build—and you’re still battling hesitation…
Tell somebody delayed obedience is still disobedience!
C. The first step in rebuilding is always spiritual urgency.
Church, hear this clearly— Before there was a brick laid… Before there was a gate hung… Before there was a wall raised…
· There had to be a stirring on the inside!
· Because you can’t fix anything on the outside Until God moves something on the inside!
·
· Push
· Rebuilding doesn’t start with tools— It starts with trouble in your spirit!
· It starts when you can’t sleep like you used to… When you can’t ignore what you see… When something down in your soul says, “This cannot stay like this!”
· That’s spiritual urgency!
·
· Challenge
· The problem is not that we don’t see the brokenness— The problem is we’ve gotten comfortable with it!
· Walls torn down… and we adjusted… Gates burned… and we accepted… Lives broken… and we normalized it…
· But when urgency shows up— Comfort has to leave!
·
· Drive
· You’ll never rebuild what you’re not burdened about. You’ll never fix what you’re not moved by. You’ll never change what you’re willing to tolerate!
Application: Too many blessings are delayed because we keep postponing obedience. God is not asking for later—He’s asking for now.
👉If God put it on your heart, why are you still waiting?

II. The Participation of the Body (Shared Involvement)

Throughout the chapter, we see a pattern: “Next unto him… next unto them… after him…”
This is a picture of unity in action.
A. Priests, goldsmiths, merchants, and families all worked together.
· Church, don’t miss this picture in Nehemiah 3
· This wasn’t just construction— This was cooperation!
· You had priests—used to praying… Now they’re building!
· You had goldsmiths—used to fine detail… Now they’re handling rough stones!
· You had merchants—used to selling… Now they’re serving!
· And families—mothers, fathers, daughters— All getting their hands dirty for the same purpose!
·
· Push It Further
· This shows us something powerful:
· God didn’t wait for perfect people— He used available people!
· They didn’t all have the same background… They didn’t all have the same skillset… They didn’t all have the same title…
· But they had the same commitment!
·
· Challenge the Church
· And that’s the problem today— We’ve got too many spectators and not enough servants!
· Folks saying, “That’s not my department…” “That’s not my calling…” “That’s not what I do…”
· But when the wall is broken— Everybody has a responsibility!
·
· Drive It Home
· They didn’t let their profession limit their participation!
· The priest didn’t say, “I only preach…” The merchant didn’t say, “I only sell…” The goldsmith didn’t say, “This ain’t my field…”
· No—they all said, “Where can I help?”
B. Everyone had a section—no one did everything, but everyone did something.
Church, look at the wisdom of God in Nehemiah 3
· God didn’t assign one person to build the whole wall— He gave everybody a section!
· Because if one person tries to do everything— They’ll burn out…
· But when everybody does something— The work gets built up!
·
· Push
· Notice the balance:
· Nobody did everything… So there was no room for pride…
· But everybody did something… So there was no excuse for passivity!
· God didn’t overload one— And He didn’t overlook another!
· Everybody had a place… Everybody had a part… Everybody had a purpose!
·
· Challenge
· And that’s where we struggle today—
· Some folks trying to do it all… tired, frustrated, overwhelmed… While others sitting back… doing nothing, saying “somebody else got it…”
· But God never designed His church like that!
· 👉 The burden is too heavy for one… 👉But it’s too important for none!
·
· Drive
· You may not be called to preach— But you’re called to serve!
· You may not lead the whole ministry— But you can lift a piece of it!
· You may not build the entire wall— But there’s a section with your name on it!
· And here’s the truth:
· If you don’t build your section… There will be a gap in the wall!
C. Even daughters are mentioned (v.12), showing inclusive commitment.
Hold Up Hold Up  don’t rush past that line in Nehemiah 3:12
The Bible says Shallum… and his daughters helped rebuild.
That means this wasn’t just a man’s movement— This was a kingdom movement!
Push It Further
In a culture where women were often overlooked in public labor, God made sure their contribution was recorded.
Why?
Because when God is building something— He doesn’t limit participation by status, gender, or tradition…
He looks for willing hearts!
Challenge the Church
Somebody told you, “Stay in your place…” But God is saying, “Step into your purpose!”
Somebody said, “That’s not your role…” But God is saying, “I called you too!”
Because when the wall is broken— every hand is needed!
Drive It Home
Those daughters didn’t say:
“This isn’t for us…”
“Let the men handle it…”
“We’ll just watch…”
No! They picked up tools and joined the work!
And God honored them by putting their participation in His Word!
Truth:God celebrates those who step up—no matter who they are!
Key Truth: God’s work is not built by spectators but by servants.
Application: The church struggles when people admire the mission but avoid the labor.
👉If not you, then who? If not now, then when?

III. The Persistence Despite Resistance (Steadfast Determination)

Even in this chapter, we see a subtle note:
The nobles of Tekoa “put not their necks to the work” (v.5)
Not everyone will participate. Some will resist. Some will refuse.
A. But the builders didn’t stop because others stood still.

1. Progress Is Not Dependent on Participation

Not everyone will answer the call. Some will have position but no productivity. But God’s work does not wait on reluctant people—it moves through responsive people.
👉 Just because they won’t move doesn’t mean you should stop.

2. Faithfulness Must Override Frustration

It’s easy to get discouraged when others won’t help. But the builders refused to let disappointment derail their assignment.
They kept building next to:
Indifference
Excuses
Resistance
👉 You can’t let someone else’s stillness stall your obedience.

3. Obedience Is Personal, Not Conditional

God didn’t give you your assignment based on what others would do.
He didn’t say: “Build… if they help.” “Serve… if they show up.”
He said build anyway.
👉 Your responsibility is not their response—it’s your obedience.
B. They kept building next to discouragement.
Listen Listen
The text keeps saying, “Next unto him… next unto them…”
That means while one was working— another was right beside them…
But here’s the reality: Not everybody beside you is building— some are discouraging!
And yet… they kept building anyway!

Push

They built next to people who:
Didn’t believe in the vision
Didn’t support the mission
Didn’t put their hands to the work
And instead of stopping… They stayed focused on their assignment!
Because they understood something powerful:
👉 You can’t control who stands next to you— But you can control what you do next to them!

Challenge

Some of us have stopped building Because of who’s standing beside us…
“They don’t support me…” “They don’t encourage me…” “They don’t show up…”
But God never told you to build based on their attitude— He told you to build based on His instruction!

Drive

Discouragement may be near you— But it doesn’t have to be in you!
Negativity may surround you— But it doesn’t have to stop you!
They kept laying bricks… While others kept throwing shade…
They kept working… While others kept watching…
C. Progress doesn’t require everyone’s approval—just your obedience.
Church, hear this clearly in Nehemiah3
The wall went up—not because everybody agreed— But because somebody obeyed!

Push It Further

If Nehemiah had waited for unanimous approval… The walls would still be down!
Because there will always be:
Critics who question
Skeptics who doubt
Bystanders who watch
But God never told you to get their approval— He told you to follow His instruction!

Challenge the Church

Some of you are stuck waiting on:
People to clap for you
Friends to confirm you
Family to approve you
But obedience is not a group decision— It’s a personal response to a divine command!
👉 God didn’t ask them… He asked you!

Drive It Home

You don’t need a crowd to move forward— You just need a command from God!
You don’t need everybody to agree— You just need to align with His will!
Because when you obey God:
Doors will open
Provision will come
Progress will happen
Even if nobody else understands it!
Application: Don’t let the unwilling stop the work God called you to do.
👉Excuses don’t build walls—effort does.
Closing
Church… the wall won’t rise tomorrow… If you won’t lift a brick today!
God didn’t call us to sit—He called us to serve! He didn’t call us to delay—He called us to do it now!
You keep saying “one day”… But God is asking, WHY NOT THIS DAY?
If not now… WHEN will you pray? WHEN will you serve? WHEN will you step up and stand out?
Because every moment you wait… Is a moment the wall stays broken!
So I came to tell somebody— This is your moment! This is your hour! This is your NOW!
If not now… THEN WHEN?! 🙌
