Covenants are the ‘bones’ of scripture. They gives us stability in our doctrines

Would God have been perfectly just to never interact with man or bless him?

God voluntarily interacts with humanity through covenants:

Isaiah 24:5–6 “The earth is also defiled under its inhabitants, Because they have transgressed the laws, Changed the ordinance, Broken the everlasting covenant. Therefore the curse has devoured the earth, And those who dwell in it are desolate. Therefore the inhabitants of the earth are burned, And few men are left.”  

Hosea 6:7 ““But like men they transgressed the covenant; There they dealt treacherously with Me.”

Cov of Grace: Jeremiah 31:31 ““Behold, the days are coming, says the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah—”

Cov of Grace is unconditional: Ezekiel 36:24–28 “For I will take you from among the nations, gather you out of all countries, and bring you into your own land. Then I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you shall be clean; I will cleanse you from all your filthiness and from all your idols. I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; I will take the heart of stone out of your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. I will put My Spirit within you and cause you to walk in My statutes, and you will keep My judgments and do them. Then you shall dwell in the land that I gave to your fathers; you shall be My people, and I will be your God.”

Cov of redemption: Luke 

Purpose: to accomplish the redemption of the elect. 

Intra trinitarian covenant.  

‘Pact of salvation’ 

Important: because our Cov of Grace is only as strong as the Cov of redemption. 

Samuel Willard: pursuit.  

Mainly involves father and son, but includes spirit. 

Timing, 

Psalm 90:3 “You turn man to destruction, And say, “Return, O children of men.””

Ephesians 1:4 “just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before Him in love,”

Revelation 13:8 “All who dwell on the earth will worship him, whose names have not been written in the Book of Life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.”

Luke 22:29 “And I bestow upon you a kingdom, just as My Father bestowed one upon Me,” I bestow upon you a kingdom. Just as my father bestowed upon me.

Jeremiah 31:33 “But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the Lord: I will put My law in their minds, and write it on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people.”

Zechariah 6:12–13 “Then speak to him, saying, ‘Thus says the Lord of hosts, saying: “Behold, the Man whose name is the BRANCH! From His place He shall branch out, And He shall build the temple of the Lord; Yes, He shall build the temple of the Lord. He shall bear the glory, And shall sit and rule on His throne; So He shall be a priest on His throne, And the counsel of peace shall be between them both.” ’”

Isaiah 42:1–7 ““Behold! My Servant whom I uphold, My Elect One in whom My soul delights! I have put My Spirit upon Him; He will bring forth justice to the Gentiles. He will not cry out, nor raise His voice, Nor cause His voice to be heard in the street. A bruised reed He will not break, And smoking flax He will not quench; He will bring forth justice for truth. Ephesians 3:11 “according to the eternal purpose which He accomplished in Christ Jesus our Lord,”

Stipulations

John 12:49–50 “For I have not spoken on My own authority; but the Father who sent Me gave Me a command, what I should say and what I should speak. And I know that His command is everlasting life. Therefore, whatever I speak, just as the Father has told Me, so I speak.””

1 Peter 1:18–20 “knowing that you were not redeemed with corruptible things, like silver or gold, from your aimless conduct received by tradition from your fathers, but with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot. He indeed was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you”

John 6:37–41 “All that the Father gives Me will come to Me, and the one who comes to Me I will by no means cast out. For I have come down from heaven, not to do My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me. This is the will of the Father who sent Me, that of all He has given Me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up at the last day. vs 40 is so secure, because the covenant between him and the father.

‘not my will, but thine be done.’

John 3:5–7 “Jesus answered, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Do not marvel that I said to you, ‘You must be born again.’”

1 Thessalonians 1:5 “For our gospel did not come to you in word only, but also in power, and in the Holy Spirit and in much assurance, as you know what kind of men we were among you for your sake.”

Reward:

John 6:37 “All that the Father gives Me will come to Me, and the one who comes to Me I will by no means cast out.”

Isaiah 53:10–12 “Yet it pleased the Lord to bruise Him; He has put Him to grief. When You make His soul an offering for sin, He shall see His seed, He shall prolong His days, And the pleasure of the Lord shall prosper in His hand. He shall see the labor of His soul, and be satisfied. By His knowledge My righteous Servant shall justify many, For He shall bear their iniquities. Philippians 2:9–11 “Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”

How to you know that this covenant is completed: The resurrection

Romans 4:25 “who was delivered up because of our offenses, and was raised because of our justification.”

The conditinal covenant of redemption, secures the unconditional covenant of Grace.

For the covenant of grace to break, the trinity would have to break. Nothing more sure. this is your confidence and comfort

Show me the seed of the blood of Jesus in the abrahamic covenant.

2 Samuel 7:12–16 ““When your days are fulfilled and you rest with your fathers, I will set up your seed after you, who will come from your body, and I will establish his kingdom. He shall build a house for My name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever. I will be his Father, and he shall be My son. If he commits iniquity, I will chasten him with the rod of men and with the blows of the sons of men. But My mercy shall not depart from him, as I took it from Saul, whom I removed from before you. And your house and your kingdom shall be established forever before you. Your throne shall be established forever.” ’ ””

Blood = cov

Hebrews 13:20 “Now may the God of peace who brought up our Lord Jesus from the dead, that great Shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the everlasting covenant,”

Luke 22:20 “Likewise He also took the cup after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood, which is shed for you.”

Substance of Cov of Grace: is atonement provided?

> Only in the new.

> All was promised, but the substance is only in the new.

Romans 3:25–26 “whom God set forth as a propitiation by His blood, through faith, to demonstrate His righteousness, because in His forbearance God had passed over the sins that were previously committed, to demonstrate at the present time His righteousness, that He might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus.”

NO covenant Except one is uncondiditonal:

He who is eight days old among you shall be circumcised, every male child in your generations, he who is born in your house or bought with money from any foreigner who is not your descendant. He who is born in your house and he who is bought with your money must be circumcised, and My covenant shall be in your flesh for an everlasting covenant. And the uncircumcised male child, who is not circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin, that person shall be cut off from his people; he has broken My covenant.”
